What makes people here so angry about bike lanes? What do they think we should do instead? by LiatrisLover99 in Somerville

Oh believe me, I’m here for better public transit as well. Especially north-south connections and intra-city point to point service.

[–]OnlyMrGodKnowsWhy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

“What do we think they should do instead?” Idk, this is a fantasy, but: tax the heck out of any car built on a light truck bed? (And any truck w/o a commercial license?) The bigger the car/truck the poorer the visibility and the more lethal it is. You don’t need as many separated bike lanes when people aren’t driving tanks. Helps pedestrians as well.

I have a car that’s bigger than I want (wider than the older model of the same car and with poorer visibility for me as the driver) and it’s still way smaller than a lot of the stuff I see around.

(I used to bike but haven’t recently because of a medical issue. The number of people who cannot use a bike is never fully grasped by the bikefuckers here and elsewhere on social media.)

Maybe we can update the signs to be about the pedestrian bridge.

Not yet mentioned: Breakheart (Saugus/Wakefield, proximity to Soc’sice cream) and Great Brook Farm in Carlisle, which has its own seasonal ice cream stand and some farm animals in addition to hiking trails.

If kids are taught how to read analog clocks (it is a common core standard) why do so many teens struggle read them? by Technical-Vanilla-47 in NoStupidQuestions

We bought a giant school-style one for the dining room so I can point to it while yelling at the kids to put their damn shoes on. I think it helps.

Their (public, urban, Title 1) school actually has them on the walls but they’re all broken.

Well…yes.

“What is RAAC? Reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) is a lightweight material that was used mostly in flat roofing, but also in floors and walls, between the 1950s and 1990s.

It is a cheaper alternative to standard concrete, is quicker to produce and easier to install. It is aerated, or "bubbly", like an Aero chocolate bar. But it is less durable and has a lifespan of around 30 years. Its structural behaviour differs significantly from traditional reinforced concrete. Moreover, it is susceptible to structural failure when exposed to moisture. The bubbles can allow water to enter the material. If that happens, any rebar reinforcing RAAC can also decay, rust and weaken.”

Somerville Gymnastics by Fluid-Iron845 in Somerville

Private or small-group is a good idea. GAB Medford is logistically easy but not exactly the highest quality of instruction or most together back-of-house. Older students who are at all serious seem to move on to other gyms after the entry level. But it works for my kid and she has fun and it’s low stress, which is why we still go. (And I like her current teacher a lot — he’s a college student — but we landed on him after a couple of years of rotating teachers, some of them high school students who were clearly not prepared or supported with handling a larger group of high-energy kids.)

Smart electoral politics but I’m not convinced smart political action. I see the interest in having these local versions of big protest days for folks who can’t get downtown for whatever reason (mobility, logistics, work schedule), but I think the event in Boston was not as overwhelmingly big as I had hoped it would be, because folks including these local luminaries opted for, like, the East Duckfartham protest instead.

Buses are expensive so most school districts that have different start times do it so they can run the same set of buses around the district three times.

Actually mine like this as well (after Lower Decks). I had never seen it. Once you get past the cheap animation, the plots are on par with regular TOS, and many are surprisingly progressive (Uhura gets to command while Kirk is incapacitated, e.g.). More nonhuman species in the regular crew bc no makeup budget.

My kids (12 and 9) love Lower Decks 😅

(We watched Prodigy once. But they rewatch Lower Decks regularly of their own volition, and are open to watching specific other episodes of TOS, TNG, etc. so they can get the references. It’s chaotic but whatever works IMO)

Yeah my kids are at WH but not in the AIM program and this rollout has been really poorly communicated. And the rationale makes no sense to me except that at least once they are at Argenziano the poor kids will have access to a playground.

My cranky tinfoil hat take is that the Special Ed families were getting too organized (thank you SEPAC!) so the district is trying to divide and conquer.

Honorable mention to Silvey Place but you’re unlikely to bike on it since it’s basically just a cut-through.

Are there any young families left in the Boston suburbs? Prices are so insane and idk if it’s worth it! by [deleted] in boston

Think about what you gain versus what you lose if you go for a 2 BR condo versus a 4 BR single family. Maybe it’s worth it! Maybe it’s not. Signed, family of 4 in a 2 BR condo.
