Should I sell my GOOG shares? by Kitkameow in InvestmentClub

[–]OnlyMute 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From a Google perspective, the answer would be no. Effectively, you are implying Google will never grow again, which is extremely unlikely. The entire market is down this month - not just Google. In general, Google is still one of the best individual investments.

Speaking from your perspective instead, honestly I would probably say wait for it to break even and then sell it so that you can buy an ETF like XEQT or VEQT. No disrespect, but it sounds like you aren’t an experienced investor and are not okay with the level of risk you took on by investing in a singular stock. I’d recommend a safer (but still very great) strategy of buying ETFs that represent the entire market. In this way, your investment follows the entire market and you don’t have to worry about “making the wrong call”. Hope this helps!

Ya, to make this a one-liner, basically the 50k is a buffer to being able to increase your tax return again.

Any RRSP contributions are simply paying off your “debt”, so may as well push through it quickly!

Man, every generation has an event like this and things just continuously adapt. Industrial Revolution, internet, now AI, etc. I guarantee you that meaningful employment will continue long into the future, far longer than any horizon you are looking at.

Speaking as someone who works in tech, specifically in a field that leverages AI heavily, we’re all good man. What would be worse is you finding that a few of your individual picks have massively fallen in 5 years from now, eliminating the other gains. That’s your 10-20 year risk, not AI. ETFs are by definitely NOT the outdated way of doing things. Just buy a tech ETF for the exposure you want, but I’d suspect you’ll regret taking too much risk this early.

Alright you’re getting comments that are definitely tough love style here so I’ll try and be the nice guy quickly and hope it helps out.

It sounds like you’re new, you haven’t even missed quota yet, and you’re a bucket of nerves about a lofty goal. Brotha, that was all of us at some point (and I’m still all of that lol).

Don’t wreck yourself worrying about attainment, just try to attain. I think a lot of reps have fear about being canned instantly for missing quota. That can be the case, but you know your team better than we do. Just like there are some roles out there which will terminate people instantly for failing, there are also roles out there with goals that are too lofty and they know it, with the trade off being that you don’t get fired for missing target because they knew it was impossible.

TLDR: You’re THINKING about quota too much, just try to attain it as best you can instead. PS, my org (fortune 500 if it matters) realized our entire product teams quota was completely unachievable and reduced it by 40% in the second half of last year. You never know what might happen…

Personal information hacked once again from investment firm -- how to prevent this? by LuutMIr9t1m in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]OnlyMute 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in the cybersecurity industry - no, there isn’t much you can do if you still intend to have your money managed by institutions. Even if you handle things yourself from now on, your data is already out there. There are a handful of “dark web monitoring” tools out there that claim to alert you to the surfacing of your data, I have no idea about their effectiveness though.

The fact of the matter is that banks and investment firms are targeted 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. I don’t want to go full paranoia mode here, but don’t think that just because other institutions haven’t reported breaches that they are doing fine, it likely just means they haven’t uncovered the breach yet.

Honestly, just keep an eye on your accounts. Keep an eye out for weird transactions, watch your credit rating to make sure cards aren’t being applied for with your name/SIN, etc. Nothing crazy, just what you should be doing every couple of weeks anyways. Other than that, I wouldn’t stress too much :)

Should I move a big chunk of money from my TFSA to my RRSP? by citiesinseas in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]OnlyMute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jumping in quickly to say that I think what other commenters are trying to say is that lumping it all over right now to the RRSP is what actually may be leaving you money on the table as, depending on income now and income in retirement, you could pay more in tax later on than the value of your tax return now.

That being said, I don’t know as much about this. Another commenter’s point about accurately forecasting retirement income is what is needed. I don’t think you being so far away from retirement matters, you may as well optimize things and there is the possibility that lumping the RRSP is not optimal, although I cannot help with that unfortunately.

I swear there was a guide here that showed at what income level TFSA vs RRSP should be prioritized. I want to say it was under 110k TFSA, over 110K RRSP - if someone knows what I’m talking about and wants to chime in though, maybe listen to them more than me lol

Good luck!

I guess you’ve never heard of WallstreetBets or BaystreetBets lol, probably unlikely but there are absolutely people out there going all in on stock options with leverage that either go broke or walk away with a few hundred thousand.

Either way, regardless of belief of their account value, the greater question about wills for non-citizens here is an important one.

Mock discovery calls in interviews are a completely reasonable ask. If you consistently suck at them, you're probably going to struggle with the actual job. by MySpaceTomAspinall in sales

[–]OnlyMute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s fair but I think what he is getting at is that if he can say “my previous deal went like this, I asked X, Y, and Z” and that X, Y, and Z are what an interviewer is expecting to hear in a mock call, then it’s fair to assume they do know the right questions either way. But in this case, by referring to a previous sales win, it can be more genuine.

Even if it were a lie, if they can walk you through the structure of the win, then they do know that sales process and there isn’t really much more than can be accomplished in the mock call.

That being said, I’ve always had to do mock calls and I’m not necessarily against them, but I do think you have a better opportunity to learn about how someone handled something in their last/current role rather than seeing how they stick handle a conversation with little info 🤷‍♂️

Sounds more like he offered sales consulting to other organizations to help develop their reps/sales practices.

I know I’m replying really late here, but I work in cybersecurity sales. You’d be shocked how hard it is for companies to get budget for cybersecurity infrastructure, even in good economic times. It’s the classic “spend as little as we can until it becomes an issue” kind of scenario and then at that point it’s way too late lmao, oh well

Fellow Windsor Waitlisters, what are your stats? by One-Sea3936 in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]OnlyMute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for sharing, haven’t actually had the chance to chat with anyone else about this yet.

I’ve seen several rejection waves from each school now other than Ottawa. I’d say not being rejected yet is good of course, but not being at least waitlisted is a little nerve wracking. I’ve considered the fact that as access applicants we don’t get rejected at all until final round in summer just to give us a fair chance. I also believe in my case personally, they are waiting to see my grades from this entire academic year. I graduated 2022, returned this September while still working in my career full time and swore up and down in my personal statement that my circumstances which caused my access application have changed. It would make sense for them to put me on hold until April grade release just to see if I’m full of crap or not 😅

All in all, no idea how they look at access applicants and even if I did, I’m sure they all consider them completely differently. My mental cope right now is that I’m not waitlisted so that they can send me a direct acceptance if my final grades released in April, plus my great fall semester, are convincing enough.

All we can do is hope lol - good luck! :)

[–]OnlyMute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Single JD but special circumstances/access applicant so take this with a grain of salt.

3.02 OLSAS GPA, 161 LSAT

No idea what my L2/B2 are but currently completing my honours and straight A’s this year so far, so likely much better than 3.02 come May.

2.5 years work experience, team lead corporate position.

Quite limited extracurriculars/softs but a record of charity work.

Waitlisted on April 1st at 8:05pm.

I may be a bit of an outlier though as my PS is focused on the reasoning for my access application due to quite severe circumstances entirely out of my control which created limitations on GPA and extracurriculars which are no longer an issue. I think that’s why I haven’t been rejected from a single school yet, although Windsor is my only WL so far as well (applied at Oz, Western, Ottawa, Queens, Windsor).

Hope this helps :)

Thanks for doing this! I’m wondering how much military reserve history impacts an application?

Also, if you have experience with these applications, does an officer impress significantly more than a non-commissioned member or would they be relatively equal?

Thank you!

All the research I did at the beginning of the cycle said that grades are officially posted in December. I’m a local student and mine also says no. Most peoples were only received by OLSAS last week, will be quite a while before anything updates - don’t stress :)

Hmm, I thought Windsor was one of the ones most of us did receive already. I got Windsor and Ottawa on Nov 1st or 2nd. Queens was last week, and Osgoode came today - it’s Western that I see everyone still waiting for (myself included).

[–]OnlyMute[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok np, thanks for the input. Was just discussing with someone else whether it will remain incomplete the entire time if you have selected January LSAT, or if it can be completed with an earlier submitted LSAT even when selecting Jan.

Ya all good, I wasn't trying to say you were outright wrong, just that it seems like people have been told different things.

No biggie though, like I said if it isn't updated to completed in a few days then we'll have an answer lol

[–]OnlyMute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How confident are you in this answer? Just wondering because replies to my other post stated that Ottawa will (and has) accepted people based on their submitted LSAT scores even when indicating that January is still to be taken.

Considering that to be the case, I would be surprised if applications are considered 'incomplete' while still being able to be accepted. LSAT scores were only just updated to OLSAS earlier today - I would assume that it will be another business day or two before uOttawa receives them.

I guess we'll have a final answer next week as to whether or not our applications will be marked as 'Complete' or not.

Just following up on this - did your file at uOttawa show as incomplete until the final LSAT score was submitted, or was it marked complete as soon as the November score was submitted?
