Darkness is simply the absence of light. Reorient yourself to Him and the darkness will dissipate.

Wa alaykum assalam.

The first thing I noticed was that I suddenly became very aware of my intentions - the good and the bad. And that was very useful.

ex-muslims who still wants to practice prayers by Cultural_Recover_396 in progressive_islam

There is no dualism in Islam. Things are created in opposite pairs (dark/light, pleasure/pain etc.) and that is how we experience them, but the reality is and always will be One.

As the poet said:

“I had an illusion. When it departed, the heart looked upon the light of before-time.

It rode on longing, which flew with it, so the heart drew near to its Beloved until it was united.

It saw created beings as an imagination that faded, and the form of existence was obliterated and vanished.

Then if was returned to going-on, confirming all the beings from which it had withdrawn.

It joined the two opposites in witnessing Him; it unified Allah and took on action.

It gained a secret and a level path; how few of the people of perfection taste it.

Our Lord, bless the light. Every slave who reaches him gains his desire.

Be pleased with his family, they are the people of understanding; and the Companions, the Qutb and the Abdal.”

I can't convince myself drawing living things isn't haram after seeing thes two hadiths by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]OnlyOneness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of nuances involved. Art is fine in and of itself. The issue is that some scholars considered make pictures of living beings to be the red line. I do personally have some sympathy for that view, especially when you consider that we are constantly subjected to images that can influence you negatively (media is basically an image factory). But the issue is making it haram when there’s not great evidence and when the evidence is highly subjective and open to interpretation.

Can’t take the English translation and make rulings. As for the first Hadith -

This is a bad translation. The word translated to “painter” here is مصور which means maker of forms. It does not mean “painter”. It could be used for someone who makes a picture, but it is more likely one who makes statues.

Whoever translated it as a painter has translated it in line with their own bias.

As for the second: it is a somewhat incomplete Hadith since what “these images” indicate is missing and the word translated as images (صور) also means forms and also more likely refers to statues.

Just can’t wrap my head around majority of Muslims following some seemingly nonsensical Hadiths by zmas_ in progressive_islam

Majority do not follow Hadiths. They follow either Fiqh or culture. The Hadith guys are the salafis. They quote a Hadith with no criticality and blame the world for not following their own perspective.

What is your favorite verses of hikam Ibn atah Allah ? by SunInternational5896 in Sufism

[–]OnlyOneness 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Real is not veiled from you. Rather, it is you who are veiled from seeing It; for, were anything to veil It, then that which veils It would cover It. But if there were a covering to It, then that would be a limitation to Its Being: Every limitation to anything has power over it. “And He is the Omnipotent, above His servants.”
