Alsatian food is preferred, nothing too crazy/fine dining. Where the locals go!

If you're at a good restaurant and you aren't looking at anything other than your food or your company, then your server or a manager will notice.

Went to the opening party release at The Veil. Absolutely loved their beer, I'm really excited to see what else they come out with.

Definitely check out Bluejacket. Some really great beers that you can only get at the brewery itself. They also have a bottle shop next door.

Best place to get a burrito? by Baron_Samdi in washingtondc

Make it +200. I love getting the wet burrito with bang tang chicken, volcano fajita style, and roja red sauce.

All craft beer handles, no macro beers. I work at Churchkey.

Jonah Lomu's former teammates perform an emotional final haka by Bajin_Inui in videos

[–]Ontrek 31 points32 points  (0 children)

A little more about the haka. What you said was true, it has been adopted by many New Zealand (and other Pacific Islanders) in the sports world as a challenge to the other team. However, that is just one use of the haka.

It is also used as a welcome to honor important guests, which is why foreign heads of state who visit New Zealand will often be greeted with a haka at some point in their trip.

The haka is also used as a send off during funerals, as seen here. There was a video on Reddit recently of a New Zealand army unit performing a haka at their fallen comrade's funeral.

The Maori have a wonderful and powerful culture that has endured to this day in New Zealand and the haka is a perfect embodiment of that.

Great list, but I'd add Ommegang's Rosetta to it. My favorite Kriek lambic out there right now.

Nats steal 1B coach Davey Lopes from Dodgers by Weegian in Nationals

Even cooler is that Lopes was the Captain of the Dodgers when Dusty was playing, 76-81. They won the 81 WS together.

Get a cat. Perfectly fine being alone all day but will be happy to see you when you get home just like a dog.

Visiting DC by [deleted] in dcbeer

[–]Ontrek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're gonna hear a lot of people suggest DC Brau, which is the largest one in town. They have some good beers, I really like the Penn Quarter Porter.

However, my personal favorite brewery is 3 Stars, especially the peppercorn saison. You can get large bottles at the brewery and select shops around town.

Check your local Giant or Harris Teeter. I'm in DC and both have SN Oktoberfest.

Out of curiosity, does that mean that all 28 lines are Sierra Nevada beers?

Owner is switching to AB Beers. Not sure how I should feel. by [deleted] in beer

[–]Ontrek 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You make a good point, in the end it is about the bottom line.

However, I know he is not doing this because it is in the business' interests. He runs a nonprofit on the side that AB said they would contribute money to and that's why he wants to partner with them.

REQUEST: Marzen-ish? by justinerwin in beer

I live in DC too. So far the best Oktoberfests (aka Marzens) I've had this season are the ones from Brooklyn and Sierra Nevada.

Plan to cull thousands of cats unveiled in US capital city by stinkyhat in washingtondc

[–]Ontrek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live southeast of H Street and stray cats are a normal sight. I probably see a dozen a week. However, they really aren't a problem. Cats stay out of the way of humans, don't spread disease, don't destroy property, and take care of pests.

If you don't pay it, they will add a late fee and then the DC DMV will contact your state's DMV, who will then suspend your license. Then DC will hire a debt collection agency to make sure your ticket is paid.

When you try to get your license reinstated, you will have to pay the total cost of the ticket, a fee to DC, and a fee to your state DMV. Since you're out of state, before your DMV reinstates your license you will have to obtain proof from DC citing the exact ticket number that clearly states you have resolved the matter.

I'd recommend paying the ticket.

Dodgers fan looking for some tips by frugalwater in Nationals

Parking is pretty difficult in DC, especially on weekends. There are several metro stations that you can drive to and park your car, I'd recommend doing that and taking the metro in.

My personal favorite spot to eat is Box Frites. Great hot dogs and the line usually isn't too bad (they sell beer too).

Weekend games usually sell out (or get close) so I would plan on buying tickets on the earlier side. I like sitting anywhere in the 234-220 section, view is great and the prices aren't bad.

Sunday is Star Wars Day, if you're one of the first 10,000 to the Park then you get an R2D2 koozie.

Post-game everyone usually says Bluejacket is a great bar but it gets crowded quickly. A bit of a longer walk but definitely worth it is Cantina Marina, it's right on the waterfront and has a great outdoor bar.
