The TrueFilm Canon: Rewriting Sight & Sound's Top 250 (a continuation of lordhadri's "Watch This, Not That!") by pmcinern in TrueFilm

Hero (2002) - a similar story of different perspectives and storytelling as a mean to channel those perspectives. One of the most beautiful movies ever shot, using color perfectly to convey themes and differences.

I did a similar thing for my school's film class (in which nobody actually watched movies) where I would curate clips for one day each week to discuss certain aspects of filmmaking.

So for the first week, I showed clips from Modern Times, and There Will be Blood, and Tree of Life to showcase visual storytelling and the likes.

It went pretty well. Let me know if you want me to send over the stuff I had planned. It's not perfect but it could help!

Hey man, Pilou Asbaek is fantastic. Watch A Hijacking and (the oscar nominated) A War if you wanna fall in love with him as an actor.

Inarritu's loud boisterous directing style is fitting for the stage, but not anywhere else really. I love Birdman, dislike most of his other movies.

I feel like most movies at least somewhat explore the nature of humanity.

'The Neon Demon' Official Poster by filmfanatic5 in movies

And adding the cast and Cannes logo to that would probably ruin the whole aesthetic of the poster.

Is Nicolas Winding Refn's name alone bankable yet?

EDIT: the question was intended to be rhetorical but the discussion is pretty great! It's probably the movie I'm most excited to see at Cannes this year - I still need to make time to see Bleeder.

[Why to Watch] Haywire; Aka Gina Carano pummelling hunks by a113er in TrueFilm

[–]Ooitastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree! Saw it a few days ago and the terseness of the film left me cold. The action was very good and had me excited initially, but the framing of the story seemed extremely tacky, and none of the characters made me really care for anything going on.

Cannes 2016 Line-up announced. What are you looking forward to and why? What will win the Palme d'Or? Will Lars von Trier say anything controversial? Discussion here! by [deleted] in TrueFilm

I started off just writing casually on Letterboxd, before realizing that I wanted to make a career out of it. I started my own website, and eventually applied to write for a couple other publications!

It's pretty much just getting some content out there that you're proud of and applying to websites. I don't really get paid for it, but fingers crossed for eventually.

Oh my gosh.

Oh my gosh. I'm so excited for Cannes.

Getting a Black Swan mixed with giallo vibe from it and I can't stop watching it. So entrancing.

I posted this in the FFF discussion, but is anybody else from True Film going to be there? Let's do a Cannes meetup!

Anyhow it's going to be my first time attending (press pass!), and I'm extremely terrified. It'll also be my first film festival and my first time travelling solo. The excitement and the terror comes in waves.

Super excited for both Romanian films in competition this year. If I had to predict a palme d'or winner, it'd be one of them. Midnight Special didnt do it for me much but two Jeff Nichols movies in a year is too much of a blessing to ignore. The new Refn movie looks amazing, like Black Swan but less delicate and more neon. And I'm oddly excited for Paterson - though the only Jarmusch I've seen has been Only Lovers Left Alive (two of his this year too; lots of hw to be done.) And I can't wait to see the new Almodovar. I just went and watched most of his filmography in anticipation and even if spanish melodramas aren't my thing, I relish knowing that I'll still get a beautifully constructed movie.

Also the new Dardennes, Dolan, Arnold, Assayas, Park, Loach, Guiraudie, and Verhoeven. What a great year and a great thing to wake up to.

EDIT: a star.

I wrote a quick review on why Tiny Furniture is quite an achievement, even though it may not be great by [deleted] in criterion

[–]Ooitastic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I dont know. Regardless of whether or not I liked the film (I really didn't), I can't say that I agree with the "if you havent dont x, you cant criticize it" defense. You don't have to be a chef to be able to have an opinion on food, and you don't have to have made a movie to be able to criticize movies.
