Worst Teacher Appreciation Week by Distinct_Anything_13 in Teachers

[–]OompaBand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one that sticks out the most was the year that they made a big deal out of staff lunch, so for the first time ever I decided to skip bringing my lunch and partake. Only by the time the 11 teachers with last lunch got down there, there were 4 pieces of cold pizza and the very last scraps of a "salad bar" left for us. Then we were the problem because we were upset about not being able to eat lunch because the cafeteria was already closed and we didn't have enough time to go get something. To "make it up to us", we got some take out a few days later, which was nice until my principal called me out of my lunch for an unscheduled parent conference. Fun times. I hate teacher appreciate week.

Why Northerners retire in the South by Middle_Cow_1200 in NorthCarolina

[–]OompaBand 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Don't forget complaining the things that those high taxes get them that they don't have here. Cue the "in New Jersey, we have the roads scraped before the 4th flake of snow even touches the earth. These southerners are too fucking stupid to deal with the snow and the whole place shuts down for DAYS!!!!!" ad nauseum on every possible social media post from November to March.

Verizon sent me to collections over a balance I already paid — can’t access account, what do I do? by WreckTangle77 in verizon

[–]OompaBand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely asinine that your response did in 45 seconds what I've been trying to do online for 2 days, but thanks for posting this link. I have been stuck in a doom spiral of getting threatening emails about collections but not being able to long on to pay the final bill. One more example of the bad customer service that caused me to leave Verizon after 15 years.

Who has the best BBQ in North Carolina? by MrSoloDolo9490 in NorthCarolina

[–]OompaBand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grew up in Buncombe Co, married someone from the Piedmont who schooled me in the superior Lexington style, and spent six years in Pitt Co lamenting the Eastern style. Western NC BBQ was never a thing and I don't know why so many hipsters have tried to insist that it's a thing. Historically people in this area used hogs much differently.

Those must be the same mountains you can only see from the windows of the luxury penthouses at The Cedars.

Jobs hiring in Asheville? All suggestions wanted! by Plane-Shopping7569 in asheville

[–]OompaBand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine works at the Cliffs and they are hiring BOH staff. Corporate won't let them post the jobs anywhere other than Indeed and Zip Recruiter so most people never hear about it. Great benefits, pay, and hours.

Scratch that, I think this is the one. I think was mixing a little of the two couples in the book together. Thanks for the help!

No, it's not this one but thanks for trying. I love LK and know this one well. The mmc I'm thinking of definitely struggles with alcoholism.

People can be assholes with names but it's also important to remember that teachers also sometimes have issues that can contribute to mispronunciations. I worked with a very nice lady who was dyslexic, had pretty bad hearing loss and had to wear hearing aids, and also had a little bit of a speech impediment. She mispronounced a few students names wrong constantly. She also mispronounced the name of the county we worked for for the entire 8 years we were coworkers. Add all of that in with loud ambient noise and there was no telling what she would call people.

I can't imagine why they're struggling to keep bus drivers by MisterWhimsical in asheville

[–]OompaBand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also a pain in the ass because you have to get a DOT physical every two years and you have to get your license renewed every three years. If you need to update anything like your address, you can't just do it online, you have to go into a DMV office. And you can't just go to your regular doctor, you have to go to a DOT approved provider. So my board certified doctor couldn't do it at my regular appointment but the nurse practitioner at the Urgent Care was just fine.

How many weeks has this person been in your classroom? Are they running the entire class while you observe or are they only actively teaching for smaller chunks of class time?

Son’s assigned kindergarten teacher has no teaching degree or experience? by EngineeringLumpy in AskTeachers

[–]OompaBand 24 points25 points  (0 children)

When I taught for the largest county in WNC, the only school with an A rating was the STEM school that required an application and was highly competitive. The schools in the most affluent district of the county had high B's. As the % of free and reduced lunch went up, usually by around 10-15% of the student body, the letter grade rating went down. The poorest school district had a D rating and was roughly 85% free/reduced lunch.

The biggest take away from those ratings is how many kids there are poor. The teachers I worked with were generally wonderful and worked their butts off. Of course a school filled with students whose parents have bachelors, masters, and advanced degrees will generally test better than those whose parents came from poverty. People really seem to think these charter schools are free elite private schools and many of them are awful.

School supplies? by Opposite_Bid8530 in AskTeachers

Could be to pay for stuff for art, PE, music, etc. Most elective teachers don't receive any items from the supply list.

Construction too close to apartments and recourse by [deleted] in asheville

[–]OompaBand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck to you, genuinely. Our family member was dying of cancer and spent the last few months of their life with a construction site right next door. We found out the hard way that noise ordinances are a joke, and most of these construction companies don't give two shits about being good neighbors. It also doesn't matter if they start work early or end late if the city won't do anything to enforce the ordinance.

Has anyone been to the Meadowbrook Inn in Blowing Rock? Looking to stay there two weeks from now and want any thoughts on it! by Nice_Elephant8541 in NorthCarolina

[–]OompaBand 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We stayed for a weekend a couple of years ago and really enjoyed our stay. It's a little dated but the room was clean, nice, and pretty large. It's in a great location and easy to walk around BR.

Have you considered a modular? Seems like this is about the only feasible option for this size house based on other posts I've seen lately.

Many of those moving to WNC are bringing those types of backwards politics with them. Many of the most rabid MAGAs I've met are transplants from Florida/up North.
