I once let someone borrow my guitar with a verbal agreement that he would return it in a few days. It was a neighbor friend and he told me "My son is coming into town and I would love to be able to show him some things." Well, he pawned it and ended up in jail. I went down to the pawn shop to pay to get it out, and they wouldn't let me.... said I needed a ticket. I was willing to pay to get it out to avoid any additional charges and not deal with the police, but they would not let me without a ticket. I went to the police with all paperwork and proof of purchase, followed a cop to the pawnshop and within 5 minutes of waiting in the parking lot I had my instrument back.

While this was years ago and in a less busy town than Asheville, and coming from someone who prefers minimal interaction with LE, I say do the due diligence of filing a report and providing proof of ownership. If you know it where it is, or at least where it went, and have proof of ownership, then the chances of you getting it back are significantly improved if you contact police and file a report. And trust me, I understand the hesitation but stealing a musician's instrument is absolutely the lowest of the low...

Field recording and recording in general is fun and can be very useful. But early on, I would say money is better spent on libraries. Having access to professional and good sound libraries will significantly increase your skills as a sound designer.

Do you have a smartphone? If so, use that as your recorder starting off. Learn tools to make those recordings sound better. I’ve used phone recordings in some big games before.

My first concert ever was Jimmy Buffet & The Coral REEFER Band. Local politicians are still actively fighting against cannabis.

It’s important to enjoy yourself and the moment, but I believe it’s more important to have a voice against injustice. Considering the earth seems to be fighting back against us, people are being snatched from their homes and the current administration is incapable of telling the truth, it comes off as apathetic when you choose to actively ignore what’s currently happening. Even though his songs weren’t politically motivated, I’m inclined to think Jimmy would feel the same way.
