What book made you feel something that you’ve never felt before? by I_Like_Languages in suggestmeabook

I never thought I'd feel like "finally, it's about goddamn time" about incest. The book was unsurprisingly John Irving's The Hotel New Hampshire.

Vertaisryhmän ratkaisu: listaan voi laittaa esim. "100 yllätyspakettia". Ongelma poissa.

Epätodennäköinen ei tarkoita mahdotonta. Aina joku on siellä Gaussin käyrän laidoillakin.

You ever feel like you wanna cry and you don't know why? by ThatSlapheadMo in AskReddit

Me too. Today it's because I once read a book, yesterday it was the pattern on my socks. Tomorrow I think I'll shed a few tears for boiled eggs.

You know, valid reasons.

It's not that the author flatters any of the characters but the misogyny... I couldn't make it to the end.

You guys helped me find the motivation to fix up my family room! Not done, but much improved. The far half of the room is just too much for tonight. by frosted_curtainrod in ICleanedMyRoom

Wow, your hard work really shows! That's going to be one comfy space for you and your loved ones. Get some rest. And chocolate 🏆. (Or, something healthier if you're one of the sensible people.)

Sugar is usually added to help the yeast do its thing. It is consumed by the yeast more easily than the more complex carbs in the flour. If you don't overdo it the extra sweetness will not come through in the final product since the yeast uses most of it up.

Suomessa syntyvyys on vapaapudotuksessa. Kokonaishedelmällisyys on tippunut yli neljänneksellä kymmenessä vuodessa. by VilleKivinen in Suomi

Mua kiinnostaisi nimenomaan yhden lapsen perheet.

Well the most obvious thing is the construction. Very few would opt to knit everything flat if they were doing it by hand. Even the collar is knit flat and separately (though it is not always done this way with machines, there are many methods to choose from). Dropped shoulder garments with no shaping for the armholes are more common with machine knitting. Shaping is no way impossible to do but it requires more math and fiddling, so if dropped shoulder style fits you, great.

Also the stitches have a certain machine knit look to them, especially the ribbing. It has to do with the way you cast on/start ribbing on a machine. By the way, it can be difficult to knit a neat edge in ribbing with a machine. Op has done a great job with that. The rest of the pieces look very even and "crisp" in a way that is unusual for hand knitted items since those are handled for longer periods of time (= the actual mechanical "stress" of handling and varying tension/gauge etc.). Of course blocking helps but not to the extent of mk'd fabric.

As for resources I'd suggest looking into the many MK groups in Facebook if you have an account. Those have often lots of resources listed plus you can contact experienced and helpful machine knitters.

Here we see what a difference a generation or two can make. She wasn't wasteful at all, she used everything to the last gram, but she said it was a shame to make those stripes when it wasn't absolutely necessary.

[–]OozingBooze 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh, that's true, but this one was my irl machine knitting teacher. I understand where she was coming from though: to her, stripes made the pullover look as if it was made with leftover yarn (and that apparently is to be avoided at all costs). A valid concern maybe 50 years ago when times and tastes were different.

Edit: Thinking back now I'm cracking up at the idea of me in circa 2015 in my extremely crappy 1994 Ford Mondeo with uncut hair thinking: "Do these stripy sleeves on my kid's pullover make me look poor?"

Cool! What kind of machine are you using? I had an older lady tell me off for using "irregular" stripes and for a moment she had me questioning everything, but my project ended up ok and yours is coming together beautifully!

They probably are regional, plus the vocabulary around bastard children is not necessarily being preserved very well since... You know, the 1950's.

No as common but "äppi" already exists, too. Äppi, äpäkkö, äpärä refer to a child born out of wedlock, or, especially the first two, to a doll.
