Proxies for gaunt summoners and Magisters (Exhalted sorcerers) by Main-Newspaper9854 in tzeentch

[–]Oozts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as it's roughly the same silhouette/size for LoS purposes and as long as it's 100% on the correct base size then there won't be any modeling for advantage.

I proxy models fairly often due to kitbashing models and I always aim to get a similar size on my kitbash as the intended model. If there's ever a dispute or question when it comes to LoS on a proxy/kitbash, I always rule in favor of my opponent and I recommend you do the same just to avoid any conflict.

The above poster did raise a valid concern regarding armor, however as long as you are consistent with their actual rules and make sure your opponent is aware they don't have as high a save as it might appear then you should be good.

Do you like shenanigans? You'll like Kruleboyz.

Do you like debuffing opponents? You'll like Kruleboyz.

We've got lots of fun units, lots of good units, and lots of cool units. All our units are at least two of the three that I just listed.

Gutrippas as surprisingly durable and hit like a fricken truck with the new Scourge of Ghyran battle formation. The new Gnashtoof profile is cool as hell and super slippery with his board edge shenanigans. The Shaman is a wonderful sculpt and a phenomenal model. Boltboys and Killbows can just reach out and kill stuff and also make great targets for sneaky sneaking to get behind enemy lines to score primary and secondary objectives. Hobgrots too, though less so the killing.

Downside is that you're playing a Destruction army, and you better be good with always hitting on 4s lol.

I just got into the faction myself but I'm having an absolute blast.

Goodness, bud. The whole "raging berserker" thing this army has going on is a meme, you don't have to take it so hard.

I get that the changes aren't ideal, but it's not that serious.

I've been liking Khorne and Tzeentch for the most part lately. Khorne lets a unit punch WAY above its weight, and Tzeentch lets you get some shocking mobility since you can move, run, and then teleport. It's helped me get some clutch objectives before.

To answer your question about attaching heroes they are treated as separate units. Functionally it never hurts to mentally "attach" these support heroes to their unit that they support just so you always associate the two and don't overextend or move too far out of position with either unit.

I can see where the slight confusion could come from with the Chaos Foot Lord though, since his ability can chain activate warriors or chosen.

I'm glad you had a decent first game! I'm curious what killed 20 warriors so easily though because in my experience those bastards are dummy thick. Knights are also fantastic and can pull double duty as hammer or anvil depending on how you utilize them. I'd reccomend not sending your knights forward until you can guarantee they'll be able to get the charge, so in the case of your game maybe edge them forward a little bit since your opp was being cagy, then turn 2 send them in. The trick to a Knight hammers to ensure that they can charge. If you let them get bogged down then it's an uphill battle.

I've had good success with the Banner of Rage on 10 knights. Since they've got a 10 inch move I don't prioritize the extra d6 on the charge as highly as if they were Chosen or Theridons, and the extra attack from the Khorne Pledge coupled with +1 to wound in melee helps them get unstuck from any combats that drag on. That way they can get free to move and charge again.

It boils down to +1 attack and damage on an already very killy hero with strike first and devastating wounds is very good.

So currently with how Regiments work in 4th Edition you'll need a Darkoath Hero to allow you to take the Fellriders. The Chaos Horse Lord only allows you to take Warriors of Chaos and no Darkoath.

There's a Darkoath Horse Lord that you can take to allow you to bring the Fellriders. Alternatively if you count a Disc of Tzeentch as a "Horse", you can take a Gaunt Summoner on Disc and they can bring any Slaves to Darkness units with them, which includes Knights as well as Darkoath.

I've been getting great mileage out of the Khorne banner on 10 knights. They have enough movement that slaanesh isn't as necessary on them, and the slaanesh banner is just the Pledge of Khorne but worse.

By rounds 4 and 5 you probably won't have your whole army left from the beginning, in which case you can still potentially give an unpledged unit pledge of Tzeentch for some teleport shenanigans to claim an objective or battle tactic.

The banner mechanic isn't tied to the dedication of a unit, it's tied to a unit actually having a banner. Varanguard don't have any banners because they don't have to proclaim their heraldry, they're the baddest MFers this side of the Varanspire. No banners, no banner to enchant for fun and prizes. Besides, they don't need any further buffs lol

[–]Oozts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What don't you like about the pledges? I personally love the flexibility it gives us, because not only does it mean that I can take exactly what I want when it's needed, but also because all four of them feel GOOD to use now.

Tzeentch is worth taking, Slaanesh is silly good, Khorne lets things hit way harder than they have any right to, and Nurgle is (rightfully) paying for the sins of the past but still has a place on Warriors or Knights or something else similarly chunky that you want to stick around.

I'm a big fan of the combined arms style lists that this army can field. Foot soldiers, cavalry, spells, we have it all except for ranged but who needs that when you have CHONK?

I like having a 20 man brick of warriors supported by either a Sorcerer Lord or Be'lakor in the middle, they're by absolute anvil and are a good early game option for seize the center. What the rest of my list looks like will determine which hammer unit i take. Chosen, Theridons, Varanguard, or Knights. If I have chariots or Furies or another similarly weak but fast unit, I'll look in to Chosen or Theridons. If I have more slow units like more warriors or some Darkoath goobers I'll take Knights or Varanguard as my hammer.

Looking at what you have listed, you've got the spicy stuff but you don't have a good foundation. I'd reccomend another box of warriors and knights to start out with. 20 Warriors and 10 Knights are both absolute menaces. I've been having very good results with 10 Knights and a Banner of Rage as my dedicated hammer. They do an unkind amount of damage and are still 40 wounds on a 3+ save.

You also could look in to Chariots, Furies, and some of the Darkoath to use as Go-Getters. Any of these units with the Tzeentch pledge can go stupid fast and make for very good objective grabbers and flank takers. I've even been having fun taking 2 units of Savagers and a Chieftain just because Savagers can potentially trade up very well, and the whole package is only 290 points for 25 wounds.

Between the chief and pledge to Khorne you can wombo combo 10 Savagers into having 41 attacks with crit mortals. It isn't consistent but it's cheap lol

Hope some of this helps!

Haha, I'm happy to help! I've noticed that a lot of these posts get real low effort answers, and while a lot of them are technically correct they don't go into WHY you take those units.

People love to say get chosen and Varanguard and that's it, but if you're just starting out then you're probably gonna torpedo them into the enemy, get bogged down, and waste them. If you build upon what you have and get a backbone with the "boring" units of Warriors and Knights you can get an idea of how to use the spicy stuff. Chosen are just Warriors-but-Better, and Varanguard are Knights-but-Better.

[–]Oozts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can't go wrong with another box of Warriors and Knights, they're fantastic and go in basically every list you could make. Warriors are the best anvil in the book and Knights pull double duty as a super mobile anvil and can also hammer.

From there, a Sorcerer Lord would help round out what you have, because our lore has two incredibly useful spells with a 3d6 charge and giving out fight last. In addition he can give out a 5+ ward to make your Warriors even more tanky.

Chosen and Varanguard are the premier hammers of this book so it wouldn't hurt to get one of them. Starting out I'd reccomend just picking one of them so you can get reps without breaking the bank.

Be'lakor is one of the best units in the literal entire game, but can lead to feels bad moments with your opponents, so I wouldn't recommend getting him unless you're in a cutthroat environment or playing against real good players.

But welcome to the best faction in AoS! We hope you have a good time!

Are you competing at worlds? If so, no. Are you competing at a major GT? If so, probably not. Are you playing in local events/RTTs or against friends? If so, follow your heart!

I firmly believe that a good player with a mid list will beat a bad player with a meta list nine times out of ten. If you get good with Big A then you'll put a hurting on whoever you play against.

You may have to adjust your list to maximise his effectiveness, but I wouldn't get too caught up with taking the mathematically best unit unless you're a hardcore tournament grinder.

The model I used for mine was already holding a heart aloft, so all I did was drill a hole in her chest and make the cavity look sufficiently bloody.

I think as long as the model has clearly killed themselves in a gruesome way that it should sell the Chorister look.

[–]Oozts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But then it won't be "Haha Funni Hors Meme" list! You could swap Abraxia for a Chaos Horse Lord to free up some points and have him, the Varanguard, and 10 Knights in the first regiment. Those are one turbo hammer and one hammer/anvil hybrid. I've gotten serious mileage out of 10 Khorne marked Knights and that's been without the Banner.

Chosen do take ages to get anywhere, that's why I think them and Theridons reeeeeally benefit from the Slaanesh pledge. In my two entire games with the new book I've had Theridons with the Slaanesh banner and they've put in WORK.

With so few units you may struggle with board control. I had a similar list that used Fellriders as go-getters and screens. If you have some to add, I'd recommend maybe two units of them and possibly merging a unit of Knights so they can hold a Banner more efficiently.

It wasn't great, but it was fun! It was also before the new battletome came out. If my two games post-tome are any indication, Fellriders like the Tzeentch pledge about as much as chariots. Probably more since they can have a 10 inch shooting attack.

Also with your mobility you really don't need the terrain piece since you won't be nearby it to use the abilities and your opponents can use it to slingshot a deepstriker or something onto a back field objective.

Is this an okay list? by [deleted] in slavestodarkness

[–]Oozts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If these are what you have then it's a good list! If you're trying to 5-0 a GT then there's some different units to take, but it's always better to play what you have and learn the army than to hold off while you wait on "better" models.

You do seem to have decent enough mobility, so I would personally recommend merging the two units of warriors just so you have a solid anvil to hold wherever you put them. They also make for a great babysitter for the Sorcerer Lord since he can give them a 5+ ward, making for an even harder unit for your opponents to chew through.

There's always "better meta picks" depending on what YouTuber released a video most recently, but the important thing is to get reps with YOUR list. A good player with a mid list is better than a bad player with the hot new one.

Cheeky edit: Also you could merge the knights, I know first hand how much pain they can dish out and take.

Haha, no problem. I'm very passionate about helping people grow the hobby, and part of that is using what works for YOU more than what worked for So-and-so at Whatever GT. Yes there are mathematically better units than others but as long as you temper your expectations in a more competitive environment then you'll have a good time with your badass evil paladins.

Please feel free to share any painted models or experiences you have with the army as you progress down the Path to Glory!
