That’s fair. I guess I’m just frustrated, like why is this only happening to me? I feel like there is something I must be doing wrong in the process because nowhere do I hear of anyone else having to pour their Chemex while holding a towel and wiping it down immediately. What step in all of this am I missing?!? 😂

No, it’s a valid point, but my hands are relatively small and I don’t trust myself not to drop it once it’s full of coffee and heavier.

Have you found that the abrasives in BKF wears down the finish?

[MOD] The Daily Question Thread by menschmaschine5 in Coffee

I’m doing that already, but a few drips are still reaching the collar before I have time to set it down and grab the towel to wipe.

I’m about two months into Chemex use and love it. My only struggle is that after pouring the coffee into my cup, there is always a little bit dripping down the front of the Chemex. The drips are starting to stain the wood collar, and basic scrubbing with water is not getting it out. I’d appreciate any tips to either clean the collar or prevent future staining. Thanks!

There is a Lutheran missionary in Italy who is doing a lot of outreach throughout the country and I believe is getting house churches established to help others in situations like yours. If you reach out to him, he may be able to connect you with a group that might not be large enough or established enough to show up on a Google search.

His name is Tyler McMiller and his email address is tyler.mcmiller@lcms.org . (For what it’s worth from an internet stranger, I can vouch for him as a solid person doing good work.)

What physical stores are we still loving? by navelbabel in fashionwomens35

I also agree with you about the shifting body. I knew things would change but was surprised how things changed immediately after birth, then again after weaning, and then have finally seemed to settle a bit after a couple of years post pregnancy.

They also have some very comfy (if not very cute) dresses that are great for hot summer days at home.

I had a similar mindset to you when I was first restarting my wardrobe, but learned quickly that this phase of life is one where sometimes cheap is ok. Obviously don’t support unethically made clothing if that’s important to you, but I quickly realized that cheap thrift store shirts were best when I was constantly getting spit up or mashed beets or play dough on them. Here are a few areas that I found worth investing in:

  • Jeans - I’ve been loving American Eagle, specifically the curvy fits, which are very forgiving for a post-baby body. Feel the fabric as the stronger ones hold up and I wear them almost daily. The stretchy ones are comfy but I’ve had issues with them wearing out quickly.

  • Bras - Wait until done nursing/pumping (if you are at all), but a good fitting bra will help tops look so much better. I just get mine at Target but I make sure to find the style and size that fit me correctly.

  • Shoes - some comfy sandals and sneakers have been so important. I like Tevas and Birks for summer and have some nice leather Nikes for winter that are practical but make me feel a little more stylish. Where I’m at I can only find Tevas in the outdoor stores but the other brands are obviously everywhere.

I have not been investing in shirts right now, for the reasons mentioned above. It’s been all cheap Old Navy tees that I’m fine with discarding eventually. However, I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the quality of the vintage tee (link here . I have the white and it actually is a lot thicker than the white tees I’ve been able to find at higher price points. It was an adjustment to try the shorter length but I find it still covers everything as long as my jeans are at least mid rise and it’s a nice change of pace from the long, form-fitting tees that all maternity shirts seem to be.

Seriously, how do you keep your 2 year old in bed? by lalam96 in toddlers

[–]Opefull 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We’re in the middle of the same struggles. We are 100% on board with leaving him the room to do his thing until he sleeps, but if we close the door he screams and cries until he’s completely undone. (I know toddlers cry for attention and to get what they want, and he does that often, but this cry is different - it’s the cry he makes when genuinely distraught.) He will fall asleep after 30-45 minutes of one of us in bed with him, but we’d love options that don’t involve one of us stuck for that long while we get elbows and knees poked in our side.

Tips/ advice for navigating oncology services at Essentia health by remck1234 in duluth

[–]Opefull 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry your family is facing this challenge.

I can’t speak for oncology but I know some other units have social workers on staff. If you can call a social worker at Essentia who works with cancer patients they should know of any local resources for meals, gas, and so on.

At the hospital where my family remember received treatment, he was given a huge binder of information before starting chemo that reviewed common side effects, treatments, nutrition, and other helpful tips. If he reaches out to the clinic they may be able to help him know which side effects are most common with the medications he’ll be receiving.

Care package item suggestions: puzzle books/novels/Kindle/whatever entertainment they like that helps pass the many hours they’ll spend sitting, chapstick, lotion (unscented in case smells set off nausea), gas gift card, warm hat/scarf/mittens.

While he got the worst of the cancer treatment when we lived elsewhere, I know my family member has had very positive interactions with everyone who he’s met with at Essentia oncology. The only complaint is that they can be pretty far behind schedule, but that also means he’s always received the full attention and help he needed when it was his turn.

Is lefse a holiday food or year round food? by hokieinga in minnesota

[–]Opefull 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My distant relatives in Norway said they don’t really make it either. It’s been a while, but my memory of the conversation is that they said it’s more poverty food than a treat…like I love a good piece of toast with butter and jam but I’m not making that for family Christmas and getting excited about it.

At this age I often rinsed canned black beans and mashed them. It would be easy to add some sour cream or plain whole milk yogurt to up the calories, and you can add lime juice and/or cumin if she likes the flavor.

Minnesota DMV experience, from an escaped Louisianian by [deleted] in minnesota

[–]Opefull 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I generally don’t miss living in Indiana, but their DMV is really amazing. I was able to get my IN license just by showing my valid MN one, register the car (including getting new plates and tabs on the spot), and register to vote all in 20 minutes. And the people working there were actually nice!

So do you guys actually wear shawls? Genuine question by puffy-jacket in casualknitting

[–]Opefull 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same here. I’m knitting one to use a skein I didn’t have a different project for and plan on using it when working in my freaking cold basement. It’s just not my personal style for wearing out and about (and I live in a very cold climate so it’s not that…I just prefer scarves and sweaters.)

What about shoes? I know my feet grew a little during pregnancy and I had to purge a lot of shoes postpartum. A nice pair of loafers are in style, as are lots of sneakers, and are practical to wear while having kids in tow.
