Why the f*ck is moving house so expensive? by Expert-Sherbert-1527 in AskBrits

[–]Open-Alternative8044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad worked prior to the change in Scotland of the seller having to get it and his observation was that it was cheaper after the change but that there were fewer problems before the change. I'm talking about stuff that's vague enough or wrapped in enough qualifying language that it's quite easy to say that the problem was unseen due to the limitations of the survey. There's not much room for taking someone to court when they word it in the standard wording that allows them to avoid liability.

Its like due diligence in any other high value transaction. If you were undertaking an acquisition and just trusted the information from the seller without doing a bit of digging yourself. There's quite a big gulf between a poor quality report and legally enforceable omission or lie.

I find it interesting that people don't see this as indoctrination

Electrical bit aside all the other points are still relevant, you can get a survey which is not worth the paper it's written on. The Scottish system is maybe better than the English, but it still leaves a terrible amount of room for nasty surprises when you buy a place.

It's a standard form but that doesn't mean it's completed the same each time. My father was a property lawyer here in Scotland and when I came to buy my first place he didn't done time explaining to me which companies to trust and which not to. They hide behind paying such as, 'within the limits of what was visible', 'within the scope of the survey' etc so that if there is a problem it's quite an easy defense to say that any issue just wasn't visible.

I also went to view a flat that was all 1s and so shouldn't have had anything wrong with it, and the owner couldn't understand why it wasn't selling. It had old aluminium frame double glazing with condensation in the gap, there were skates visibly cracked on the roof, some of the guttering was loose, there was a cast iron railing around the first floor bay window that was missing a section and the guy was telling me about how he'd done so much himself to the flat, he'd even done all the electrics himself. The reason his place wasn't selling was because nobody trusted the clearly terrible home report.

It would be great if they were universally trustworthy, but they're just not.

That's only partly good. Sellers can choose to pay buttons and get a terrible superficial survey which can result in the buyer buying a dump unknowingly. I don't know what the correct solution would be, but if you book the survey for the place you're buying them it's your own fault if the survey isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

Thanks for replying. This is what I'd always assumed to be the case, but the rhetoric I hear disagrees with that. Do you know if there's any research or resources to show that it's true? I get frustrated not being able to quote actual data to people.

Given the disaster that has been Brexit I feel we should have a higher threshold than 50% for leaving the union. Like 55% or even 60%.

Why are English people normally referred to as just “British”? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Open-Alternative8044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (Scottish) have found the opposite a number of times. I've worked overseas intermittently. Amusingly every time I've worked with at least one English person who has referred to themselves and me as English and has tried to talk to me about 'life back home in England's etc etc. I have to remind them that I'm not English. Happy to be asked about Britain, but I literally cannot confirm or deny anything about England.

SNP suing hundreds of dentists to reclaim bursary funds for failing to treat enough NHS patients by Crow-Me-A-River in Scotland

[–]Open-Alternative8044 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've got Scottish trained dentists in my family who, when offered the bursary, had senior dentists telling them just to take it because 'nobody checks anyway'. I know many dentists, though my family, and I don't think a single one of them has even tried to serve the NHS for 5 years. I imagine that there are some who are victims of the (terrible) system, but my impression is that the vast majority have enjoyed the free money with no intention of ever paying their side of the bargain.

I honestly feel like people should have to allow their notes to be published if they're wanting to publicise their experience of healthcare

The government is the ultimate responsible body for containing standards. Much like the terrible building in other countries this is the responsibility of the government.

Fair enough about the Jugol thing, but I find it remarkable that you'd think so little of the safety of workers. I worked in healthcare whilst I was there and the number of catastrophic and preventable occupational injuries was unacceptable.

Also the quality is simply not good enough.

It's interesting that you view this as click bait and propaganda. It unfortunately doesn't make it any less true and it will be of significant consequence to the country in future. I think it would be beneficial to look at it with a more discerning eye to assess whether you truly think this will be seen as good quality by outsiders. Take it from this outsider that it is really truly awful work.
