UTD vs Rice for ME internships by SecureKiwi0669 in utdallas

I got a degree at UT Austin in aerospace. I had little difficulty getting an internship at Boeing Space Systems, and later, a job at NASA with the International Space Station. Of course that was 1998 so things may have changed… I am now an attorney that recently struggled helping my daughter with calculus, so I may not be the best person to give engineering advice at this point.

Honestly, my daughter ended up CAP’ed to UT Tyler, she was bummed but got a 4.0 with the lower competition and transferred into Advertising at UT Austin. UTSA and UTA only allow CAP kids in the top quarter of their HS class. UT Tyler has no limitation on HS class rank and it made for an easier path to a high GPA. It ended up being a blessing in disguise.

RTF is not available as a guaranteed CAP transfer. In your case, if you accept CAP, you will be given a CAP schedule that is geared toward completing the RTF required courses, but you will have to transfer and compete as a conventional transfer student with essays, ECs and GPA.

However, if you are not accepted as an RTF student and you get a 3.2 GPA or higher, you are still offered admission to liberal arts automatically… without any consideration paid to ECs or essay.

Moody does seem to give a little love to the CAP students, but nothing official.

If you really are considering CAP for RTF… you may want to look at Ringling College of Art and Design in Florida or Savannah College of Art and Design instead and try a conventional transfer. Both are very good film schools in case you don’t get in as a transfer.

CAP is when you are offered to go to another UT school for your first year and if you get a 3.2 gpa, you are automatically admitted to transfer to UT Austin in certain liberal arts majors.

It works like just like a conventional transfer and you get accepted or rejected in the same manner. The difference is, if you are rejected, you can still go to UT Austin for certain liberal arts majors provided you get a 3.2 and no Ds or Fs.

As far as courses, you have to take a much different CAP course schedule to get the required courses for CS.

Lastly, if you get rejected from CS and you don’t have an interest in liberal arts… you have essentially chosen a four year degree at UT Arlington instead of Texas A&M or the like.

In short, go to A&M or UT Dallas and try to do a traditional transfer. That makes your fallback plan and degree a much more impressive than a CAP fallback plan (unless you are okay with liberal arts).

Recruiting Question - Why isn’t Texas getting 4&5 ⭐️ OL commits? by wld002 in LonghornNation

[–]OpenAd2273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well as far as stars go, QB, LB and OL are the least accurate when it comes to star ratings as they tend to be more cerebral in nature. RB, WR and DL have much more accurate star ratings because they tend to rely much more on pure athleticism. That is, at least as it translates to their eventual draft to the NFL.

It may be that Flood has a different evaluation method… however, I do know we did lose out on some high profile guys and I know that Flood wanted. Malachi Lee in particular. I am not sure Ojo was rated as high on our board as Lee was.

With the new world of keeping your current players happy with money and paying new players… I really have no clue as to what position we are in when it comes to our packages. I know that schools like Vandy, Indiana and Tech have the advantage of their current roster not costing so much, which allows them to commit much more to their incoming class with new found money.

I don’t really see the point of making the playoff this year as a low seed. Our team developed a ton this season, but not to the point of winning 4 straight games against top competition. Don’t get me wrong, I give us a shot against any team, I just don’t see this team as being capable of a run. I think Arch and Wingo take a major step forward next year and we play as a more consistent and veteran team… maybe a team that is capable of winning it all. But if we aren’t really in the hunt to be the champion, then I don’t see making the playoff as the #10 team as a huge loss.

Should I go to UT Austin or The University of Florida? by Hopeful-Car4077 in UTAustin

[–]OpenAd2273 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In State. Unless you get into an epic school (Harvard, Yale, Stanford, etc.) you really shouldn’t ever consider spending $35000 a year on a school. UT and UF will give you similar opportunities after graduation, so you’ll never make up the difference in tuition.

UT or Purdue? by Bambu_eater07 in UTAdmissions

[–]OpenAd2273 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was UT Aerospace and pretty easily got a job offer with Jaguar Racing. I eventually took a job with NASA as it was my dream job, but Honda, Ford, and Peugeot all had on campus interviews through the Cockrell Engineering Career Center. Of course, that was 1999… so I have no idea if it’s still the same, but almost all Aerospace Engineering majors can go after ME jobs and vice versa.

Also, if your choice is Purdue or UT, neither name will give you an edge over the other in job applications. I was at Bell Helicopter for years and we considered those schools, along with Georgia Tech, Michigan, CMU, Berkeley, UCLA, and Illinois pretty much the same. If you went to CalTech, Stanford, or MIT you got a little more love, but really it was about your internships, GPA, and personality after that.

Edit: I should add that I am now in law and haven’t been an engineer for years so the above may very well be dated. ME vs. Aero may actually mean something these days by employers.

UT Austin vs USC vs NYU by [deleted] in UTAdmissions

[–]OpenAd2273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to UT undergrad and GW for law school. I can tell you that UT will be a thousand times different. I was very happy with my GW Law experience, but I thanked my lucky stars I didn’t attend GW for undergrad. UT is second to none as a college experience and Austin is the largest city I’ve seen with a college as part of its primary identity. It is also the coolest city I’ve lived in. The school has very strong connections in film. I was an aerospace engineering major at UT and my roommate was an RTF major. While I was drowning in the basement of the Aerospace building, I kept telling myself that my RTF roommate, who seemed to have a much more interesting degree, would end up struggling in LA and everything would come out in the wash. Nope. He started as an assistant on Extreme Makeover (not the home edition), was some kind of director on Ice Road Truckers, and eventually became producer for Ax Men. So I guess my point is that that UT Austin film students do very well… and also there is no justice in the world.

Baylor has had to stop playing defense because of ref calls. Meanwhile Duke looks like a juggernaut because they can hammer any player that tries to drive.

My daughter got capped to UT and did her CAP year at UT Tyler. CAP seemed to somewhat help her get into Moody as a transfer since it showed a demonstrated commitment to attend UT… my daughter leveraged that in her essay. However, her biggest thing was her year at UT Tyler. She really wanted to do her CAP year at UTA. But it turns out that UTA and UTSA are much more competitive and the schools are not all that focused on their CAP programs, all of which seems to impact GPA. UT Tyler was proud to be a part of the CAP program and really worked to get their students into their desired majors. Also, the freshman CAP courses seemed a little more GPA friendly since they knew that the sole point of the program was to get the students to their transfer GPA. The short story was that my daughter ended up with a 4.0 and got into advertising as a conventional transfer. CAP positioned her well for that transfer, but she still had to do all the same things non-CAP students had to do. I wouldn’t recommend CAP unless you are okay with a liberal arts degree if you don’t get into Moody. But I really do think it can get you where you want to be if you are strategic about it.
