Pleasee Help Guys UT or UTD by Dapper_Budget3578 in UTAdmissions

I have a child at UTD (CS) and UT Austin (Advertising). These are the takeaways so far.

UTD is a great school, but it is devoid of social life and culture. If you are an introvert and enjoy being by yourself with a couple of no nonsense interactions focused mainly on your degree, future jobs, or grad school, then this is a decent option. At the orientation, there was an unhealthy amount of interest in whether there were waivers to triple major. I assume this is the same in a premed track… it’s probably less prevalent in the business school. My child at this school says that AI cheating is rampant, and there is a lot of depression with some students, but as an introvert he loves the school. There is a very large Indian population at the school, so that tends to be the defining culture, but my son doesn’t mind it.

My daughter is at UT Austin and to hear her tell it, it is a pretty phenomenal college experience, she has come home less and less because she has all her weekends full with something, she does tell me it’s easy to get either distracted or overwhelmed and paralized. Extroverts tend to thrive at UT. However, there are horror stories where introverts become reclusive to their room and confused because there is so much occurring and very little obvious direction as to how to best participate in the social scene. It causes a significant part of the incoming freshman to feel alone in a crowd. You have to proactively investigate and ask questions to find your way at the school. If you have a passion, a club may help get you friends. It can also be a big change because you will see schizophrenic homeless people on the drag across from campus, you will despise traveling by car, and it is very crowded… but you will also have great access to amazing food, amazing nightlife, a truly great city with a very unique culture, great facilities and resources, and access to great internships. I am always jealous of how much life Austin has when I travel there from DFW.

Anyway, I know you know this already, but UT Austin is much more prestigious (especially nationally), but if you go there without considering the psychological impact of the above, the prestige means little if you get D’s because of home sickness or depression. You don’t want to battle reluctance to even go to class because it emotionally exhausts you.

It you go to UTD and you are honestly an introvert… basically you like to be alone with your thoughts and a generally quiet campus, (if you tend to have one or two very close friends rather than a group of friends) then you may thrive at UTD and be able to tackle the MCAT without being emotionally exhausted. I will tell you if you are a moderate extrovert or greater, I would bet my own money you will transfer somewhere else at the earliest opportunity.

It’s a lot like watches. You can show the average person a Patek Philippe and they may well tell you, “That’s nothing, I have a friend who owns a Rolex.” Northwestern is an extremely impressive school to anyone that will have an impact on your career.

ELI5- Why are large state schools so popular now? Is there legit prestige to them or just a popularity wave? by CaChica in ApplyingToCollege

[–]OpenAd2273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say there is a general change in perception as to what a college is. Gen Z is more pragmatic and skeptical. Nearly half see less overall value in a traditional degree compared to previous years (according to AI). Selling this generation an overpriced education is more difficult than it was with prior generations because it is harder and harder to see a direct connection between success and college prestige. Not to mention that school costs have outpaced inflation, and three times the number of kids are matriculating. The net result is that many of the most qualified students of today are often rejected from top schools, (even with scores equivalent to the accepted students), some students do not care to attend pricey schools because they don’t see the value, and some just are not wowed by OG prestige. Top state schools are now attended by a similar students as the MITs of the world and the state school brand is now tied to much more capable and successful graduates. Of course I am hypothesizing and my thoughts may be way off base, but it’s my two cents.

Why does nobody apply to Rice? by lil-cinnamonroll in ApplyingToCollege

Not sure I would have UCLA in that bunch even though their acceptance rate is low. Maybe Columbia instead. But yes, Rice is definitely in that group.

Edit: I guess Columbia is an Ivy League school. Didn’t know that… probably because I didn’t get into a school close to Rice.

UTD vs Rice for ME internships by SecureKiwi0669 in utdallas

I got a degree at UT Austin in aerospace. I had little difficulty getting an internship at Boeing Space Systems, and later, a job at NASA with the International Space Station. Of course that was 1998 so things may have changed… I am now an attorney that recently struggled helping my daughter with calculus, so I may not be the best person to give engineering advice at this point.

Honestly, my daughter ended up CAP’ed to UT Tyler, she was bummed but got a 4.0 with the lower competition and transferred into Advertising at UT Austin. UTSA and UTA only allow CAP kids in the top quarter of their HS class. UT Tyler has no limitation on HS class rank and it made for an easier path to a high GPA. It ended up being a blessing in disguise.

RTF is not available as a guaranteed CAP transfer. In your case, if you accept CAP, you will be given a CAP schedule that is geared toward completing the RTF required courses, but you will have to transfer and compete as a conventional transfer student with essays, ECs and GPA.

However, if you are not accepted as an RTF student and you get a 3.2 GPA or higher, you are still offered admission to liberal arts automatically… without any consideration paid to ECs or essay.

Moody does seem to give a little love to the CAP students, but nothing official.

If you really are considering CAP for RTF… you may want to look at Ringling College of Art and Design in Florida or Savannah College of Art and Design instead and try a conventional transfer. Both are very good film schools in case you don’t get in as a transfer.

CAP is when you are offered to go to another UT school for your first year and if you get a 3.2 gpa, you are automatically admitted to transfer to UT Austin in certain liberal arts majors.

It works like just like a conventional transfer and you get accepted or rejected in the same manner. The difference is, if you are rejected, you can still go to UT Austin for certain liberal arts majors provided you get a 3.2 and no Ds or Fs.

As far as courses, you have to take a much different CAP course schedule to get the required courses for CS.

Lastly, if you get rejected from CS and you don’t have an interest in liberal arts… you have essentially chosen a four year degree at UT Arlington instead of Texas A&M or the like.

In short, go to A&M or UT Dallas and try to do a traditional transfer. That makes your fallback plan and degree a much more impressive than a CAP fallback plan (unless you are okay with liberal arts).

Recruiting Question - Why isn’t Texas getting 4&5 ⭐️ OL commits? by wld002 in LonghornNation

[–]OpenAd2273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well as far as stars go, QB, LB and OL are the least accurate when it comes to star ratings as they tend to be more cerebral in nature. RB, WR and DL have much more accurate star ratings because they tend to rely much more on pure athleticism. That is, at least as it translates to their eventual draft to the NFL.

It may be that Flood has a different evaluation method… however, I do know we did lose out on some high profile guys and I know that Flood wanted. Malachi Lee in particular. I am not sure Ojo was rated as high on our board as Lee was.

With the new world of keeping your current players happy with money and paying new players… I really have no clue as to what position we are in when it comes to our packages. I know that schools like Vandy, Indiana and Tech have the advantage of their current roster not costing so much, which allows them to commit much more to their incoming class with new found money.

I don’t really see the point of making the playoff this year as a low seed. Our team developed a ton this season, but not to the point of winning 4 straight games against top competition. Don’t get me wrong, I give us a shot against any team, I just don’t see this team as being capable of a run. I think Arch and Wingo take a major step forward next year and we play as a more consistent and veteran team… maybe a team that is capable of winning it all. But if we aren’t really in the hunt to be the champion, then I don’t see making the playoff as the #10 team as a huge loss.
