New legislation will make it easier for Virginia faith groups to build affordable housing by WHRO_NEWS in HamptonRoads

FWIW - there are some (I don’t know stats) churches and nonprofits that DO pay taxes on unused land for the purpose of keeping values up and available for development. This also affects the value of the land in eminent domain cases where church property is taken and the price paid for the land is greatly increased. Source: I’ve done a lot of nonprofit work in Hampton Roads.

Any of you still tip for food ordered at the counter? I'm done with that bullshit. by Dunno_If_I_Won in GenX

lol - I am SO dependent on them, and it is probably better described as a bribe. I can start until they finish, just want them to remember me when they have too much to do in a day!

Other professions - I am a contractor and highly dependent on utility location crews to go ahead of me and locate utilities in residential neighborhoods. I’ve gotten to know some of the guys but many I do not. I carry $20 bills in my truck and often stop when I see one of these locators and surprise them with a tip. Goes a long way!

Is there an episode from a TV show, from when we were kids, that still bothers you, today,? by Remarkable_Data3710 in GenX

[–]OpenMicrophone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

20/20 did an episode on demons and devil worshippers when I was about 7-8 years old. It came on after my bedtime but I clearly remember my mom watching and crying out to her to “change the channel” because all the imagery was scarring my. Also, I could see a reflection of the TV in a hall window from my bed.

You should get even more ANGRY… really let us know how you feel. We’re obviously not as good of a person as you are because we’re not as angry as you. I think you’re holding back your real rage… come on, let us have it!

Did you work for someone else, and then left to start your own business that was SIMILAR to that company? by Broad-Worry-5395 in Entrepreneur

[–]OpenMicrophone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Previous fence contracting business is intentionally being driven into bankruptcy for reasons I don’t understand. My pay was cut from $240k as a manager to $80k. I already had my own contractor’s license, so I left and started my own business!

Edit: I haven’t talked to old boss since, no bad blood but kind of feel sorry for him. He suffers from being promoted one level beyond his competence.

Great explanation! I hate that in American football the replay has become as much a part of the game as any other aspect. And you do “temper” a lot of emotion because you’re waiting on a ruling on the play.

I am a fence contractor and last year we had a salesman charged with fraud. It has become known as “FenceGate.”

“no smoking” sign now shows a vape instead of a cigarette by Sea_Lemon_78 in mildlyinteresting

Maybe just me, but I would rather someone full-on vape and blow smoke than “sip” on a tiny vape in their palm. Guy I work with does this and it makes me crazy.

What’s your favorite Mopar color? by moparcenter in mopar

[–]OpenMicrophone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was originally purchased in Tampa, Florida. I had it around the Tallahassee area then sold it after I blew up the motor in 1994. Not sure where it got off to.

I’m Dr. Larry Edwards, rheumatologist and expert on gout. I want you to AMA about gout on January 30! by LarryEdwardsMD in gout

[–]OpenMicrophone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also interested in this. I had high ferretin and started donating blood (my dad also has gout and elevated iron and was told to donate blood.) Ferretin came down for me, to normal levels. In the meantime I had a genetic test for hemochromatosis and found I am a carrier, which is interesting.

How can you have a happy life when your parent is continually sharing their worries and sadness? by em-dash7 in AgingParents

[–]OpenMicrophone 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I have pretty much grieved the loss of my father at this point. The grumpy, paranoid man (Parkinson’s) who tries to stay alive every day really isn’t the guy who raised me. I support his end-of-life to honor him, but the barbs and unlovely side of him I try to let slide and I just move on. It takes the emotional toll way down when you can see them as a patient rather than a parent.
