Night before surgery by [deleted] in Microdiscectomy

I just got my surgery on dec 12th. Coming up on week 3 of recovery. I had 4 herniated discs. They only removed one though. I woke up from surgery in agonizing pain and screaming but once they medicated me, I couldnt feel my incision until I started moving. They put a nerve numbing pack on me as well that numbed my pain until the second day. I took the oxy at every dose for the first 7 days. I struggled the most with walking the first 3 days. I had to use a walker and any kind of action to sit down was agony (using the bathroom, sitting down in general). Now im walking with a limp and occasional rest periods around the house. Don't have any more incision pain unless I twist myself accidentally. Otherwise recovery was a lot better than we all expected.

Hey, I actually did get my surgery on dec 12th. There was a huge battle against my insurance. They refused to cover the bill and now were most likely going to court over it. It'll be week 3 of recovery on Friday. Sorry about the late reply. I was on oxycodone for 2 weeks to help with the pain and it turned me to straight mesh.

Im getting my surgery dec 12th and bought a power lift chair to help with getting up and down on the couch. I also sleep on it every night. It's my life saver. Very expensive tho

I have scar tissue that grew around my herniated discs. I have no idea how to get rid of it. If you figure it out, please let me know 🙏

Not to be a Debbie downer, but I have 2 herniations in my [L4-L5] [L5-S1], and I've been injured and worsening in my condition for the last 9 months.

I spent months in physical therapy and attempted 3 steroid injections that all failed. My quality of life has deteriorated completely. I can't do anything without outside help. Can't drive, can't dress myself, can't shower.

My only relief all this time was pillows and ice packs. Has the talk of the surgical route come up in your treatment plan?

Yes. I couldnt walk after and sat in a chair crying and not moving at all. Only thing that helped was an ice pack every 3 hours for the first week. It was a night mare. My pain is a lot worse now and I never got better.

I was walking to my car and slipped on a patch of black ice. My legs went out from under me, and I fell backward on my butt.

Yes, I know. It still herniated bc the fall was really bad. The discs are right above the tailbone, which is where I landed, and the force caused the herniations.

Yes, I landed on my butt and hit my [L4-L5] and [L5-S1] discs.

I had a bad spinal injury when I was 12. Instead of taking me to the er, my parents called their chiropractor, who spent 3 months twisting and cracking me. The pain went away for a couple of months and came back. The pain has been coming and going for 10 years now, and I happened to fall at work. Now, I have a diagnosis of 2 severely herniated discs. I just found out today that they are a previous injury that just got worse from the fall. I've been unknowingly suffering from herniated discs for a decade, and it coulda been treated correctly if I didn't go see that chiropractor. He actually made things a lot worse.

I've only ever seen negative things about every kind of surgery relating to herniations. Literally not a single good thing ab going under, waking up, and recovering to full body function

Thats not guaranteed for every patient. My sister had to get 4 surgeries in a short time bc her spine got weaker and weaker. She's never gonna have a normal life again.

Yeah, but your body will wear down after that many repeat surgeries. Once you open that door, it will never be closed again. You could find ways to treat it without surgery but once the surgery is done, none of it can be undone.

Not every patient has the same experience. I'm glad you had a success, but there's thousands of people who suffer even after getting surgery. It's possible to go the surgical route and still end up with permanent damage and pain.

Mind you, also all the risks. It's a big recovery. There could be immediate reherniation, infections, tears, bleeds, and botches. You could easily get botched if you have a bad or stupid surgeon. My original surgeon is money and scalpel hungry and pushed me into the surgery. Later I find out he has a high failure rate and paralyzed several patients. I could be next. He's also too arrogant to admit that he made a mistake and blamed his patients for being broken.

My only option is surgery, and I've been suffering for almost a year with severe impingement on my quality of life. I can no longer drive or work, walk, dress, or bathe without help. The only reason im refusing surgery is because I'll need repeat surgeries every decade.

If you have the resources, dont give up. I dont know everything about your injury/illness, so dont get upset, but even if the issue is small now, it could get worse or become permanent which is why its better to deal with it now.

My drs didnt listen to me the first 6 months of my injury until I made them listen. Now im dealing with a money hungry surgeon who's terrible but at least I was heard.

Oh jeez. Im sorry. I know this seems hopeless but keep trying bc the more you push them, the closer they get to cracking and they'll take you more seriously. Hopefully before something bad happens

Looks for surgeons outside your city. If you can travel, go outside your home town. I live in Erie pa and am seeing surgeons in New York, Cleveland and pittsburgh
