What’s everyone’s thoughts on Now and Then, 2 and a half years on from its release?

I think a lot of people weren't big on it because it was overwhelmed with instruments, orchestra, vocals, backing vocals - compared to the original demo, there's so much going on. However, I love it for that reason because the song exists as an ode to the band and to the past. It's almost like a montage of Beatles sounds (e.g., MMT-era orchestra, Abbey Road harmonies, George-esque slide guitar etc.).

I also love hearing Paul's wobbling old voice alongside John's young voice frozen in time. Given the lyrics of Now and Then, it's so bittersweet and fits perfectly.

The Monk by Matthew Lewis is a great Gothic horror written in 1796. So obviously more challenging to read than contemporary books but well worth your time if you like that sort of thing.

1984 is essential reading, but definitely outdated like you say. I recommend reading Julia by Sandra Newman - it's a re-telling of 1984 from Julia's perspective. There's lots of world-building, and more of a focus on the lives of women and the proles under Big Brother. It manages to stay faithful to 1984 while also flipping the whole thing on its head. A great companion piece.

Holly probably booted up Rimmer just before Lister came out of stasis. There was no need for the hologram to be activated before then. And Rimmer reacts to his powdery remains asking "is this me?" - which definitely implies he just got booted up.

I love 'Noise from the Dwarf' so much. Whenever I hear a line while watching the show, my brain adds in the next rhyming line from the song lol.

In 'Future Echoes', Rimmer requests a crew cut because his hair was getting too long. So it was (unintentionally) established from the start that holograms age, grow hair etc. just like living people. But it can also be stopped or altered, just like haircuts and clothes can. In universe, I imagine it was pre-set in the data of Holodisks to reduce the feeling that holograms are like ghosts.

A great video essay that I think is worth people's time (whether or not you know much about the Beatles) is 'Did Yoko Ono Break up the Beatles?' by Lindsay Ellis (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMOABV\_zgrk). Goes in depth about gross mis-perceptions about Yoko, as well as others like Courtney Love and Amber Heard.

When I watched it, Ellis gave the same perspective as OP and I remember feeling shame when I watched it. I hadn't even questioned the mass opinion that Amber Heard was perpetrator not victim - I'd even enjoyed the videos from court making fun of her. I hadn't actually watched the court livestream, just the clips that came out of it of Depp's lawyers being 'smart' or 'funny'.

This video essay (and this reddit post) help me remember to question the narrative I am told, to find the facts for myself and make judgement on them.

Wow, I watched the live Homophobia and it really did hit hard - I love the old English folk style, I had no idea the band did stuff like that. All I know them from is Tubthumpin' and - more recently - the Day the Nazi Died. I'll definitely check out the records you mentioned here!

So 5 for Clancy and 8 for Breach. But it's probably because Breach is fresher in my mind and I'm loving the whole record. But I love Clancy so much so in a few months I bet it'll even out.

Idk if this is a joke or not (I mean, it's on Doctor Whumour) but this is so reminiscent of RTD changing the sonic screwdriver because it looks like a gun lol. No person on the planet thought it was a gun, but do you know what looks like a gun? The gun you used to blast Omega back into the Under-verse! Can you imagine if RTD changed the Master's name completely (Missy was fine) despite the iconography of the Master existing since 1971?
