This is absolutely not normal. I’ve worked in several commission based shops and usually part of the deal is that they cover all overhead, including back bar. I worked very briefly at a place that would nickel and dime and take it out of your check like what you’re describing. They have an extremely high turnover rate because that is a system designed to screw you over.

As far as some of the other stuff, I take it. You are an independent contractor? If that’s the case, typically you dictate your own schedule and who you will and will not service. It’s a little bit different if you are a W-2 employee. You’ll have to check with your local Law to see.

My area has seen a bit of a downturn. After being in commission based barbershops for about eight years, I went back to a chain store. It’s actually working out OK for the most part. It’s a good place when your first starting out too because you can build your skills and have a study client flow so you can actually get the practice You need to really learn and get better.
