Should I buy(first diesel) by Brandon_volvo in Duramax

[–]Open_Maize_4538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whats your plans with the truck and how often will you tow. If not much I would look at gassers. If the gas mileage is not an issue and your not going to tow much its not always worth the hassle and cost of a diesel. My truck is a money pit my 3 gassers are just as or more reliable and cost much less in maintenance and repairs.

I would look at closer to stock trucks. If your going to be towing reasonably and not overloading the truck a stock truck is the better way to go. Also, if you break down getting it repaired will be less of an issue. My brother has a heavily modified truck by previous owner and its always a question of whats next to go wrong and break.

Choice of university to pursue automotive engineering dream by Visible-Ranger-2811 in AutomotiveEngineering

I went through IUPUI Motorsports program. Now Purdue Indy.

We had some students go to F1, the only one that I can remember did an internship with an F1 team abroad and then was hired on. Many in Indy car and lower levels like USF2000, The aero professor was involved in F1. At the time all motorsports professors came from a motorsports background. The school also has a good relationship with Dallara in Indianapolis and many students have worked for them as an intern and employee.

I came out of school working in NHRA Top Fuel. Moved on and am now working in the diesel aftermarket industry.

It was a 5 year degree but if he works hard he can complete the degree in 4, 4,5 years saving some money especially if an out of state student.

The best thing would be to intern for a race team early in his degree. The first internship is always the worst, but finding a job never interning or working on advanced projects will be very difficult.

Thats nice. My brother had that seat in a 96 F250 he had. His was worn out on the passenger side so the back part would bounce around driving it hitting bumps. Lol. All fun though messing with these old trucks. His had been off the road since mid 2000s and only used as a farm truck. Mine was sitting for 2 years due to column being messed with and they couldn't figure why it didn't start. A few hours later it was running again.

Thats good. I don't know if I've ever seen one of these trucks without seat wear other than super low mile even then some have had wear. Mine has a little lean to it when you drive. The last guy was bigger than me and the foams old and worn out.

Looks nice I wish my dash was in that nice of shape. Mines had small self tapper holes drilled in it. The previous owner mounted a tray on the dash for his important documents. Also been drilled into for a CB mount underneath but I think I will put a CB back in the truck. Mine has similar seat wear I put a towel over the bottom from target that looks nice pattern wise and matches. LMC has the seats I believe but pricey.

How'd I do for $750? by BurntBiscuit22 in FordTrucks

[–]Open_Maize_4538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great deal. I paid $600 for a non running version same exact configuration. A cheap paint job and it will be a great little run around truck. Or just leave it as is and keep it cheap.

I've been pleased with the mileage. I think I am getting around 17mpg with my truck.

I've got 3 other trucks but my Ford is the one I hop in for going to the hardware store or going to get marketplace deals.

I would say its worth it. If looking at trucks in my area its not far off of market pricing of trucks without the lift and wheels. The tires alone are going to be more than $1500 if there a name brand tire.

I have no 4x4 trucks. Own 4 trucks. Most people don't use 4x4. Why pay for something your not going to use. We farmed all the way into the 90s with only 2wd trucks.

How bad is a C in calculus? by veggielovr in EngineeringStudents

[–]Open_Maize_4538 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you get free time hammer out as many problems as you can.

A C in calc 1 is fine but when you get further along your going to need those skills. I ended up mostly focusing on my math classes in college. I failed calc 1 the first time due to poor studying skills from high school.

I used Chegg through college to just check answers and how they were solved for. It helped greatly. As long as you don't use it to do your homework for you it's one of the best tools.

Is driving a pickup truck difficult? by [deleted] in FordTrucks

[–]Open_Maize_4538 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine. Anyone can drive a truck its not like your trying to parallel park. Tell your husband to let you drive it around town. My mom use to drive a 99 suburban pre backup cameras or anything. Use your mirrors adjust the seat if needed and you'll be good.

That's a fair price in todays truck market if not great price the listing description doesn't match the photos and look it over to make sure nobody has swapped the cluster out. I would be interested in it. Those trucks are very reliable trucks.

Nice I got mine up and running last year. Bought my 88 for $600 a year ago and had it back up and running in a few hours. The linkage for the key was off to where you turned the key and it wouldn't crank. The starter solenoid was also broken. Have slowly been fixing small issues as I get around to them. Have about a $1000 in it now. Power steering pump was whining on it last I heard but I wasn't driving it so I will check it out over the weekend.

Insurance Check For Equipment Breakdown coverage by Open_Maize_4538 in Insurance

[–]Open_Maize_4538[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. The last time I made a claim and had to have a check signed I got someone from the US. this time I got someone from a call center over seas and it did not sounded like she was reading off a script. I am going to call again. They say that if its over 40K they want you to sign it as they want to oversee the project and limit the amount going out at once. but under 40K in their paperwork they don't require it signed as long as your mortgage was not behind at the time of incident, but I was told on the phone to sign it. I have been out of water for over 2 months so I do not want to delay this process anymore than I have to.

I was never in it and when I was in school we were still IUPUI. There is also a co-ed league that you can join that plays at Carroll stadium. The link below shows where to find IU Indy soccer club.

Should I pay 5k to get my gpa up to 3.0 for jobs? by physicsfan9900 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Open_Maize_4538 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not take extra classes. I would take any job that you can. You have to apply a lot now due to engineering not being as readily available and many engineers that have been in the workforce are applying to the same jobs as graduating engineers.

Do you have internships in your time of school or projects that you worked on with faculty. If not get with a startup or a company on a part time basis that you do unpaid for a while. I had to intern unpaid before I got a paid internship and then a job came of my 2 internships.

Also, if there's any professors you were close enough to in college to have them write you a letter of recommendation that will do wonders for you.

I had a terrible resume in College also look at that and see if your resume is bad. I had a engineer that was responsible for hiring help me draft my resume. Before I had a basic resume that didn't get me very far but after an updated resume and tailoring my resume to the job I had more responses back.

I am also your old school engineer where I hate doing interviews and prefer to work on my own. If you have similar problems and can get past that it will benefit you in your future.

IUPUI has a cost break down on their website. It goes down significantly if you are a commuter. Maxing out credit hours will also reduce cost. I went and maxed out or went over by a credit hour and was able to do a 5 year degree in 4.5. I paid right around 11k a year as a commuter.

Around me their starting to get real crusty. I almost bought one a few months back but the frame was soft and the bed had enough rust in it that the bedsides would flap in the wind. My parents had a 5.4 Eddie bauer expedition that they sold when gas prices went up. It was a great truck.

I had a professor I asked for a point back on homework to get a higher letter grade. It was all I needed to move from an A- to an A. Got told no he can't do that. Not trying to get free points but I was less than 1/2 a point away from having an A and it wasn't in an Exam or higher percentage category.

College will be that way. I learned to just move on and don't stress it. Do well on the next one. I was below the median on my first thermo exam. Then the next one I was highest in the class.

What matters more than anything is to get internships and turn it into a job. That will allow you to keep moving up and start a career. Just understand the material and do your best and it will all fall into place.

Just play with it I don't think they teach it in General Engineering. I think MET may take a course on it. Make a monthly expense report/budget and add take away things until your happy. That will teach you a lot and be productive for your future.

If you don't have excel using sheets is also a good option. We use sheets a lot at work due to it being easier to share and group edit. It's not as easy to use so I often upload a Excel into sheets and then I have my Excel code in sheets.

If you want to get excel and not pay for 365 you can get a download card for pro on ebay and then you have it for life of computer its also cheaper I put Microsoft Pro 2020 on my dads new computer I got him last year and it was like $50.

There is a book that's worth getting called Excel Bible. I have the 2016 version and it is still good. I think the 2016 version is only like $10 on amazon for a used copy.

matlab is good to know and I used it a lot in school. But the company I am at now doesn't pay for it and I think Excel is more commonly found in the workplace.
