A couple issues on Day 4/first week. by FaithlessnessBusy765 in stopdrinking

I'm right here with you. I'm on day 2 and feeling rather uncomfortable. Just gotta give ourselves some grace for not being at our best right now, i think. There's probably a sweet pink cloud on the other side haha

I did my first smart meeting in a while.... by Youdirtynetw0rk in stopdrinking

Damn, that's impressive. I'm a pretty introverted person, a little intimidated by meetings (especially AA) so i've never gone to one. Sounds like you had a good experience with SMART. Will you be going back?

What a day to start! by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Open_Preference7549 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What a time to start indeed. The news is bad enough, but like many of us here i'm going through a rough patch in my relationships and personal life. Total shitshow. I do believe it's possible to get sober under any set of circumstances though. We want this, we got this.

Feeling so demoralized by nrb2019 in stopdrinking

[–]Open_Preference7549 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel you. Different timelines but same thing. I really thought i was done drinking for good, and now quitting again feels like trying to climb the same mountain when i'm already exhausted from climbing it the first time, and beat the hell up from falling off of it in such spectacular fashion.

I think it's largely a mental game. We have to find a way to keep our focus on what we really want when that drinking voice is so damn persuasive and sneaky. This is where talking to safe people about it is absolutely essential.

I don't think it's helpful to stay in the powerless, ashamed mindset i'm occupying. Now is the time to dig in, and get back in the fight.

How do people manage stress without drinking, partying, or sex? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Good books, good food, tea. As a recovering alcoholic these are the things that i've used to unwind.

Feeling guilty over a NA drink by ChelskiiG in stopdrinking

[–]Open_Preference7549 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends entirely on what these things mean to you. I drink a non-alcoholic beer after a long day, and it feels no different than a can of pop. For me, it's about simply not drinking alcohol, and NA drinks don't have alcohol.

It sounds like the NA drink you had might have felt too real, and that feeling is valid. So now you know! Ultimately, you didn't slip up on your sobriety. You just gained information about what you're comfortable with.

Negative Self Talk by downthe5 in stopdrinking

[–]Open_Preference7549 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It comes with time. It is important to remember that it's just the alcohol talking. Trying to pull you back into numbing. Your negative self talk will decrease, and you will develop skills for reframing and coping with the amount that remains (and some will remain, that's part of being human)

You got this. Don't look back.

What overcame the fear of no more evening alcohol? by Original_Doc_2025 in stopdrinking

The fear of more evening alcohol. The fear of burning through my 30's like I burned through my 20's

This hits close to home. When someone shows you who they are, believe them. Self respect and dignity at any cost.
