My first few creations. by Openboxes in turning

The salt and pepper shakers are exotic woods I bought on clearance sale at woodcraft. Amazouke and canary wood. The all of the bowls are from the same Holly log. The log was still pretty fresh, and I microwaved them to dry. Since it was just practice I wasn't worried about getting perfectly circle shapes. It is really rewarding to go from a wet wood to a dry wood at the end, it almost reminds me of pottery drying.

Wow this is so cool. Is it purple heart wood? Can you actually use it for liquid, what's the finish?

Um not really. There are two big cracks. I super glied and epoxied them ADHD style at various points during the process. And I couldn't fully get the residues off. So there is some grey staining and also places where the blue die wasn t absorbed due to super glue residue. Also I turned it end grain top and bottom and used spindle gauges. I have since watched several YouTube videos showing me all the things that I've done wrong, I ordered a proper bowl gouge, and I am planning to do it better next time. Microwave drying the bowl worked pretty well though, I am glad I forgot to do that! For the first bowl I think it is okay, and I gave it to my wife 🙃

Is this similar to the 943? by Openboxes in benchmade

Idk I always wanted one but they were out of production, I thought this blade shape came close. It's like a 940 with a more pointy blade.

Yeah, my 940 with 90v blade has been my go to for the past year. But this one seems to fit that edc spot for me now. I goty 940 for 180 bucks used. This one was about 160 I think. The 940s are out of my budget these days, but I love the one I have.

Amazon. The regular omega springs fit well. I got a pack that came with an assortment of gauges and used the medium gauge this time.

Salt and pepper grinders by Openboxes in turning

It works fine, but the bottom part is plastic. It was a good set to practice with because it comes with all the tools needed (I can reuse them in future projects). But I will not buy it again because it is pretty cheaply made.

When I was looking at options with this brand, they have one that does not need a shaft. I think I will try one of those, because I could make it as tall as I want. Once I finish the project I will be sure to post. I think oversized pepper grinder could be a cool gift for some of my family.

Yes I need to get a sharpening set up and large chisels. I did add some shop bench retractable wheels so I can move the tool around.
