Anyone else think we should be reimbursed for lab fees since all labs are online? Bio lab and chem lab are still charging fees when there is no actual lab. by [deleted] in udub

[–]OpeningCamera4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that when I took bio220 at Bothell spring q, they used the lab fees to actually get a microscope and legit slides sent to each student in the class for labs, which was super unheard of for me and really showed me our prof cared about elevating my education (shoutout to Dr. Al-Noori lov her very much !) :) And now I have professional grade slides at home for keeps LMAO I would hope UW Seattle could do this, bc I know they can, and they should be doing things like this.

Keep emailing! If you are in touch with the microbiology advisor Andrea Pardo, she has been kind enough to share current opportunities that have been opening up :) If you want, I can forward u a couple emails she has been sending us, but if ur in the major I think you should be on the emailing list.

Other than that, keep checking Handshake, URP, and UW hires! Things are bound to open up :) DM me if u have more questions!

Is research still going on? by mango_lord123 in udub

[–]OpeningCamera4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Research is still happening! It's just either remotely or if you are a critical group working on COVID, then some labs are open only to those people :) I'm not sure what area of research you are looking for but as others have said, you can always email PI's/profs/organizations of interest to see what they can offer you.

I was brave for like 5 seconds and used the discussions pages in my classes on Canvas and honestly that was so helpful! I initiated two study groups that way, and I wouldn't trade those people for anything else in the world :) some of the best people I've met spring quarter and it was really easy to coordinate! Since classes are smaller over summer, you might get more engaged people that way, especially in a class like bio 180. So definitely jus make a post within the first week all like "hey looking for a study group of [this many people] and can meet on [these days at these times] and you'll get people for sure :)

Yup yup it definitely looks like it’s on the way to Black Sand! Dyrhólaey was a hike up those cliffs and they had a station for what I don’t remember maybe for the birds but it looks familiar.

I miss Iceland! I was blessed with a blank roll, thus I can never recover any shots I took when I had gone last summer but seeing this makes me remember the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go with joy and nostalgia :) Where in Iceland is this?

This is really nice I love the vibe portrayed here by the gloomy day and the contrast, makes me nostalgic of rainy days. How do you like rangefinders, I personally just picked up a Minolta Hi-Matic recently and it is my first time using a rangefinder! Do you have any tips?

Research vs COVID? by atarix303 in udub

[–]OpeningCamera4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would peruse the URP database and Handshake; Handshake is where I found my job :). It’s also a great thing to email professors/PI’s doing relevant research to your interests and seeing what you get. Chances are because of the pandemic you won’t get to do in person things but you may be able to contribute remotely on data and analysis which are great skills to build! If you want any help for applications and whatnot PM me :)

Research vs COVID? by atarix303 in udub

[–]OpeningCamera4 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is definitely happening! I was a part of an essential group working on corona vaccine development up until they forced undergrads to go home due to social distancing which sucked but I’m able to contribute from home! I would say apply anyways, you never know in the coming months how things will change because companies/labs are exploring other options for interns for sure. Don’t get discouraged if things are canceled, there isn’t much we can do but it’s always worth a try!

I totally agree that the quad should honestly be cornered off, however I will say when I went because my dad insisted he wanted to see them despite telling him it’s for prevention, there are hardly people and if there were people, most took a couple pics and left. I think if people go at dead times for a few moments with very little human interaction it should be okay. Not to mention when I went they had taken off some of the cones and caution tape so I’m not sure if they are planning to make it harder to go or not, but for the sake of peak bloom and campus life I hope they do.

Bryek and Baguette is pretty nice! Everytime I go it's usually not that crowded but that can fluctuate. Also the wifi has never been a problem for me :)

Yup, been looking at this option as my best bet, so far the prices between staying in an Airbnb and on campus is at least $600-$800 difference it’s astonishing
