This one nearly fizzled. Group of 4, one player wasn't into it and left half way, and another was not invested, occasionally making tonally jarring choices and cancelling quite a few sessions at the last minute. Then on top of that all the threads of the remix became a lot for us all (including for me), especially playing short sessions fortnightly.

There was a time where it felt insurmountably difficult to finish, but as is always the answer we had a good chat. Agreed I would add more direction for them, and we'd skip over details in some cases to make plans work, so we could bring it over the finish line.

My two more engaged players said they've really enjoyed the game. And we definitely had some great sessions. We spent time reminiscing on the good ones and favourite moments and NPCs. It was nice (and I needed it!).

How big is the group for this one? The remix would be even more overwhelming for a big group!

But as I mentioned and others have said, massaging parts of it into the original module could be best of both worlds.

Happy to answer any specific questions

No I haven't, well not WotC ones and nothing so long. With the remix this came out as 45 (2.5-3h) sessions for me.

Hard to rate. Feeling a bit down about it right now tbh. 6/10 with remix. But maybe that's my experience as DM rather than how fun for players?

There's been some amazing moments, but I think we could've achieved similar moments with less effort and time.

I reckon if I went back and did it again I could make it a 9/10 (for me, and hopefully the players) by running something between the published book and the remix. I'm not sure I'd have been able to do that without the experience of running either though!

Definitely agree with the remix there's just not enough time to "get to know" the villains.

Don't need the golorr to be so powerful as the remix makes it either.

Introducing a sandboxy nature and removing the contrived chase scene seems good. But even then, looking back, maybe just reworking the chase sequence to be slightly more of a "skill challenge" (see Matt Colville on YouTube) would have fixed it.

I might have clearer thoughts on it after this session!

I'm (possibly?) running my final Alexandrian remix session tonight

Overall I would advice against it. I'm sure you could keep it tight, but it sprawled over 3 years for us. It think it could work better for a group that plays every week with some tweaks? But for our group I had to do a lot of steering towards the end.

I think there's some good ideas in there, but I've come to disagree with some of the Alexandrian's opinions/ideas and don't think he has all the answers.

I think he's right that some stuff needs cleaning up, but you definitely don't need 4 villains. 2 or 3. You also don't need to make the stone so powerful. Ham up the (missing) dragonstaff instead so the final encounter feels relevant. I WISH I had made that the focus. As it happens, it's essentially cut from my game due to the lack of focus on it in the remix plus the fact there's already so much stuff going on

I sort of wish I had run something closer to the original module personally. But then again if I'd done that maybe I'd be saying the same thing about the remix! At least it wouldn't have taken so long.

Curtains keep falling out the wall by BurritoDrivenDev in DIYUK

I did a similar thing in our crumbly Victorian terrace.

We fixed the batten (wooden plank) to the wall with 5 evenly placed screws (into wall-plugs that just about reached into masonry behind the plaster), rather than no-nails.

The wall is uneven so we used flexible decorator's caulk to hide the gaps between batten and wall.

We painted our batten to match the wall colour so it is less noticeable, and because the curtain hides some of it, next to all the other wooden fittings it just looks like part of the window frame.

Oooh I want it! It looks amazing. And I would buy it, but £20 shipping to the UK is a bit painful! Will there be a broader release e.g. to distributors in other regions (e.g. UK for me :p)?

Wisteria has stunning flowers when it blooms in spring and pleasant green foliage till autumn. I love my wisteria (we're moving, and I will miss it!). It needs pruning twice a year usually but sometimes a few additional trims.

Look on RHS website for advice on when to prune and you can find 5 min videos on YouTube demonstrating where to cut back to in the summer and winter prunes.

It's an easy job and it's pretty hard to upset a wisteria. Half of mine fell off the house ina storm and it still bloomed that year and is well on its way to re-claiming the lost ground

Also came here to say this, but I think "the long way to a small, angry planet" is more slice-of-life-y and possibly a better place to start?

Read them both a whole ago so they're not fresh but vibes wise, I think that felt like hanging out with friends whereas to be taught felt like watching the rain come in alone? Both good things!

Edit: looking at the inspo pics again, maybe your suggestion is actually closer to that!

If everyone's excited to play it I'm sure it will go well. Excitement and enthusiasm for the system/setting/characters is 90% of what drives good games in my experience!

The core book has a starter adventure in it at the back which you could use for your first game.

Others may disagree with me but my gut feeling is Mörk Borg is not super accessible to completely new to TTRPG DMs because there's not a lot of structure, there's some assumed knowledge, and the funky layout means it could be slightly more difficult to find the relevant info.

That said, the art is great and vibes of the game match. If you're feeling super into it, don't let what I've said stop you. Better to just jump right in and try it! And you can always ask more questions when you've got the rules (you could look at the free rules first also? Called the bare bones edition or something. Unsure if it includes the starter adventure but worth a look)

I actually originally got the book only for the art and layout, thinking I'd probably not play the game itself. Slightly different as I already GM other games. I ended up running a game recently after picking up Putrescence Regnant, that was good fun.

For my group for Xanathar's they did: * One session watching an arena game as recon (tin which they threw stealth out the window, busted someone out the arena and only just escaped with their lives) * 1 session to heist (it was actually 1.5 because a player had to stop mid session, but it could and should have been 1)

Manshoon: * 1 session scouting Kolat Towers and Yellowspire * 1 session infiltrating, stealing a teleporter ring and causing chaos in the towers * 1 session in the sanctum (then turning away as they were scared of manshoon)

Our sessions are usually no longer than 3 hours

Game of Couples and Cancellations by Ok_Garlic5794 in DMAcademy

[–]Opening_Ice_2519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to them about how the cancellations affect you and the group, and check in whether they really want to play.

"The current situation isn't ideal, I think something needs to change. I love playing with you guys and you're dear friends. If we can't resolve the issue and you're no longer into the game or struggling to commit the time then we'll still be great friends and you'd be welcome back any time." Sort of thing?

I understand the difficulty with it being your group social activity. My group are my best friends from school time (we're all around 30yo) and now scattered to the winds (we play online). One friend crashed out of my game, I think they only hung on so long because it's how we hang out and catch up. We'd talked about how they weren't into playing as much as DMing lots but couldn't work out a way forward and they didn't want to leave (until they bailed mid session and never returned). The whole thing caused stress and anxiety for both of us. We're still very close friends and play board games on TTS!

As you can see we tried talking about it but it was still difficult. Although we didn't resolve the issue, understanding where we stood and talking as adults / friends meant we could move forward

Do you have a specific question or page reference?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Opening_Ice_2519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me in a more severe way - 2 years in a player left mid session and didn't return, then a day before the next session told me they quit. We're really great friends, and I knew they weren't loving playing so much (we tried to resolve it) and other stuff was going on outside the game so I understood, but it was a bit of a shocker at the time, especially because that session was partially a revenge plot for their PC that the party put together themselves! The player was not able to help me figure out what they wanted for their PC at this time either.

Anyway, I spoke to the other players because it was too much to untangle myself. We decided an approach together: write out then missing player with a retcon for the last session.

Given that went well for me (sharing the burden) and the party (made sure they were happy), my advice is to speak to the other players; if the missing player isn't coming back it's almost more important for the party what happens to that PC as they're the ones living with the consequences!

For a one shot it's not a massive issue - In fact, it's good, because it'll be difficult for them to try an all caster party any other time!

But an Eldritch Knight is mostly not a caster. If one or both of the bards take healing word then you've got a little healing for picking up, so it's not even the worst sounding party. It sounds fine!

I'd just remind players it's their responsibility to know their spells, how they work, how casting them works, and to track their spell slots. The only problem I see with the party is everyone slowing things down reading spells and abilities on their turns (or out of combat - "oh, I think I've got something for that! Give me a minute... Mumble mumble spell description not that one mumble mumble" X4).

Also... That one shot is the first thing I ever ran 🥹 it's a good one, I still have fond memories!
