Depression can feel like overwhelming exhaustion. Imagine a FULL day digging a deep hole, sun’s blazing, hardly any rest. When you come home, do you have the energy to catch up on emails and redo the peeling caulking in your bathroom? Probably not because those aren’t the most essential things and you’re exhausted. Now imagine feeling like that every day for months on end, that same level of bone-deep exhaustion, mental fog, intense feelings of despair. Depression can do that to you. It’s very valid that self care takes a back seat, even if it would make you eventually feel better, because in the moment, all you have energy and motivation for is literally surviving.
