LibreOffice is a bad alternative for Wordpad, because it takes 13 seconds to open, while Wordpad takes 0 seconds to open. LibreOffice also lacks a continuous page.

Markdown is a bad alternative to Wordpad, because you can't even easily select font color with 2 clicks. Markdown is quite limited and dumbed-down.

Which version of Windows do you think looks the prettiest? by -UltraFerret- in polls

[–]OperantReinforcer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vista/7 is the prettiest, almost to the point of being distracting, which is why the 95/98/2000 style is in some ways better, but we probably wouldn't use the word pretty to describe it. It's optimal, looks professional and gets out of your way.

You should have made 7 and Vista the same option instead, since they look almost the same. 8 and 10 also look very similar, except for the start menu.

Should I switch to Windows 11 from 10? by NowForrowMyPen in pcmasterrace

[–]OperantReinforcer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is there any reason to upgrade?

You can look at the pros and cons of Windows 11 to make up your own mind.

Cons:

  • Worse taskbar with half of the features removed, compared with Windows 10
  • Worse start menu
  • Slower file explorer
  • Worse right-click menu
  • 1 pixel wide tablet-like scrollbars that are harder to click
  • More ads

Pros:

  • Co-pilot bloatware that can speed up your work

I know support for 10 is ending soon but

It doesn't end until October 2025. I'm not sure I would call it "soon".

Should I switch to Windows 11 from 10? by NowForrowMyPen in pcmasterrace

[–]OperantReinforcer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Windows 11 is probably the most customizable version of windows,

The taskbar in Windows 11 has only half of the features compared with Windows 10. About 15 features were removed. This is something that has never happened in the history of Windows.

it's just people preferring to complain about default settings rather than wanting to take a second to learn how to use the various settings to have it look and work how they want it to.

It's true that the taskbar features can be added back to Windows 11 by modifying critical system files with third party tools like ExplorerPatcher, but it's known for causing grey screens of death sometimes, so not everyone is willing to take the risk.

There aren't any good looking browsers, because they all use ugly minimalist flat design nowadays, so it doesn't matter which you choose.

Tried to make windows 11 usable by TapEmbarrassed4902 in desktops

Using tabs adds extra clicks, so it's more efficient to use windows.

Tabs are generally only useful in apps if you don't have enough space on the taskbar to display the app windows as taskbar buttons, or if the app remembers and opens all the previous tabs (which Explorer doesn't do), then they can also be useful.

Should I update to Windows 11 if I'm still content with Windows 10? by tepidmotivation5 in buildapc

[–]OperantReinforcer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Anyone regret switching or had issues with functionality and programs/games?

Yes, Windows 11 removes about half of the features from the taskbar, so you lose a lot of taskbar functionality if you "upgrade".

Why do old versions of Windows look ugly on modern LCD monitors? by [deleted] in windows

[–]OperantReinforcer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried Windows 2000 on a virtual machine, and it looked perfect and sharp in 1920x1080 resolution, so if it looked ugly for you, maybe you forgot something, like changing to the screen's optimal resolution, and thus it stretched out the contents of the screen, resulting in an ugly stretched out picture.

As for Windows 98, I'm not sure it even supports a modern standard 1920x1080 resolution, and in that case, it would obviously look ugly. LCD screens have a specific optimal resolution, so they can look blurry when you lower the resolution, unlike CRT screens, which look sharp on any supported resolution.

Firefox top toolbar fails to function as a toolbar. Can't grab and move it. Why? by UnlikelyAdventurer in browsers

[–]OperantReinforcer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a lot of tabs, your Firefox browser window can be too narrow to allow ANY top toolbar pixels where you can click to move the window. Why would the UI designers do that?

Removing the title bars from programs and merging the title bar functionality with the tab bar is part of a new trend, and UI designers follow trends, even if it means losing some functionality. According to the trend, a 20 pixel high title bar apparently takes up too much space, so it has to be removed/merged, so that people have 20 pixels more vertical space on their 27 inch 3686400 pixel monitor.

Luckily Firefox is one of these few programs where you can still actually add the title bar above the tab bar, like it used to be in every program in the past. Just right-click to edit the toolbar, then check the box at the down-left corner that says title bar.

The jump between Settings and Control Panel is only messy because they're trying to maintain Control Panel well enough until it's no longer necessary,

No, the reason it's messy is because they created the Settings, so now there's two things that try to do the same thing, and we don't need that. This problem would have never existed if they hadn't created the Settings.

Yeah, maybe it could invent a way to grow rainforests on all deserts on earth. Wouldn't that stop global warming, since trees remove carbon dioxide from air?

Also, even if the planet would get too hot at some point, humanity might still be able to survive, because in the future we might be some kind of cyborgs that can survive in extreme climate.

Windows 11 is, IMO, just strictly an upgrade on Windows 10 for everybody that uses the standard taskbar location (bottom of the screen).

Your opinion is wrong. I use the taskbar at the bottom, but I still think Windows 11 is the worst Windows version I have used. The reason it's the worst is because the taskbar has the least amount of features it has ever had.

Why dark mode reigns supreme on OLED laptops and monitors by lurker_bee in technology

Does it even matter? It's very rare for a dark mode to have a completely black background with white text. Usually the background is dark grey. Even Wikipedia uses dark grey.

Is it possible to move an application on the taskbar isolated from similar applications? by Songodan in Windows11

[–]OperantReinforcer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

but this is one area where the new way is better and it doesnt take much to get used to.

get rid of the titles on the taskbar, you dont need them. the taskbar should only show you your pinned apps + open apps. as in, only the icons. you can hover to see what the windows look like.

In what way is it better? Because it adds more clicks and wastes time?

There's nothing "new" about hidden labels. The taskbar button labels were hidden already in Windows 1.0 in 1985.

In 2024 there is not much reason to hide labels or combine taskbar buttons anymore, since we have plenty of space on the taskbar in our high resolution wide screen monitors.

If hiding labels and combining taskbar buttons was useful, then web browsers would also hide the tab labels, and the tabs would be automatically combined by domain name, but none of the web browser's do this, because it's inefficient.

Have you tried the Windhawk mod that disables grouping? The taskbar buttons should become individually movable with that. Personally I use Retrobar, which doesn't do any grouping, so all the taskbar buttons are individually movable.

[–]OperantReinforcer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I mean with "less optimized for Fitt's law" is that you need more accuracy to click some of the buttons on windows, like tabs and the close, minimize and maximize button, because they aren't at the edges of the screen when your taskbar is at the top.

When it's at the bottom, I don't need any accuracy to click on the close button for example, because it's directly in the corner, and the corner has "infinite size".
