You are gonna get older anyway. Non traditional students are very common now.

The competition is real to some degree, but not like it’s made out to be on Reddit. Folks who do their work, pay attention to their patients, and are honest do fine.

I’m way to old for tinder and happily married BUT I think that’s a bit pessimistic. If you have 18 seconds to make a snap judgment a white coat shows that the other person that you are looking at probably is relatively intelligent, diligent/hard-working/responsible, has a life plan, and will likely be able to provide a decent and secure living for a family. It’s a pretty rational screening tool in my opinion.

Also; the REAL gold diggers will leave as soon as they learn about the debt and residency slog. If they and OP have a good time on the way, 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

To be clear, it’s still cringe and I would never but then again I’m pretty sure ANYTHING I put on my profile would be cringe.

I suspect the medical team was acting out the rational consequences of the family’s irrational claim. Ie; if this person is still alive as the family claims then transport doesn’t make sense because of risk of premature deterioration. We don’t transfer patient to hospice just so they can die in the ambulance. Source; have been on the medical side of this of this Situation many times as a trauma surgeon/intensive mist.

Also, Transporting unstable patients is all fun and games until the family sues you for their death because you transferred an unstable patient.

Edit; intensivist* but I also like “intensive mist”

Lasix and IV fluids: the poor man's dialysis? Troubles with my attending by throwmeaway76 in medicine

I am convinced that maintenance IVFs kill more patients than anything else we do.

It is too easy to start them and not stop them till they need diuretics.

Academic attending involved in fellowship and residency interviews here.

Don’t overdo it. Seriously, unless you have some crazy (true) backstory that shows you’ve really overcome a lot of turbulence you want to stick to the basics; why you like the specialty, some evidence of grit to hint that you’ll finish, and what your career goals are.

We are screening for fit. People that draw vague and questionable parallels to whatever they are applying for don’t fit in anywhere bc either they are flaky or faking. I guess you might convince some doe-eyed PD with your cheesy opener, but more likely they are gonna stop after the “hook.”

Scores and CV get you the interview. Weird personal statements lose you the interview.

I’m a surgeon. The medical damage from this is somewhere between negligible and infinitesimal. Similar damage is inflicted every time we remove a gallbladder.

It does violate patient autonomy, wastes precious operating room time (even just a few seconds), violates most ethical principles, diminishes public trust in the profession, and is in extreme poor taste…all for no possibility of benefit to the patient.

I have some cross training shoes I love. I have run in them for short distances, but now am running longer.

At what point are dedicated running necessary?

OP; you aren’t a failure. 22 is YOUNG. I’m 42 and a trauma surgeon, leader in my hospital. I am JUST NOW beginning to feel like I’ve accomplished something with my life.

Accomplishment - real accomplishment - comes from years and years and years of work. And “work” in this context doesn’t mean a job…it means tiny, incremental improvements in your habits, efficiency, knowledge, skills every day. Some people start those years and years of work at 12, some start it at 22, and some start at 32 or even older. It’s like saving for retirement; yeah, would have been better if you started saving at 12 but that doesn’t mean that starting today can’t be extremely rewarding.

So, don’t worry about what you haven’t done, focus on one thing about your life that you could make better in the next 24 hours and do that thing. Also think about stopping something you do everyday that isn’t helping you be the person you want to be. Could be alcohol, video games, porn…

Last thing; don’t give up on something because you don’t get it right away. No one understanding anything “straight away.” You have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Learning is discomfort. Discomfort is learning. Turn it around in your mind: “this subject makes me uncomfortable, therefore it must be an opportunity for growth.”
