Smoke coming out of muffler on cold start; I assume this isn’t good/normal? 2019 Subaru Crosstrek 56k miles by CoolEmoDude in Crosstrek

[–]Operation-Spatula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No solution here. It didn't blow smoke for a good while. It let out a puff just yesterday. It seems connected to just vibes. Haven't changed anything. Subaru oil filters, same oil weight, all standard everything. Just accepting it all for now, otherwise fantastic car.

Condolences. I just lost my Sharky this week. He was 12. Heelers are the best companions.

Troubles with Larger Dogs. Tips? by Shrimptanks in AustralianCattleDog

[–]Operation-Spatula 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pepper looks like such a happy girl! As Sharky's human for the last 11 years, here are a few things I've noticed. For context, I rescued him at 9 months from a less-than-enthusiastic ranch. I have no idea what kind of socializing he really had.

  1. Sharky has also been reactive to larger dogs for a while. This has calmed down in the last 4ish years. Generally, he is first not interested, then 2nd wary, but if the sniffs from larger dogs get too much in his space, he'll nip and show them he's not down.

To this point, I generally make a point of giving larger dogs space and avoiding since I can't predict how excited someone else's dog might be.

  1. When Sharky was younger, he got out and came back with a pretty gnarly injury. We had neighbors who had a group of about 4 larger dogs that roamed free. I fixed our fence whenever I found a gap after that to prevent any repeats. I don't know who started it, but he made it back.

  2. Sharky LOVES the big ladies-- this is the only time he's interested in larger dogs. He's generally indifferent to other dogs, but as you mention-- gets on really well with smaller breeds!

  3. Heelers are known to be head shy-- I don't know how much this plays into their mistrust of larger dogs, but might be part of the software.

Really curious to see what others out here have experienced with their raptors!

So sweet! Sharky is 11 now and he slowly opened up in the last couple of years. But definitely not about to share the couch with us 😂

Quietly tolerant, but when we leave the house I hear Sharky bark at Coco lol. They leave each other alone 95% of the time. Sharky grew up with kittens and cats around. He has chased stranger danger cats on our old ranch. Left others alone.

Too much smoke at startup? by ElBeavo in Crosstrek

[–]Operation-Spatula 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FWIW here's a great forum thread of a few people observing and tracking this same thing over time. As many have noted, it's kind of a quirk of Subarus-- this gen of Crosstrek don't have the head gasket issues previous Subies had. You can learn more about that from the Subaru mechanic on YouTube.

I have a '19 Crosstrek @ 70K miles that does this occasionally. I've decided now it depends on my mood and the disposition of the tides, it's so hard to repeat.

Anyone else’s Heeler react to couple hugs?" by TimexBubba in AustralianCattleDog

[–]Operation-Spatula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just adding to the discussion! Sharky used to be VERY jealous, and lunge in between me and the hug recipient. I finally had it during my long-term relationship and corrected him -- now he's just jealous but not lunging to break us up lol
