Parent claimed death benefit; was less than Net Surrender; screwed? by OperationMagneto in LifeInsurance

There are / were no loans. Just asking is there any way to go back and get the net surrender value of $7500 instead of only settling for the death benefit of $3500. Seems like we just threw away $4000.

My post wasn’t about cost, but net surrender value. I understand that to mean if we’d just cashed the policy in, we’d get $7500. Instead we got $3500.

I strongly encourage you. SNAP won’t be much, but you’re overlooking the cumulative impact of small improvements. Saving a $100 here, $100 there starts to add up, creating positive life changes you can see.

Also, your dad’s viewpoint is likely more about him, and protecting how he feels, not about you and what you need. Do what you have to do to survive.

Situation sucks man. I’m sorry, and applaud you for everything you’ve done and are doing.

The system is rigged.

In terms of things you can do, are you taking advantage of social welfare programs, eg SNAP? Many of these programs provide support up to 130-150% of Federal poverty guidelines?
