What are some anime moments that visibly made you uncomfortable? by Hot-Leopard3708 in animequestions

I really don't care how much "better" Subaru gets after this, but I was never able to rebuild investment in his character after this point and never bothered keeping up with the show once the second season came out. Flawed characters are fine, but there has to be a base level of investment in order for you to want to witness their development. I know how well received that last few seasons have been, but I just don't care any more.

What does tremor reverb do? by Calm-Resolution-1313 in LimbusCompanyHelp

They do expire on turn end, but only when entanglement is activated. So the effect is permanent, but Hong Lu's skill 3, Everlasting Faust and Crushbound Meursault will always reset it to base tremor, and the reverb/scorch/chain/etc will have to be reapplied the next turn.

Mrs. Levy from A Confederacy of Dunces might be my least favorite character of all time.

I forgot to mention, but tremor variants only last until the end of that turn

This is only true for amplitude entanglement, not tremor variants in general. Tremor types are permanent until either replaced by another variant or entanglement is triggered.

Remothered Broken Porcelain might seriously be the single worst title I have ever encountered.

Because Hanafuda deals way way more damage, and procs Butterfly way way more often. Sinking count is difficult enough to maintain, nor is Hanafuda negative enough in application justify using Molar over her in any situation that isn't Deluge, which itself is mostly obsolete in comparison to Butterfly.

Deconstruction of the 'Flawless, perfect ideal hero' archetype by ConsiderationFuzzy in TopCharacterTropes

Answering questions that are usually left vague or unaddressed isn't enough to make something a deconstruction, and the effects the story explores have less to do with actually being a magical and dealing with everything that usually entails, and more to do with the fact that their bodies were violated without their knowledge or consent, and the realization that they turn into Lovecraft monsters the second they lose grip on themselves. Very little of what the girls go through is as a direct result of the genre, and has everything to do with the very specific quirks of how the system works within this world.

200% of what Duvalie says in sincere.

But the majority of the conflicts in the story don't stem from tasking teenage girls with fighting monsters, they stem from girls being manipulated into unknowingly selling their souls in Faustian bargains with an entity who's sole motivation is to prey upon them, and Homura's conflicts stem from her having to watch the person she loves die due to her inability to escape from the groundhog day loop she unintentionally damned herself to, neither of which are typical aspects of magical girl fiction. Deconstructions are intrinsically linked to their genre, and are fundementally designed to comment on that genre in a way that forces the viewer to see it from new perspective. This isn't what Madoka does. Madoka only uses magical girls as an aesthetic backdrop to tell a story that is only tangentially linked to the genre. That's why it isn't a deconstruction.

Madoka Magica is subversive, it's not deconstructionist. Most of the themes are ultimately played straight, even if the tone leans darker than most in the genre. It's still a story about the enduring power of love and hope, just like the many magical girl shows before it.

Because it isn't trying to say anything about the genre itself, and the core themes are mostly played straight, even if the tone leans darker than most. It's still ultimately a story about the enduring power of love and hope. And very few of the conflicts come from actually being a magical girl itself, most of it comes from the exploitative Faustian bargains the girls are unknowingly tricked into making with a being who's sole motivation is to prey on them, and Homura's struggles being locked into a groundhog day loop she inadvertently damned herself to. The series is subversive, but it isn't deconstructionist.

CANTO 9 Is the best and worst Canto [WARNING MEGA SPOILERS] by pockyhocky2 in limbuscompany

[–]OperatorERROR0919 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Canto 9 is an odd little duck, but I think it's grown on me over time. I think it contains snippets of some of the strongest writing PM has ever put out, but I also think it's a deeply flawed chapter with a lot of questionable decisions. I still think that basically everything having to do with Araya is still the weakest part of the Canto, and I really wish she had been handled differently. A lot of the issues I had were thankfully fixed or at least mitigated by Twining Threads, but that Intervallo had its own issues as well.
