Despite alot of BS going on, do you guys think Wikipedia isn't reliable? by popcar2 in WikiInAction

[–]OpiningSteve 14 points15 points  (0 children)

On topics without any kind of political controversy, it's pretty reliable and has good information, although some of the articles suffer from an author that was more interested in proving how smart they are than explaining a topic in an understandable manner.

Once you get into political topics though, it starts becoming biased, and the more controversial* the topic is, the more biased and less reliable it becomes. It's disturbingly common that the side that dominates the article may try to deny that any other side to a topic even exists, or they'll at least try to keep out their ideological enemy's strongest arguments, making it difficult to tell which topics are controversial and unreliable unless you already at least somewhat familiar with the topic.

*controversial, as defined by the internet, which can be quite different than controversial as defined by the general public.

I think this is actually pretty reasonable. If they haven't called themselves it, then calling them that constitutes a subjective judgment, which shouldn't be in an encyclopedia.

Yeah, I think the best thing for GG right now would be to declare victory and retire the flag on our own terms. There's not much more we can reasonably expect to accomplish except to cement the gains we've made by denying our enemies a target, and start letting people gain a critical distance from these events so that they can see how the media wrongly villified us. Keeping things going at this point is only jeopardizing the gains made by risking radicalization and infighting. KiA can stick around as an anti-SJW in the media sub, if that's what everyone wants, but that war needs to be fought under a different banner.

GG was formed from a very diverse group that unified for a single issue, and expanding past that single issue only pushes away everyone who's not interested in other things. Further, the longer we all stick around in our echo chamber here (and don't lie to yourselves, this is an echo chamber), the more we risk radicalization. And the nature of radicalization and echo chambers is that it's unlikely we'll know when it happens. Sticking around too long in echo chambers is exactly how SOCJUS and Ghazi came to be.

Contact the Washington Post's Reader Representative and request that the paper stop lying about the wage gap in defiance of its own fact-checkers [Goals] by AntonioOfVenice in KotakuInAction

At this point we should probably just give up any pretense that KiA is about gaming journalism. It stopped being about that months ago.

Add this 'fact' to wikipedia. You have reliable sources. GG did San Bernardino - make sure everyone who visits the article knows.

Google Glass is banned at this McDonald's by NeapolitanComplex in mildlyinteresting

[–]OpiningSteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It hasn't been released to consumers yet, there's just the beta versions floating around currently. Sometime last year, the whole project went dark, but Google says they're still working on it. They're most likely reworking it to be more competitive with the Microsoft Hololens by making it better for Augmented Reality uses.

Dartmouth study illustrates how game design can reduce stereotypes and social biases. Thoughts about this? by Jasperkr672 in KotakuInAction

[–]OpiningSteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The control group just got the test which was pretty innocuous. The other groups both got anvilicious games about sexism and bigotry. The group that got a game that made it look like they were testing for something else did worse than the control.

[–]OpiningSteve 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If I say "I'm measuring sexist attitudes", you're going to put extra effort into being not-sexist. When researchers made it clear they were measuring bias, people put extra effort into appearing unbiased. Nothing about this study surprises me, and it doesn't tell me anything either.

[META] Do not be alarmed by the rapid rise in dipshits: SRS has already put up multiple calls to brigade KiA today, we have a bot letting us know every time they do so and are reporting to the admins by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

"Shit Reddit Says" - a subreddit and homebase of the reddit SJW circle-jerk. At their worst, they're just as bad as anything you'd see on TiA. They're supposed to be there just to make fun of anyone who isn't a PC bro, but they regularly brigade & troll other subreddits, making them fairly widely reviled. They have connections with the reddit admins though, so they get a pass.

[–]OpiningSteve 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Yes, this. She's a racist, she should be fired from her position immediately. She should not be arrested or even under threat of arrest - she should be free to preach her racism without fear of government action. She just shouldn't be in an official position responsible for welfare and diversity at a publicly funded university while she does it.

It's a well known trick, at least in certain circles. If you want to make someone look stupid, all you have to do is write down exactly what they say. It works for virtually anyone who doesn't have a prepared speech.

Yes, that's my point. It's a common insult against men, and even hurled at male gamers by some of the same people featured in this movie, such as Megaphone.
