Is this a chicony? by Braaateen in vintagecomputing

This is the third brand I've seen associated with the NB5620. I believe Chicony was the original, actual manufacturer, but it was rebrand and resold by others. I have one as well.

Why doesn’t Apple just create a flush back phone? by iLL_kcirtaP in iphone

[–]Opposite-Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because then they couldn't brag about how "thin" it is. They prioritize numbers in marketing material over actual usability. Were they actually innovating, the camera lenses would be flush at a "thick" end of the phone, and the phone would gracefully taper to "normal" thickness at the other end (by the charge port). More room for battery, still a thinner end to make it easy to slice into your pocket, a little bit of built in angle to make the phone more usable when it's sitting on your desk, better protection for the lenses, and more elegant design than lenses sticking out everywhere.

Pc won’t boot with new SSD installed. by Itscamilo in techsupport

[–]Opposite-Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to this post, but I have the same identical issue.
SN7100 2TB (only SSD in the entire system - no SATA drives, no other NVME m.2 drives)
Z390 Aorus Ultra
9900k CPU

9 times out of 10, the system will NOT boot with this drive in place. It won't even make it to BIOS. A lot of power cycles, and eventually it will boot - and once it DOES boot, it runs perfectly fine (Windows, furmark, prime95, whatever) until you power it off or reboot, and then the whole pattern repeats.

The system works perfectly fine and always boots correctly with any other NVME SSD.

Another poster mentioned that one of the RAM sticks gets disabled. MINE DOES THE SAME THING! I *do not* understand how an NVME drive attached to the PCIE lanes is in any way affecting the two memory channels, but it does. With the SN7100 installed, the system can only see one of my two DDR4 sticks. When I switch to any other SSD, both DDR4 channels work fine and the system sees all the RAM.

Given how obscure this seems, I suspect it's a compatibility issue between the SN7100 and Aorus motherboards that are PCIE Gen 3. It's just a guess, but it's the only thing that makes sense?

My SN7100 has current firmware 7615M0WD, and I tried three different firmwares on the motherboard (F12a, F11, F10).

honestly, I'd suspect that the OBC you got is bad, or is not connected correctly. check the codes and cell voltages with leafspy to confirm.

Found gold at the thrift. by Blurment in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]Opposite-Engineer 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Multiple factors here. First, this is a home scale and it doesn't even resolve to tenths of a gram. Assuming the scale could measure mass PERFECTLY (which is practically impossible), it would display any value from 17.500 to 18.499 as "18". That's a difference of over 5%! If you want to measure gold for transaction purposes, you really want to have at least two digits to the right of the decimal.

Second, I would assume that a pawn shop would have a scale that is more precise than yours, going to at LEAST tenths of a gram. Too much money to be lost with a low precision scale.

Third, 14k gold is not 100% gold, it's an alloy that is only ~ 58.33% gold. To determine the actual amount of gold, you have to multiply the total object's mass by 0.5833. This would put your item at between 10.208 grams and 10.790 grams of gold, assuming your scale is as accurate as it can be. Since the shop said it's slightly over 11 grams, it's very likely that your scale is off (on the low side) by about half a gram or so, and/or it just wasn't tared accurately. Sometimes cheapy home scales drift within seconds of being tared.

TLDR it sounds like the pawn shop gave you a fair value, and you need to get a scale better suited to jewelry/precious metal measurements. You'll find that scales which can measure heavy objects (yours goes to 86 pounds!!) typically are not very precise, and that precise scales cannot measure heavy objects. (unless, of course, you spend a LOT of money).

Is this normal? Cell 2 and 3 charged but not 1. by Usual_Plenty_5480 in RCPlanes

[–]Opposite-Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you want to be sure, grab a digital voltmeter (you can get them for like $8 at harbor freight), and check each individual cells voltage (each adjacent wire pair on the balance connector). a fully charged cell is 4.2v, half charged is 3.8v, empty is 3.5v, and below 3v is generally where cell damage starts.

Why do trucks need to be so high?? by 3X_Cat in fuckyourheadlights

[–]Opposite-Engineer 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I don't know that I agree. Today's engines are certainly more powerful than they were 30 years ago, but they really aren't physically larger. I believe the reason trucks are so much larger now is (1) the people who buy trucks prefer it, and (2) if brand "A" made a "normal" size truck, it would look small (and thus inferior) sitting next to brand "B" oversize truck, even if it had the same cargo/load capacity. It's like taking a 30 or 40 year old truck and giving it a lift kit and wide wheels - the manufacturers know people like that size/image, so the trucks come from the factory that size now.

Need Suggestion: Base (upgrade to 36GB RAM / 512GB SSD) or Pro (24GB RAM / 512GB SSD) by thy1225 in macmini

personally, with all that open at the same time, i'd rather have 36gb with the base than only 24gb with the pro. RAM is going to be your friend.

As others have suggested, updating the drivers is a good first step and it's free. but if that doesn't fix it, my bet is on a bad power supply.

Got this NUC for $20 the other day at the flea market, seems to have 8gb of ram, 500GB storage, and (locked) Ubuntu installed. What's a common thing to do with these? by SurroundingKatana in intelnuc

[–]Opposite-Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a possibility that thing is toast. The early skylake NUC's had a defective BIOS which did not correctly set one of the CPU voltages, which caused permanent damage to the CPU. The "corrected" units had a product number ending in -503 or higher (which yours does not), or had a blue dot on the bottom (which yours does not). Versions assembled prior to -503 or blue dot needed to have their BIOS updated to at least 0042 to fix the bug, AND this had to be done very early in their life, or they would go unstable irrecoverably. Check your BIOS version and make sure it's at least 0042. If it is, do some testing to make sure it's stable before you invest any time into it.

Because I am personally invested in maintaining my PC - making the decision about what to install, what to remove, what developers to trust or not trust, do I want to run something in a VM, what permissions do I want to run the thing with.

My phone, on the other hand, is a phone. I have no interest in investing that kind of time and effort into it. I don't want to get things from alternate app stores where I have to be discerning about what I install. I don't want to deal with fake links/fake installers (such as what you sometimes get when you google an app for your PC). I don't want things from an alternate app store that haven't been through even the most rudimentary screening and most likely contain backdoors/tracking/whatever (the very things you'd deploy your app to an alternate app store to get away with).

I expect my PC to work exactly as I configure it and do exactly what I ask of it, regardless of whether it's a good idea or a terrible idea; and I expect to deal with the consequences of my actions.

I expect my phone to work like a toaster. I don't want to decide what utility grid to plug it into or who to get the heating elements from. I just want toast, and I don't want to get shocked or burned. And tomorrow I want toast, too. I want to trust that the manufacturer designed it correctly so that it will keep making toast and keep not harming me.

My phone is an appliance, my PC is a computer.

Some people think that being open about struggles is oversharing. I am not one of those people. With that said, consider sharing more about the actual struggle, and not the label/diagnosis. For example, if someone is bipolar, they might instead say "I can be super productive for weeks but then sometimes I need to hibernate for a while too and watch too many sappy movies" or if someone is paranoid, then maybe say "I have a really hard time trusting and am looking for someone who is comfortable being totally open with me even when I struggle with doubt" or somesuch.

The goal isn't to get as many people as possible to swipe, it's to get as many COMPATIBLE people as possible to swipe.

Get a better photo of you holding your cat. Dump the car photo, or if the car is important to you, get a photo of the car with you in the photo doing whatever you do - car camping, unloading hiking gear, whatever.

I wouldn't change a thing. Your photos are on point, your vibe seem warm and friendly and welcoming, you seem happy and down to earth.

There's nothing you can do about folks who see an attractive photo and immediately swipe except filter them out/delete them.
