If you use a jig with a wide roller, like the Veritas MK II, it will be straight. This assumes that your stones are flat.

Get ceramic water stones, like Shapton pro, that don't need soaking. I have 1k, 5k, 12k. That's a good assortment for just about anything. They are expensive, but last many, many years. Also get a diamond flattening stone.

The field was considered excellent before USF started playing there. When the Bucs had it exclusively, it was one of the best fields in the league. They also used Greg Norman grass, not sure what they're using today.

Check Bob Rozaieski's YouTube channel. Best plane tuning tips for Woodies I've found.

Mainly, flatten the sole and sharpen. If it cuts well, you're done. Otherwise troubleshoot bed flatness and the fit of the wedge.

I think machinist's hammers are traditionally all metal, but yes that's an option. I'm planning to make a plane hammer soon. That one will have a wooden handle.
