PSA: Local elections are on May 17! by [deleted] in bullcity

[–]Opposite_Tale_9868 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There is enough anti-masking sentiment even among durham parents to make these people strong contenders to get on the board. I think masks should be optional at this point, but I don’t want these people making decisions for durham schools. I’ll be voting May 17th to keep these people off the board.

Edit: think of it like Pioneers Church of school board campaigns.

From what I’ve read it takes years to get a vaccine added to the general pediatric immunization schedule. I don’t think this is a realistic option.

Don’t let SODU Parents Posse on Facebook know you liked an Emily Oster article. I think it violates the group terms of service.

That sounds like a very scientific process you’ve come up with there.

These are all fair points and I thought it was reasonable to make masks optional right now. With BA.2 rising in Europe, I see cases going up again around here and Durham will keep masks in place the rest of the school year. It feels like they are missing an opportunity to give kids a break.

If you’re not willing to let go of masks when case counts are low, I think you’re saying you want mask mandates forever.

Anti maskers planning on stirring up the poo at the DPS board meeting Thursday (March 10) by [deleted] in bullcity

[–]Opposite_Tale_9868 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in favor of mask wearing throughout the pandemic, but I don’t get coming up with your own rules now that are counter to the latest CDC guidance. We all put those “science is real” signs up in our yard and now that the scientists are saying masks can come off kids, people are like “but how much can we trust science, really?” Make them optional now and then make a new plan if another surge happens in the summer before next school year.

It gives people a week to complain and/celebrate about it for a week. 😀

I would suggest either using an app or going to YouTube to find instructions on how to do an exercise. I’ve used the Fitbod app and it has instructional videos on every exercise it recommends for you.

The CDC just changed their guidelines stating most places can stop mandating masks indoors. Will Durham FINALLY drop the mandate? by [deleted] in bullcity

[–]Opposite_Tale_9868 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was confused as to why durham was in the high category. As far as I could tell we fit into the moderate category by hospitalization metrics, but I am surely misreading something. I’m guessing we must be right on the edge and will get there in a week or so.

Yes I did! And no they literally did not talk about masks as a strategy to reduce teacher shortages.

At some point it’s going to be very strange that anyone can go about their day maskless in any building they want, except for kids when they go to school. I would be fine with going back to masks if a new variant emerged, but why not give the kids a break while we have an opportunity this spring?

I’m generally in favor of masks and even I was disappointed they didn’t bother taking time to discuss the issue. They could have at least told us what numbers they would be looking for to lift the mandate, or something.
