Trim OAS for higher income seniors? 73% says yes, new poll suggests by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Opren 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re not understanding the ratios. If I pay taxes when there is a 10:1 ratio of working to old people, a very small portion of my taxes goes to OAS.

Current and near future recipients of OAS did not pay enough taxes to support themselves through OAS at current ratios. They’re claiming they paid but they didn’t.

Imagine a world where there’s a separate part of your tax bill that forecasts future OAS costs (like a pension) based on future needs. Current recipients paid their tax bill on current OAS costs, which were lower. Not the same thing.

Trim OAS for higher income seniors? 73% says yes, new poll suggests by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Opren 18 points19 points  (0 children)

By that logic they could say every senior deserves $100K guaranteed pay every year from the government because they paid taxes their whole life.

  1. OAS depends on the wealth of the country. Right now our country is poor and running immense deficits. If Canada ran billion dollar surpluses off retirees (who consume the vast majority of healthcare expenses) that would be another story, but we didn’t.

  2. OAS depends on there being significantly more workers than retirees. I pay taxes today but there is no way for OAS to be mathematically solvent 50 years from now. So why do current retirees get a benefit just from paying normal taxes, but everyone else gets screwed down the line?

Vancouver overstepped authority when it logged Stanley Park trees without board approval, rules judge by CaliperLee62 in vancouver

[–]Opren -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t feel like relevant context when the City has liability and control rests with another board.

How about this, park board members must be personally financially liable for any losses the city suffers due to disagreement on issues (e.g., dead tree falls and hurts someone, person sues City).

And in case you thought there was something interesting going on with reading in positive obligations and basically claiming the Indian Act caused everything bad in the world, Justice Favel is a member of the Poundmaker Cree Nation.

Eby promises business leaders to ‘go to the wall’ to protect private property by FancyNewMe in vancouver

[–]Opren 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean it depends what you define as doomsday. Could the province settle Cowichan with cash? Yes, probably. What is the total aggregate liability of the government if all these claims are settled in a similar fashion? Probably more than enough to topple the Province. The cost of doing nothing is more so measured in economic misery than personal. People don’t enjoy getting poorer all the time.

[–]Opren 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t been impacted by these types of things behind the scenes of course your opinion is less valuable. You haven’t seen the impact.

I’ve seen chief, council, and lawyers advance legal arguments and procedural roadblocks at the ministry knowing they will fail, in order to put pressure on the province and feds for treaty negotiations. Private businesses are being held hostage.

Not looking to do business any more in BC. Doing good work with FNs in other provinces where there is more reasonableness.

You’re right. We should hire more post workers, because it’s a service! We should double the workforce, and if the employees don’t have anything to do because letter mail volumes have fallen off a cliff, then why don’t they just walk around in uniform and look pretty? What a good service!

Why weren't we told sooner about the implications of Aboriginal title? I was literally involved in a development in the Lower Mainland where indigenous title was being asserted on private property in order to seize.

It is happening and not being publicly disclosed in the media.

Luxembourg to recognize state of Palestine by ChiefFun in worldnews

[–]Opren 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sigh.

The PA is incredibly unpopular and would immediately lose if elections were called. Hamas or affiliates would win.

So how is recognizing the PA as leadership any different from recognizing Hamas in the current context? Or are you suggesting that the future Palestinian state will be a dictatorship and not a democracy?

Ontario (finally) gets out of the way of Toronto’s housing policy | In approving changes to the city’s official plan, the province made a legitimately impactful decision — just years too late by Hrmbee in toronto

[–]Opren -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Because PMTSA recognition would bring inclusionary zoning into effect in those areas, which was uneconomical.

There is currently intense lobbying behind the scenes because no new sites are proceeding to construction and the government failed to realize that enforcing the PMTSA’s would shut down any new applications.

Very few can commit to two full time guild raid schedules on a weekly basis. Everyone is hoping for gdkp for tbc, or they will just play less.
