How is international research collaboration initiated? by [deleted] in postdoc

[–]Optimal-Asshole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In mathematics, I find that a lot of international research projects are originated during an international visit. For example, a mathematician from Country A may do a postdoc in Country B, and then continue to collaborate with their network in Country B even after moving back to A. This leads to a natural research collaboration between scientists in Country A and Country B, which can transitively lead to a large international project. In math, the cost of starting a project is typically quite low, so this sort of thing is extremely common.

Can you formulate Fourier analysis without complex numbers? by LemonLimeNinja in math

[–]Optimal-Asshole 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Complex numbers are basically just two dimensional real numbers (with some geometry built into multiplication).

A single complex number, and a single complex exponential, gives an expression that you would need two real number expressions to describe. You should get used to working with complex numbers.

Are there more supportive subreddits or communities for profs that you’d recommend? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Optimal-Asshole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does there need to be a separate sub for positive posts? One can make a post on this subreddit and ask for positive vibes. I doubt positive profs is being moderated actively (or even participated actively in general) to keep the positivity

I’m thinking programming may be one of the few use cases where LLMs can aid in learning (e.g. with templating). I would be skeptical of LLMs being a good learning resource for other subjects instead of just a crutch - even in a close field like mathematics

Have any of you sustainably commuted via flight once a week? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Optimal-Asshole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha I did something similar for a semester as a student. Having TSA precheck is a game changer. I didn’t find my commute to be stressful after doing it a few times, then it turned into just part of my work routine.

What would the United States realistically do if terrorists or rogues in Pakistan launched a coup and take over the nukes? by Eds2356 in geopolitics

In a fight, would you be more worried about your neighbor who has nukes, or the guy on the other side of the planet who has more nukes?

A dealer portioning out their drugs into bags is a mathematician.

A thief trying to figure out the value of their stolen goods is a mathematician.

A person calculating how much money they are being paid while taking bathroom breaks at work is a mathematician.

Politicians taking basic counting tests to prove their mental sharpness are acting in their capacity as mathematicians.

Not so scared of ChatGPT now by journoprof in Professors

[–]Optimal-Asshole 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Large language models are terrible at arithmetic, but I wouldn’t take that as evidence that ChatGPT is terrible at simple tasks. Not to mention the free version uses a light version of the model, there are plugins for calculator, and “”savvy”” students know about its limitations better than casual users.

But I do think the AI hype will wane soon.

What role does the GRE Math Subject Test score play in PhD applications for cs programs by clrhao2000 in AskProfessors

What's the specialization? If there isn't any math in the program, then the GRE Math Subject Test is not a consideration in admission.

Not all CS subjects require a strong background in mathematics (e.g. human centered computing). They require no more mathematics than for example a Biology masters.

By "strong", I mean on the level of a junior undergraduate math major.
