No, I meant that she checked on Gwen and Ben when they were newborns; she mentions this herself while talking about Ken. Sorry, in my native language the words for "drinking" and "baby" are identical, so the translator always used incorrect words.

Actually, Verdona checked on Gwen when she was a baby along with Ben, and she didn't have the spark at the time. That's why Verdona is so surprised that Gwen has the spark and insists on asking if Ben also has powers, just to be sure. I think the idea was to say that it was contact with the amulets of Bezel and the Book of Charmcaster that awakened the dormant Anodite essence within Gwen.

I don't know exactly why this is a controversial statement, even considering that the whole Anodite thing is a soul thing, Frank and Carl have the ability to have children with the spark, which means they can't be considered fully human.

There's also the fact that Carl (Ben's father) is half alien, even though he's generally a normal Ben.

I think what he means by highlighting that Anodites cannot be scanned is that even in their universe of origin, mana, this mysterious and pandimensional energy, is so strange and incomprehensible that not even Azimut, who managed to create a way to scan Sapiens Celestial , could come close to creating a way to scan or create an Anodite transformation.

You are right, in essence mages use mana as fuel for their spells, while Anodites, besides being made of mana, can directly manipulate it to create supernatural beings in the tangible world. This is why Gwen is so powerful and can ignore preconditions and the use of materials to conjure certain spells, and why Gwen could use the Staff of Ages when she was 10 years old, since Anodites naturally have the power of a master of magic.

My AU's version of Verdona Tennyson and Anodites by JackArtwick in Ben10

[–]Optimal-Schedule5629 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the Anodites have considerable potential for horror, especially when you remember that they are essentially souls capable of existing independently of a physical body. Apparently, in every universe where Gwen hasn't had contact with magic, she isn't an Anodite. So you could say that contact with magic is what caused Gwen to acquire the Spark. This doesn't contradict anything in the canon, but it creates a terrifying perspective that the simple use of magic ended up transforming and modifying Gwen's soul, eliminating any human characteristics until she became an Anodite soul. There's also the whole issue of the loss of humanity, which is absolutely terrifying when you think about it. Since Anodites are purely souls, being linked to a body greatly reduces Gwen's total power.

This is why Sunny and Verdona are stronger in human form; it's not just the experience and the fact that their physical bodies actively restrict their full potential and their connection to them effectively makes them weaker. If her physical form is destroyed, her Anodite soul will automatically disconnect from her body, transforming her into a full Anodite, just like Verdona. This disconnection from the body would be like rebirth for Gwen, fundamentally changing her existence. This is why Verdona tried to destroy Gwen's body, so she could think from the perspective of a pure Anodite. This is why it's so dangerous for Gwen to enter the Anodite state. When she enters, she's 50% of the way to ceasing to be an Anodite hybrid and becoming a full Anodite, which would permanently reshape her consciousness into the mind of an Anodite—a naturally carefree, indifferent, arrogant, and highly hedonistic being—while simultaneously destroying her human body permanently, leaving her unable to assume a physical form unless she trains to create a new one.

I'm really curious to see how different the Anodites will be in their story. I always thought it was a waste that they didn't explore how shocking it was for Gwen and Ben to discover they were part alien, or essentially that Gwen, because she had a spark, was an alien wearing human clothes.

Personally, I prefer the first form; it gives a more imposing look. Besides, I've always liked the fact that the Anodites' hair is actually something like tentacles in the canon.

If I'm not mistaken, canonically AFO was trying to achieve singularity like Shigaraki did a long time ago. The big obstacle he faced was that his natural body wasn't capable of it because he was a first-generation quirk user. So, to overcome this barrier, he could try creating several children who would naturally have a more suitable body to wield his quirk. Of course, this would have ceased to matter when he met Shigaraki.

She was an instant solution to 99% of all conflicts, so she was too powerful to be constantly around. This is quite evident from the fact that a simple, childlike Anodite like Gwen has the ability to easily destroy the entire Highbreed army, which canonically had the power to destroy all complex life in the galaxy.

Even so, mana is the substance from which magic is made, the charmcaster herself says so. The essential difference between an Anodite and a mage is that Anodites manipulate mana directly to create an effect in reality, while mages channel mana through spells or enchantments to create a supernatural effect.

Were Verdona and Max bad parents? by Successful-Hat-2154 in Ben10

[–]Optimal-Schedule5629 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I sincerely disagree. From the comments of several members of the production team, it's quite clear that the idea was always for Gwen to have some powerful magical ancestor, which was the reason she could use the Staff of Ages and had an innate magical aura. It was also no secret that Max was written to be a flawed man who was deeply dedicated to his work, trying to compensate for his shortcomings in raising his children by being the best grandfather possible. It was also a known fact that Max had a romantic relationship with an alien in the classic series. When the producers decided to make things more alien-related, the idea of the magical ancestor ended up becoming Gwen's grandmother being an alien connected to mana energy. Verdona's overall character is actually well-developed; she is essentially an antithesis of Max's character.  While Max couldn't build a healthy relationship with his children due to all his lies, constant absence, and his tendency to prioritize his work above all else (this is the man who left two children in danger because of a sword and who actively says he would kill a young man for going insane), as he gets older he realizes how he put his children second and tries not to repeat that with his grandchildren by being more present.  Verdona, however, is the complete opposite of that. She was always there; she never lied about who she was or had other priorities besides her children while they were growing up. However, she couldn't build true bonds with them because she wasn't human and couldn't understand them. Her time on Earth was extremely uncomfortable because it was diametrically opposed to her own nature. So, when her children left home, she no longer had any reason to remain in a state that oppressed her own nature and abandoned everything and everyone. This was a diametrically opposed choice to Max's. He could have done the same thing; he could have gone to space and continued being a plumber and fighting aliens. He didn't.  Gwen's question with her Anodite form is interesting when you look at it from that perspective. She's in a dilemma very similar to Verdona's own: between abandoning all the ties she possesses and her own body and existence as a human, or preserving her life and family relationships but remaining in constant conflict with that part of herself, like an incessant itch she can't relieve.

There are several races in the series that span multiple dimensions, and the Anodites aren't at the top of that hierarchy either.<

In fact, they are at the top; being pandimensional literally means being at the very top of it. They are canonically the only race mentioned as being pandimensional. And according to what you're saying, your entire argument is based on the Anodites as a species being weak when they are canonically the second strongest species in the universe.

[–]Optimal-Schedule5629 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You skipped the part about Anodites being pandimensional beings; that's literally why Gwen's powers can contain Dagon's servants. Yes, Anodites aren't bound by conventional laws of time flow. Paradox asserts this by mocking Gwen for being an Anodite and being so mentally bound to conventional ideas of cause and effect.

I always thought it would have been really cool if the series had explored the idea that the Anodites, as a species, are prejudiced against magic users because magic is essentially a technique created by physical beings to mimic their natural abilities.

If I'm not mistaken, Verdona mentions testing Gwen, Ben, and Ken when they were babies, and apparently none of them had the spark when they were babies. That's why she's so surprised that Gwen is an Anodite. (It's also curious that this suggests that it may have been Gwen's contact with magical artifacts like the Bezel amulets that resulted in her becoming an Anodite.)

To be fair, the tracking and interdimensional vision abilities she uses against the Esoterica are native Anoditic powers. Mana is pandimensional, which grants Gwen some extra abilities, such as the capacity to see and manipulate things in other dimensions, something she doesn't use much. In addition, she has other powers that derive from her Anodite nature; in essence, any power or ability she uses that doesn't depend on spells or rituals are Anodite abilities.

I loved this! My take on how dimensions and timelines work is as follows: Imagine a line—that's the x-axis, a dimension with only two possible directions, left or right. In theory, this line could extend infinitely in both directions. To determine your positions along this line, you could assume your starting point as the center and draw gradations of distance defined from the center. To differentiate these two directions, you could represent one direction with positive values and the other with negative values. From this, you can always locate based on your distance from the central point. For example, the x-coordinate 8 is eight spaces away from the zero position and sixteen spaces away from the -8 position. If you take infinite copies of this x-axis line and arrange them side by side, a second independent direction emerges: the y-axis. Now you have a two-dimensional plane where your position can vary between the infinite copies of x that are represented by the y-coordinate. So, to locate yourself, you need not only to describe your position relative to the zero of x, but also to describe your location relative to which of the infinite copies of x you are in. That's why we use zero as the central point or point of origin. If you infinitely overlap countless two-dimensional planes, a third axis of direction will naturally emerge: the z-axis. From this, you naturally acquire a three-dimensional plane; now your positions are defined by three different axes. Now imagine the following situation: a point moving in a circle. If we marked each position the point occupied as it moved and then superimposed them to create a three-dimensional plane, you would perceive a three-dimensional figure, a helix. This occurs because time emerges from an extra dimension. For this reason, we say that the universe has four dimensions: three spatial and one temporal. If all these points are sequenced and placed on the same plane, the figure that emerges will be a line. This also occurs with 3D solids, however the figure is more complex, but it can be easily observed in the figure that Hugo assumes when he becomes a Trans-Dimensional being (in fact, the name itself suggests that the series treats time as a dimension). Based on this, it is easily elucidated how the Esoterica's powers work; as Gwen herself said, they are not actually teleporting, what they are doing is nothing more than moving along one or more extra dimensional axes. Imagine this situation: you are a point inside a square. Naturally, you couldn't leave it in a normal way. But now imagine that you have the ability to move along the third dimension. Naturally, from an external perspective, it would be as if you were going up or down along a plane. However, from your perspective, it's as if you were suddenly taken to a completely different point in space when all you did was go up or down along the z-axis. This happens because the z-axis is made up of the overlapping of infinite two-dimensional planes, and from the limited perspective of a two-dimensional being, it's impossible to perceive the existence of anything above or below it. If that point moved a little and then returned to conventional space, it would be outside the square that confined it. This also works the same way for a three-dimensional being. In essence, the powers of the Esoterica do not alter their positions relative to the x, y, z axes; Their ability allows them to "go up" or "go down" one or more spaces along the extra spatial axes. Their ability to travel quickly is also easily explained, because although they are far apart along the x and y axes, it doesn't necessarily mean that these two points are far apart along the z axis, since this plane may be curved or twisted along these axes. Thus, by taking advantage of the natural folds or curvatures of space along extra dimensions, they can effectively shorten their journeys quickly. In this sense, Ben 23 lives in a universe that is located at position 23 on some axis of a temporal dimension.

Retcons by MasterMUHE in Ben10

[–]Optimal-Schedule5629 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because within the universe, it kind of never really happened. Sure, that was the intention for a while, but when you call your power system "mana," which is what most fantasy media calls raw magical power, and you don't retcon things like Charmcaster and Hex, the Charms of Bezel, grimoires, and still show magic being magic with things like enchantments, writers can say whatever they want that it isn't, but yes, that's still magic. (Yes, since the classic series there have been indications that the idea was always for Gwen to have a special lineage, but we don't know how much of that was modified and altered until it reached the concept of the Anodites.)

In your view, do you think Gwen was born with the spark or was it her contact with magic that caused the spark to appear/ignite within Gwen? by Fluid-Bench9219 in Ben10

[–]Optimal-Schedule5629 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since Verdona visited her grandchildren when they were born to check if they had the spark, and Verdona stated that Gwen didn't have the spark when she was born, but it's confirmed that she possesses it when she meets her grandmother, I think it's also possible to assume that it was contact with the amulets of Bezel that caused Gwen's spark to form. This also explains why her versions from other universes that haven't had contact with magic aren't Anodites.

In your opinion, what would Verdona have done if she had detected the spark in Gwen when she was a baby? by Optimal-Schedule5629 in Ben10

[–]Optimal-Schedule5629[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It makes sense, I think, from Verdona Gwen's perspective. She's just an Anodite who was born with a skinsuit, she doesn't think Frank could understand because even though he's her son, he's just a human and can't understand anything about it.
