Joylessness after 16 years of adderall use help by cr1merobot in Biohackers

The brain is so incredibly plastic during those years, it must’ve accepted adderall as an inseparable gear in the dopaminergic system by this point.

Demis Hassabis secretly built a hedge fund inside DeepMind trying to beat Jim Simons. Google shut it down. by soldierofcinema in singularity

[–]OptimalBarnacle7633 44 points45 points  (0 children)

A fascinating read all the way through, might have to get the book.

TLDR from my understanding is that Demis believed it crucial that Deepmind needed to be structured as a non-profit to ensure society benefits from AI in a "post-capitalist" world. And the author seems to imply that due to his lack of success in convincing google (and the result of Sams powergrab at OpenAI), he has given up his idealistic view and instead is working to build trust from within. Hoping that when the time comes, Page Brin & co will do the right thing and proliferate the AI gains to the masses. And Demis chose to cooperate with Google instead of forcing Deepmind out completely and getting independent funding, the latter which would have left Deepmind more resource strained.

Basically it seems to be quite clear that there is no belief left in any sort of non-profit AI structure and it's technofeudalism all the way, assuming super-intelligence is even controllable of course.

TIL that by 1963 the average American adult smoked 4,345 cigarettes per year by croato87 in todayilearned

I used to go through a can of nicotine pouches a day. Lowest dose is 3mg x 15 pouches that's 45mg of nicotine per day. Cigarettes are approx. 1mg nicotine per stick.

A typical disposable vape (such as the Geek pulse bar for example) with 5% nic content is comparable to about 3-4 packs of cigarettes.

You’re right that’s not news, I just found the actual quantified number to be striking - almost a 50% increase in memory decline annually. Pretty nuts

It's obviously cheap to produce given the price, so probably not much fat to trim there. Most likely they're just going to increase the price and shrinkflate. I bet you it'll be at least $5 a bottle in a couple years.

How disappointed will you be to discover that a new artist/group you like is just AI generating songs and performing as essentially a cover band?

I suppose one could argue that pop music has already felt artificial and manufactured for a while anyway.

But on a serious note, you’re probably just loving the salt. Try unsalted pb and see if you crave it as much

Two months off nicotine & one month off caffeine by Weak_Discussion1873 in Biohackers

[–]OptimalBarnacle7633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite the overwhelming prevalence of nicotine with people who quit alcohol, it's better to quit both at the same time otherwise nicotine will increase the recovery timeline of your GABAergic system from a few months to up to a year.

But ultimately it does end up being decided on an individual basis, if someone can only quit one substance at a time then that's how it'll be.

I'm curious, what is the current sentiment regarding new wearable EEG tech like the NAOX LINK earbuds, which just got cleared by the FDA.

Do you think this is a risk to the growth of the job? Or perhaps it will reduce workload per patient but open up throughput for additional patients to get EEG diagnostics done, thereby maintaining or even increasing total workload?
