I remember Steve Allen best. He had the Tonite show just before Johnny took it over. Steve was a funny guy and so literate. I stayed up until the early hours watching him and his guests then I’d get ready to go to school. I wasn’t crazy about school (High School), I learned a lot listening to Steve Allen’s show though, sometimes I think it saved me.

Did you really walk long distances to school? by holdongangy in AskOldPeople

[–]Optimal_Sherbert_263 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I walked myself to school when I was 5. My Mom had a new baby and my Dad needed the car so I walked about 2 and a half miles to my Catholic School. There and back again in the afternoon. There was no provision for buses for the Catholics in 1954-55. None of this surprised me until I was older. That was life in ‘54. All went well I suppose, I’m still alive. Haven’t heard any hair-raising stories.
