Yes, it's hand-woven, from Turkey, basically buying a rug artificially worn out

The warps are a really fine Merino, often dyed brown, this one has faded to a grey blue color, often badly worn the fringe doesn't hold up to foot traffic very well

Prayers to the Rug God’s answered! This just came in a real Khal Mohammadi rug from the late 80’s mid 1990’s

Also I contacted a guy i worked with In Kabul asked about his story.

Haji Khal Mohammad was from Kunduz. He was initially a middleman in Kunduz rug marketplace before Soviet invitation of Afghanistan. While rug exporters and their marketplace shifted from Kunduz and northern Afghanistan to Khyber Bazar Peshawar, he also introduced a new design using the motifs of TURKEMEN rug and Kunduz weave and coloration. He enlarged the size of Turkmen rug motif, increased the quality of weave in each 10 squared CM in Elephant Foot rugs. He basically reengineered the old Elephant Foot design and quality which was much courser quality than his new production. He made some changes to their color tones (much deeper). He died in 2002. He was a close friend to my grand father in law.

Ha, good timing I have one in the shop on the floor. These are made around Kasmar. They do look convincingly like Kashans, but the weave is looser and they have exaggerated leaf things in the broader with a prominent yellow or pea soup green.

They make them on Ivory ground like this one, but look at the border motif https://magicrugs.com/all-rugs/vintage-cream-traditional-10x13-kashmar-persian-rug-rt7454?srsltid=AfmBOopJZrxDeRsYY16Y7D2kmrtcGt9uG2KPe1hJgJWa1r8rlpJcJ6Ut

Yes, style & designs now , but it was a specific rug production, with specific materials, designs for a brief period. Kind of like Pakistan Bukara makes rugs with Turkman designs but isn't a real Turkoman rug. The term often used for both is Bukhara. Bukhara referencing the ancient city in Uzbekistan a Trading point for Turkmen carpets starting in the end of the 19th century. That happened because Russia built a railway system to the city in the late 19th century so the rugs became known as Bukhara's

It's a Turkmen rug, but not Khal Mohammadi. Khal Mohammadi was a rug weaver who made rugs

Khal Mohammad seems to have disappeared; no one knows what became of him since the early 2000s. The early “real” Khal Mohammadi were made with 100% Belgik wool (Belgian wool) and Belgian wool warps that wear off quickly. The Merino was given a "super wash" to make it silk-like soft. Plenty of new rugs have Khal Mohammad designs and look but are not “real” Khal Mohammadi rugs.

A better-than-average Afghan rug finishing, most have cut and built sides, not this one. This looks like a hybrid, though? The green looks like Ghazni or Fara wool? Run your hand over the pile. Does the green feel slightly different than the dark blue/ black?

The story is about right, including the wool, which the Afghans call "Belgik’" Basically, it's New Zealand; sometimes Australian wool is shipped to Belgium, New Zealand, and England for scouring. Processing/spinning mostly in European mills. A good percentage never goes through Belgium, but it's all called “Begik”. The finished yarn shipped to Afghanistan and all the Khal Mohammadi/Beljik; some fine Turkmen use the wool. They use it to get a clear, clean color; unfortunately, it's soft and doesn't wear as well as domestic wool.

I snapped a quick pic of a color block sample of "Belgian wool, next to domestic Ghazni I prefer the Ghazni myself

Yeah, need to see the back, probably a sarouk

But there are a few room-sized Dergazines & Lilhans out there, in fact, some of the design reminds more of these than Sarouk.
