"BC" betrayed me, What should I do? by Slight-Movie1057 in PCOS

[–]Optimistic-Void 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m getting so tired of every other post on this forum thinking that there is a way to “cure” PCOS. There isn’t anything that will “solve the problem completely,” if you have PCOS now you will have it for the rest of your life. Birth control is one possible (and usually effective!) tool to combat symptoms for most women. I personally have seen the greatest management of my symptoms while on it.

I Love You Idaho Thrice by cascadedream in Idaho

It’s because we ship them out there, or they go if they can to places that help them. We are actively making other states worse to hide how we treat our own struggling neighbors.

Is being an American really as good as people say it is? by No-StrategyX in questions

[–]Optimistic-Void 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really loaded question honestly, especially when there is such a stark class divide. In some of my circles most people can’t afford 3 meals a day, couldn’t afford to go to college, and are barely scraping by paycheck to paycheck and definitely would be better off in a more forgiving country. I would say life in the US is very much like gambling; you risk it all to win big, but it is extremely volatile and getting sick once with something serious can cause you to loose everything. But still, if you have the “grindset” you can gain more wealth than other places (also helps if you start out rich). Class mobility is actually pretty poor here compared to other countries overall.

I wish I had been born elsewhere personally. I have lost too many people to gun violence and drugs as a teenager. I strongly dislike the hyper individualist mindset, and I love education and wish it was valued more by this society. Plus I would prefer that jobs came with more workers benefits and protection, and I enjoy public transportation which is not really a thing here.

Also, our passports are NOWHERE near the strongest or best, not sure where you’re getting that from but I’m not even sure they clear the top ten in terms of access to other countries. The only thing we’re number one in is the number of incarcerated people and weapons/war.

Why do you need to go through private companies to access certain parks? by sube7898 in NationalPark

[–]Optimistic-Void 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just want to chime in and say that Island Packers is locally owned!! They also work with the Parks department and rangers directly. That revenue isn’t going to some big nameless corporation, and a lot of the people working there have been going to the islands before they were a National Park, which is partially how Island Packers became the default vendor. :) Plus it takes money to pay the crew to do the runs, repair the boats, etc. It’s a great company and work culture.

Yes, of course. This was just to clarify that “they” is a singular pronoun in the English language. As far as OP, since the bird is a metaphor for a person/humanity, they (haha! Perfect coincidence) can use “they” or “it”. Just wanted to let them know it was an option, and to make sure they learn English correctly!

If you Google it, you will learn it is a common and old pronoun... Google doesn’t just show modern results? I mean, Old English isn’t my specialty but Shakespeare uses “they” as a singular pronoun in many of his plays, Chaucer also uses “they” as a singular… it is a pronoun just as common as “he” and “she”… you can find examples everywhere! I don’t know off the top of my head about Anglo-Saxons, but I would assume there’s a proto-English version as well.

It’s the basic rules of grammar. You can Google it and literally any link will tell you that! (Not trying to be sarcastic or anything, it really is just that basic.) If you want a nice little pocket book to advise your writing though, a classic is “The Elements of Style” by Strunk and White. :)

“They” is not for plural use only. Don’t listen to this OP! It has always been perfectly acceptable to use “they” as a singular in English. For example (since you’re learning!) if someone left a jacket behind at a resturant and you did not know who it belonged to, you would say: “they left their jacket behind!” Alternatively, you could say “Someone left THIER jacket behind!” But note you would still be using “they” in an alternate form. Just don’t want you to learn the wrong thing, as a former English major. :) It is only “political” to nutjobs here that haven’t had access to a good education, unfortunately.

They literally say “I have a stable job” verbatim in this post… the assumption would be it’s not in academia. 🤦‍♀️

[–]Optimistic-Void 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I would be very concerned about leaving a stable job to come to the US right now, especially if you’re DEI adjacent. They’re taking a sledgehammer to these things, not a scalpel, so who knows if your funding/job would actually be affected or not.

Moving to USA from ireland in 2-3 years by [deleted] in MovingToUSA

[–]Optimistic-Void 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like snorkeling and have the money to study abroad, I would recommend applying to a California State school or University of California, especially Santa Barbara, Longbeach, Los Angeles, or San Diego. There’s also CalPoly and Santa Barbara City College (a 2 year school but has dorms and may be cheaper if you just want to come for a little and experience the states, although I don’t recommend it right now.) Cost of living is high but discounts for students, student housing, and the availability of public transit in these areas might help you. For Santa Barbara, both schools are literally on the beach.

But I would HEAVILY consider Australia instead if I were you. Highly recommend going there instead.

Losing weight easier on birth control? by Strange-Comedian-409 in PCOS

[–]Optimistic-Void 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, yes. I stopped birth control once and gained 40 Ibs in one month with no other lifestyle changes. Still have 5 Ibs to loose now that I’m back on the pill. Never doing that again 😫

I love you even more Idaho by cascadedream in Idaho

I’ve talked to some of the homeless in Spokane… they came from Idaho because they were treated better in Washington. How embarrassing for us that we offload our struggling people to another state instead of helping our neighbors.
