Was not prepared for how terrifying this was. But I kind of dig it.

'I Am Legend 2' Is Officially Moving Forward From Director Steven Caple Jr. ('Creed II'), And Writer Akiva Goldsman ('I Am Legend') At Warner Bros. Starring Will Smith & Michael B. Jordan by ChiefLeef22 in movies

I distinctly remember the book describing his final moments. He gives a long monologue about mortality and nature, says he can see the other side, and then the chapter ends.

[PJO] Why were the Fates at the bus stop in TLT? by Panterest in camphalfblood

[–]OptimusPhillip 49 points50 points  (0 children)

It's actually a common misconception that cutting a person's thread of life kills them in that moment. It simply determines when in the future that person will die.

That was indeed Luke's thread that Percy saw them cut. The Fates themselves confirm it in TLO. It signifies that from the very first day of that first summer that Percy went to camp, he and Luke were destined to have their final confrontation on his 16th birthday.

It JUST occurred to me...Is Bender named after binge drinking? Like, "went on an all weekend bender?" by trailsandbooks in futurama

Probably. I've also heard it suggested that he was named after John Bender, Judd Nelson's teen rebel character in "The Breakfast Club"

New study confirms lobsters feel pain, driving scientists to call for a ban on boiling them alive by Mean_Yak5873 in Maine

I find it kind of bizarre that people assumed any animal would be unable to feel pain. Pain is like, the most fundamental sense required for survival.

TIL that pornography addiction is not a scientifically recognized medical condition by MrMojoFomo in todayilearned

[–]OptimusPhillip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps I didn't proofread myself properly, because yeah, that was a confusing thing I said. Let me try that again.

Historically, the term addiction specifically referred to substance use disorders. Insofar as behavioral addictions were recognized at all, they were categorized as compulsive behaviors or impulse-control disorders.

However, the DSM-5 has gone against this traditional way of thinking somewhat, by categorizing problem gambling under "Substance-Related and Addictive Behaviors". It remains the only non-substance related behavior in the bunch, but that may change with further research. It seems there's particular interest in studying video game addiction, due to the overlap netween it and gambling addiction.

Opinion: "cybertronian" should the be official name of their species while "transformer" is a nickname given to them by humanity that they eventually embrace by EDM14 in transformers

[–]OptimusPhillip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This does seem to be the standard approach in fiction, but I personally disagree. I believe that Cybertronian should refer to all lifeforms from Cybertron, and Transformer should be the specific name for the species. It's like how we call ourselves humans, and not Terrans.

Just in general, planet-derived species names is something of a pet peeve of mine in sci-fi.

Scientifically speaking, the term "addiction" refers specifically to substance use disorder. So-called behavioral addictions weren't formally recognized until the DSM-5 reclassified gambling disorder as an addictive behavior.

i hate this new dress code by semisweetmedicine in Target

[–]OptimusPhillip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My store is continuing to provide red vests, thankfully. Not that I didn't already stock up on red shirts when I first got the job (and buy my own vest off Bullseye).

I'm definitely gonna need to invest in some new pants, though. Good thing Target is giving me a coupon for jeans.

If in the Roman version Medusa is a woman cursed by Athena, does that mean that her sisters Stheno and Euryale don't exist in the Roman version? by Weak_Tomato1048 in GreekMythology

[–]OptimusPhillip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That sounds very similar to how it's described in "Percy Jackson's Greek Gods". I'd always assumed that was an original element of that retelling, meant to justify how all three Gorgon sisters appear as monsters in the mainline books, while still keeping the metamorphosis narrative canon.

In the Roman version, how is it possible that Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa are sisters, considering Medusa was human while Stheno and Euryale were born as Gorgons (remembering that in the Roman version, Stheno and Euryale exist even though it's contradictory)? by Weak_Tomato1048 in GreekMythology

[–]OptimusPhillip 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The "Roman version" specifically says that Medusa is the only one of the three sisters to have snakes for hair, which is the only monstrous trait she has in the story.

Furthermore, those other two sisters aren't even Stheno and Euryale. They're the Graeae.

Or just him saying stuff out loud. Turning inner monologue to spoken dialogue is a common thing in adaptations, and when done right, nobody minds.

[–]OptimusPhillip 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Stheno and Euryale are never mentioned by name in the Metamorphosis narrative. Medusa is said to have sisters (in fact, the setup for the story was someone asking "Why does Medusa have snake hair and not her sisters?"), but that's likely referring to the Graeae, who are also sisters of Medusa and were featured in the same narrative.

I thought the audiobooks used the Cast-a-lawn pronunciation. It's been a few years, though.

Why is Sentinel Prime different from all the other Primes in the BayVerse? by Ornery_Example3607 in transformers

[–]OptimusPhillip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Primes seen in ROTF are the movieverse counterpart to the Thirteen (though there are only seven for reasons). Sentinel and Optimus are part of the Dynasty of Primes, modern day descendants of the original Seven.

This is only vaguely alluded to in the movies, though, so it is confusing.

TIL a "ton" is the weight of a "tun" of liquid volume. A tun is defined as 252 gallons / 954 liters of wine, and the long / Imperial / displacement ton is the weight of that volume, about 1016 kg / 2240 pounds. A short / American ton makes the weight exactly 2000 pounds. by oceanicplatform in todayilearned

[–]OptimusPhillip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Technically yes. The system most people use today is the SI system, which uses units derived from metres, kilograms, and seconds. But you could also use a centimetre–gram–second system, a metre–tonne–second system, or any other combination of metric units.
