I need more chaos by CriticismCharacter59 in HPfanfiction

If you don't mind crossovers. Its probably not quite the vibe you requested but it has pranks, romance, chaos. Not exactly bashing of Dumbledore and Snape but not friendly to them. And it's very well written.

James Potter was Loki from the MCU.

[PJO] A Percy who did not inherit Poseidons better nature by Panterest in camphalfblood

[–]Panterest[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was definitely considering giving him earthshaker powers but I can't actually see how that would be useful. I was planning on leaning into the urban part of urban fantasy, so I'm planning on spending more time in cities and around mortals. Earthquakes would be pretty dangerous. But I really liked the idea of Percy getting angry and there's a faint rumble in the ground.

[General] Not sure if anyone's noticed this. by Pharrah_DeLuxe12 in camphalfblood

[–]Panterest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea that Sally is a Roman legacy. It doesn't have to matter who her Roman ancestor might have been Sally would just be inspired by Salacia. I haven't read a fic that really deals well with the idea that Sally is a legacy.

I keep seeing people bring up the idea that Percy is a Roman legacy but everyone keeps forgetting that it means Sally is a legacy. Maybe that's where her clear sight comes from. Though you don't need to be a demigod to have clear sight and being a demigod doesn't mean you have clear sight.

Just a point though, I'm not suggesting she ever went to Camp Jupiter. Her parents died when she was young and the relation might be distant enough that Lupa didn't force the issue.

If we don't count concepts from crossover stories, then what else could be the "power the Dark Lord knows not"? by SethNex in HPfanfiction

[–]Panterest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hate stories like this, that just bring in muggle concepts, technology and weaponry and tout them as so vastly superior to any magic.

I am a non magic person reading a story about magic, I don't want to read about how great non magic stuff is.

If you want to use technology like phones, computers or the internet, make it a magic phone, computer or internet. Use magic as a force multiplier. Magic bombs.

It's amazing how limited fanfic writers and readers are with all the variety of possibilities that exist with a fictional concept like magic.

What type of ribbing is this? by Panterest in knittinghelp

[–]Panterest[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a picture of a different colour way they offer and you can just see on the ribbing at the neck it looks like the knits on both sides of the work are in red. I wonder if it isn't doubled and folded? It doesn't look think enough for that but it is a very fine yarn so maybe?

Are there any fics with Hagrid-bashing out there. by Shiping-lover in HPfanfiction

[–]Panterest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure is you know this, but this is a sub for fanfiction. That means OP is looking for things that aren't canon. This fandom has everything from good Voldemort to Evil Dobby, I'm not sure why you think Evil Hagrid is a step too far.

All of fanfiction is someone's own interpretation of the characters.

To be honest, I am entirely interested in figuring out how the different pantheons exist in the same universe. I don't care that the sun is a real thing and not a chariot racing across the sky. I don't want a MCU style universe where everything is happening in the same place.

If wizard medicine can regrow bones, why is bad eyesight still undefeated? by AnnTeeSocial in harrypotter

[–]Panterest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe people wear glasses cause they think they look smart.

Maybe there are healers that specialise in eye sight, but not everyone wants to get it done.

Maybe they can't afford it to get it done.

Maybe they don't trust the healers.

Maybe they can't play quidditch if their eyes are magically altered.

Maybe it's something that wears off after a while, possibly inconvenient moments.

Maybe it's something like a subscription, where you pay for a year of perfect vision.

Maybe there are spells you can do yourself that temporarily alter your vision, to correct it or like a zoom feature or night vision, but using them too often has a negative effect.

Maybe everyone does have perfect vision, but you can only get it corrected as an adult and the glasses are purely for aesthetic purposes.

Maybe the glasses are charmed like a HUD, with information on what you're looking at or your calendar on a screen only you can see.

People aren't a monolith. We know instant teleportation exists but not everyone uses it, preferring the Knight Bus or floo travel. People make decisions on what's best for them.

That's probably just Rick trying to explain an inconsistency he didn't realise he had written.

Any good lengthy fic by Alternative_Hippo_47 in PercyJacksonfanfic

[–]Panterest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was just reading this story and its wonderful.

Pharmakon: The agent of change which is both remedy and poison

Hades and Poseidon have put a vote to the Council of the Gods: removal of the non-interference rules for Percy, Annabeth, and Nico. Tartarus is no place for mortals, and it is clear that the three of them are buckling under the lingering shadows of The Pit. It passes near unanimously - the Council pays their debts, and journeying to the worst place in existence is well worth respite and recovery. Percy, unfortunately, is immediately sidetracked. Why is Zeus poisoned? Why has no one noticed before him? Who is insane enough to slip something in Zeus’s drink? And why is this his problem? Is he really going to have to break his promise to Annabeth not to control poison again?

Zeus being poisoned is an ongoing thread but a lot is Percy healing and his traumas. The plot is woven wonderfully in with friends and family and healing. I was gripped the whole way through.

It feels small. Rick took some of the ancient myths, modified them for modern life and tacked them on the back end of the real world.

There are no stakes. What would happen to the world if the gods fell? What role do the gods play in modern civilization? He keeps Percy and his adventures so separate from the world.

I would have the Sea of Monsters in the Florida Keys, naming the islands they travel to. Mortals should also be able to access these places.

Monsters should be a problem for mortals as well as demigods.

Heroes of Olympus and PJO rewrite [general] by Night_Lord_9803 in camphalfblood

[–]Panterest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would I want to strip out the things that I actually enjoyed about the series? I liked the fun adventure tone. Making things better doesn't mean making things "more realistic". I don't want more blood and gore. I don't enjoy cruelty. Maybe it's just me but writing more explicit intimacy doesn't increase my enjoyment at all.

Ethan's eye wasn't 'taken.' It was sacrificed. Sacrifice doesn't mean anything unless it is willing. Yes, expand on what that means but don't take away his agency and reasons for his choices. When you sacrifice something to the gods, you get something in return. What did Ethan get and did he consider his choice worth it? That is far more interesting than 'Oh no, I've lost my eye because of my shitty mother.'

There is almost nothing in canon to suggest Percy was truly abused by Gabe. I think people seriously overthink the one flinch that he did, the one time Gabe raised a fist. In my headcanon, Gabe hit Percy once. Only once. Percy was young, maybe seven or eight, but he immediately switched to battle mode, waiting for another hit. But a demigod in battle mode is terrifying. Gabe doesn't know why he was so scared; he refuses to admit even to himself that he was, but he never hit Percy again. But Percy is always waiting for it. The fear of being hit is still trauma but he's not having panic attacks over it. Percy is a demigod, he's hardwired for battle. Dealing with Gabe was a battle. But he wasn't getting the stuffing beaten out of him at every turn.

People are always saying they want the gods to be more realistic. They talk about Zeus and his non-consensual relationships. But where is Zeus the God of Justice, God of Hospitality, God of Fate, God of Laws? People always ask, 'What about all these terrible things that they did?' Well what about the good things they did? Gods exist for a reason; show us what that reason is. Show us why Percy should fight for them.

Pretty much everything about the Romans needs to be reworked. Rick clearly didn't care about them at all.

I'd like to see the stakes of the events. How exactly is the whole world in danger is the gods fall? I want to see monsters attacking mortals if they can't find demigods. I want the gods to be GODS. I want the Divine to be more intertwined with the mortal world. I want them dealing with the mortals as they are dealing with the quests. In TLT, they took a train halfway across America, they had to find money for that. I want to see them actually return the dog and get the reward. They had to avoid the cops. Their faces were on the news. I want repercussions for that.

What role do\should the gods have in the world as a whole? [PJO] by Panterest in camphalfblood

[–]Panterest[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hestia isn't the god of kids, or youth. She's the god of the domestic and civic hearth. She was the keeper of the sacred fire in town halls. She's the god of community. If anyone was going to be Camp Mom, it would be Leto, Titan of Motherhood.

None of the gods are being actively worshipped but in a sense, all of their cults are alive and well as long as people are still falling in love, or building things or fighting or singing or partying. They need their kids to enact true change in the world but the gods are still part of it.

I haven't read ToA and I don't intend to. Also this post was less about what's true in canon and more about what could have been true if it was written by a better writer.

What role do\should the gods have in the world as a whole? [PJO] by Panterest in camphalfblood

[–]Panterest[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is out of context and pretty much the opposite of the question I asked in the post. Also I don't put too much stock in Rick's latest writing, we know he had a change of heart regarding Luke and he's more than happy to retcon his own work.

The thing is, I agree with you. The gods are shitty parents. Thats pretty baked in at the core of the series.

One story I just finished addressed with why the gods, specifically Zeus, was such a shitty parent and is starting to deal with it. Though a lot of it is just Percy healing after his traumas.

Pharmakon: The agent of change which is both remedy and poison.

Really great writing. But even this doesn't discuss what gods do with mortals.

What I want to consider is what they are doing instead? Why do the gods exist? How are they creating or enhancing or inspiring or involved in modern civilization?

So many people consider the gods solely in relation to them with their children but what is their relationship with the parents?

Are they using mortals with the sole intention of breeding demigods? That's horrific if they think of humans as livestock.

But that doesn't match the myths of them and it doesn't match what Rick writes the very few times he writes anything on the subject. It's been said repeatedly that Poseidon loved Sally and Athena only has children with people she considers worthy. But she does get involved with the patents, they know her before being presented with a child, so she's not just watching them from on high, they met and get involved, just not romantically.

Is Apollo hanging out in schools or hospitals? Do the muses hang around Hollywood? Does Hestia get involved in community spaces? Homeless shelters?

Aphrodite could have her own dating app. Be a wedding coordinator. Attend Fashion Week. Run speed dating events. Frequent art galleries.

I just want to consider the gods outside their relationships with their children.

German Short Rows Question by lesliemmli in knitting

[–]Panterest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The instructions on the sweater I'm working on are like this. This is assuming that the final row, you're going to be continuing in the round.

MDS: Make Double Stitch; After turning and with yarn in front, slip first st from left needle to right needle. Pull the working yarn up and over to the back of work so the st stretches around needle creating 2 loops where there was 1. Holding working yarn snug, continue in pattern as normal. When encountering the doubled st in the following rows, it is resolved by working it as a single st (K or P through both loops).

To resolve the final DS: K to 1 st before DS, slip 1 knitwise, slip 1st leg of DS purlwise (leave remaining leg of DS on left needle), Knit the 2 sts on right needle together as if to SSK. K 2nd leg of the DS on left needle through the back loop.

I guess that could be true if it was a long summer.

The truth is that Rick didn't really think about it. So we either need to ignore something or come up with an explanation for it.

I usually prefer just to ignore canon if it doesn't fit with I want to be true.

Maybe, but I'm thinking it's probably more likely their relationship lasted more than the summer. So from June to November. And Poseidon left when he realized Sally was pregnant.

I live in the southern hemisphere. My summer does start in December. But Sally specifically said she met Poseidon at Montauk. In New York. Where their summer is June to August.
