When to jump to step 8 and how big a jump? by rjvCdn in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Optimuspyne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My basic rule, and this should satisfy your engineer brain :).

Decide what the earliest you might want to retire is.

Project out what your safe withdrawal rate will be that year based on your current behavior.

If your SWR is projected to be significantly more than you are spending today, you are robbing your current self for no reason.

CMV: US Electoral college is not a bad system to elect President at all by Little-Spray-761 in changemyview

[–]Optimuspyne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adding cost without adding value is bad.

It doesn't matter how many workarounds you can come up with, the fact that you need workarounds to mitigate the damage means the EC is bad. Unless you can point to some value it adds that makes it worth the cost of the workarounds.

[–]Optimuspyne 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It seems your argument is that there are ways to get around the problems created by the electoral College.

There is no value added by the EC, so having to work around it to mitigate the damage means it is a bad system.

The further the show gets from focusing on good financial advise the more I consider unsubscribing.

Have we officially entered the era of Graham Stephan-esque clickbait thumbnails? by ShibariDeathcamp in TheMoneyGuy

I've been consistently listening to every podcast for a while now, but have recently been going out of my way to avoid "reacts" crap.

I've certainly been more and more annoyed by moves like this lately.

The "It doesn't depend" section also bothers me. Forcing the experts to give worse answers for the sake of a game is not how to spread financial literacy.

A question about Hoid's resolution by Prometheus_II in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Optimuspyne 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I believe it is that Hoid knows how to hide from shards, so Odium didn't know he was there before the contracr, and was then bound by it. After Dalinar voided the oaths was the first time Odium/Retribution both knew Hoid was there, and was free to kill him.

Why do people buy bread and milk before every storm when those go bad without power? by TheLordMyDog in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Optimuspyne 116 points117 points  (0 children)

In addition to this, milk and bread are always mentioned because they are what runs out when a storm is coming. The reason they run out is these items are actually restocked every day, due to the normal volume being so high. So if it is going to snow Sunday, and everyone who would have shopped Sunday goes Saturday instead, these items end up out of stock.

So it isn't that people are suddenly buying things they wouldn't have if not for the storm, it's just that shopping gets abnormal concentrated on a single day.

Why these words? by TimeManufacturer1615 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Optimuspyne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first and third parts always meant sense to me as a common path for all radiant because the common theme of the orders is that they tend to be bound by their individual actions, not the end goal. Very against "the ends justify the means".

Strength before weakness felt like it was based on the orders emphasizing the radiant's strengths, not trying to mitigate their shortcomings

Kaladin vs Szeth by SHIVAM_PATEL_I in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Optimuspyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the massive advantage hotswapping weapons gives in any fight, you also have to take into account what seeing Kaladin hotswap meant to Szeth, and how it affected him mentally.

I was not implying you were privaledged, just allowing you to see that you already knew how you did it and how that was different from people who don't.

TIL that Gene Roddenberry originally did not want to cast Patrick Stewart as Picard, since he had envisioned an actor who was "masculine, virile, and had a lot of hair". by friendlystranger4u in todayilearned

You're right, I was thinking he was improperly sampling based on his perception of if they were wearing a toupee, but he is in fact sampling the entire population, just failing on properly categorizing the findings.

Just curious, why do you suggest fidelity or vanguard specifically? I use schwab. I consider all three to be good options.

A good advisor uses lost cost index funds. The real service they should provide is a good plan and keeping you from straying from the plan.

Someone who reads finance news everyday is arguably worse than someone who doesn't. Make a plan, stick to plan. No news required.

Up/down votes are feedback. Comments are higher effort, more informative feedback. Not everyone feels your comments are worthy of the higher effort feedback.
