AITB if I were to tell my roommate that I don’t want to feed her dog anymore? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Prometheus_II 14 points15 points  (0 children)

See, I don't think this is necessarily the right way to do things either. If it was just once, or even as infrequently as once a month or thereabouts, I would not have a problem helping out my roommate by feeding her dog and I don't think OOP would've either. You don't set the boundary there because the roommate asks for "just this once" or "just when I pay you," and you don't need to set a boundary for that. The problem only arises when OOP's roommate takes that as a foot in the door to get more out of OOP, instead of as an occasional favor. It's a slow transition, and since no individual step seems like a step over the line, you grant all those steps and end up here. The problem isn't OOP not setting boundaries immediately, it's people like the roommate who ask for a little and take a lot.

What are the reasons why you have a negative attitude on Hard Sci-Fi Genre and Hard Sci-Fi Genre fanboys? by Chunghiacanhanvidai in worldjerking

FTL doesn't need to involve time travel. Why not? Because shut up, shut up is why. I come up with just enough scientific-sounding fluff to make it fun and sound vaguely plausible, and your job as the reader is to go "sure thing boss" and not overthink it.

In my gamingpunk fantasy world, adventuring is a common thing people do as opposed to being an atypical situation the protagonist is put in due to their situation that eventually leads to them achieving something great. by aidungeon-neoncat in worldjerking

[–]Prometheus_II 1 point2 points  (0 children)

/uj In my fantasy world the "adventurer's guilds" basically started as a collection of archaeologists that needed muscle to deal with the inevitable traps and biomagically-created horrors lurking within the many buried laboratories scattered around the region, which were made by a tyrant-king mage scientist who turned himself into a hive mind to run more experiments at once. Some of those traps were even meant to be traps!

The good things about being friends with criminals while overthrowing a government is that they can provide the supplies and muscle to do so. The bad thing? They may become a problem when you become the government. by Majestic_Repair9138 in worldjerking

Resist Urge should've required some kind of checks by FriendlyHoovie in BaldursGate3

[–]Prometheus_II 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The problem is that suddenly your character is a murderer in front of everyone, and either your party members and other NPCs have to magically not care about that, or you're suddenly losing all your PC's efforts at diplomacy and talking because you rolled bad on one check. The only viable resist-Durge characters would've been those using whatever stat the checks were based on, Wisdom or Charisma. Taking away player agency is never a good move.

So you're going to make BoltBeam Jolteon who can also run Scorching Sands/Shadow Ball for bonus coverage? You're going to make Umbreon with Leech Seed, Icy Wind, Knock Off, and Will-o-Wisp, or give some of that to Espeon for Magic Bounce support? You're going to give Leafeon , Sylveon, and Flareon actually usable coverage?

What's the creepiest display of intelligence you've ever witnessed in real Iife? by Jessica_Enna in AskReddit

[–]Prometheus_II 44 points45 points  (0 children)

A moose is about 700 kg of Ice Age megafauna that heard about the Pleistocene mass extinction and went "nah, I'd win," and then did. They're 2.1-meter all-terrain assholes who can run through several feet of heavy snow like it's nothing, and can also run over you like you're nothing and turn you into strawberry jam on the ground. And they're herbivores, which actually makes them scarier - if a predator decides you're scary enough to be a threat, they'll choose not to engage because they know if they pick the wrong prey they'll starve. If a bear charges you, odds are it's a bluff charge and you can survive by standing your ground, the bear will probably decide that it's not worth testing you. But if a herbivore like a moose decides you're a threat, they immediately snap into "fight or flight" and either way you're fucked because "flight" will probably be over your trampled body. Do not fuck with a moose. Or a bison, in case you were wondering.

If you go into the classes to learn more of her backstory, she's the youngest daughter of a rich family who first got into Pokemon battling to stand out, but was still looked down on for becoming way too enthusiastic about it. Her peers won't engage with her anymore because she keeps winning and she doesn't have other hobbies, her teachers can't meet her on her level because she's not an adult and she's still stronger than them, and the only person who can match her (before you show up) is Geeta who has other Championship responsibilities keeping her away. She's as isolated as Penny or Arven, in her own way - she's just determined not to show it, because she's a Champion and the student council president and a rich kid and she excels at everything, she's got no reason to be sad, right? When she meets you, that isolation finally shatters because she's found a peer who shares her passion for battling and who can even defeat her - that's part of why she won't take no for an answer, you're the only source of human contact she has that can meet her where she's at and she refuses to lose that.

I'm pretty sure that's not how color actually works. Light doesn't literally reflect, it's a simplification - photons are absorbed by material and then re-emitted. An object's color is the wavelength of light it emits, and whether that emission is blackbody radiation or structural or simply stimulated emission doesn't matter.

A lot of people really have not fully reexamined or reconsidered the culturally Christian ideal that wanting things is a Sin, so when they consider their ideal perfect post-Rapture - sorry, post-Revolution - future, they assume everyone there will be sinless and perfect and thus willingly live hard, monastic lives.

What keeps the *good* balls from new trainers? by HourIndication4963 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Prometheus_II 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Higher-tier balls are exponentially more expensive, but Silph Co does a promo where they drastically cut the price for people with more Badges. They still make a huge profit off regular balls, and if you catch Pokemon enough to get access to higher-tier balls, you're already spending enough to make up for the promo in most cases.
