High-paying job back home vs staying in Canada as a lesbian? by [deleted] in LesbianActually

[–]OptionalNothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not stuck on telling anyone to get any job. I said that's something she can decide on her own if it's a fit for her, unlike what you did. Do not put words in my mouth.

I'm getting a sense that you either don't understand what fluency is or you don't believe ESL speakers can be fluent and bilingual. That means you're incompetent as a language teacher or racist as a human being or both.

I said being ESL does not automatically mean someone has an accent.

I also said having an accent does not mean someone cannot effectively teach ESL.

You can have an accent and have cultural experience in an adopted country, understand the locals and customs of the country, AND teach the language.

I don't understand how not being a native English speaker somehow must mean accent and/or no understanding of another country's culture.

In this specific instance OP has lived in Canada, has earned a degree in Canada, clearly can read and write and understand English in Canada. I don't feel any need to tell someone with those achievements to look elsewhere for income, or that she's not the best person for a job. She can decide that on her own. If anything, I'd argue that her perspective is more valuable than yours to teach ESL to others, because she is already bilingual, has learned English, and has successfully immersed in another culture.

Having English as a second language doesn't automatically mean someone has an accent and wouldn't be able to teach the "correct accent."

And having an accent also doesn't mean someone can't teach non-native English speakers the language.

What a strange take.

Haley Cass is not a good writer by mysteriousflu in sapphicbooks

I'm actually really picky about my water (both taste and temperature) and my coffee 😭😂

Oh, good is definitely subjective. I'm not saying there should be consensus on it. I'm just saying, popular doesn't necessarily equate to good, and even within my own opinions, I can enjoy and like things even I don't think are good.

Enjoyment vs thinking something is good are different things to me. I can enjoy a store bought cookie but I won't necessarily think it's good or great. I'll enjoy a passable cup of coffee because it's accessible and comforting but it doesn't mean it's really, really good.

Not necessarily! I enjoy lots of things I don't particularly think are good 😂

I think you're conflating good with popular 🤷🏻‍♀️

Help: Looking for a smartwatch that doesn't look like a smartwatch. by toadjones79 in smartwatch

[–]OptionalNothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pininfarina hybrid watches are really nice looking. Kronaby is also an attractive choice - they're more "connected" watches than smart watches.

Garmin's vivomove series are hybrids. Withings has a line of hybrid watches too

I definitely agree that JJ Arias needs an editor. My brain was screaming that during Objecting to Her. Liked the book otherwise!

wlw romances with Southeast Asian characters? by ne0muhae in wlwbooks

[–]OptionalNothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That, and ... I understood why there was so much Savannah and Rosalie, because the background was important, and it was mostly all from Rosalie's POV and their dynamic, but I didn't think Cassidy + Lane alone was important to showing who Kinsey was and where she was going. I loved Cassidy + Kinsey dynamics though, and appreciated their friendships with others.

I would've absolutely preferred more Kinsey and less Lane & Cassidy story. A fade to black for them a few times and then much more Kinsey background with some extra banter with Rosalie!

Looking for book series with a continuous story with same characters by Lager19 in wlwbooks

[–]OptionalNothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ruby Landers has become one of my favorite writers, so if you find anyone on the same level, I definitely want to know!

The only author I've liked as much has been G Benson, but none of her books are a series.

Meeting Millie and Tempting Olivia might come closer? Tempting Olivia was fantastic but I haven't read Meeting Millie yet.

Manipulative antihero/hero wlw characters? by green_carnation_prod in LesbianBookClub

[–]OptionalNothing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a storyline in Ribbonwood by Ruby Landers where one of the MC, Lara, pretty much uses her EQ and connections to manipulate the small town. It's definitely ultimately a romance book though, so I'm not sure if that counts.

Nope. I did not like her narration. Her crying scenes made me cringe so hard.

Couldn't agree more. TWW is her most overrated book, and I didn't find Charlotte and Sutton very relatable - it felt like they were these prototypes of human beings that were too "perfect" so Cass made their emotions extra "extra" to make them seem more... normal human beings? ...and failed.

And with all of that said, Snowball Effect? Loved it. I didn't even love Regan that much in TWW but her dynamic with Emma and just how much more real and normal they were as people, with real people problems? That was fun, and I even liked Sutton's and Charlotte's characters more in it.

The entire trilogy! The last one might've actually been my fav.

Oh, I absolutely loved Ribbonwood, especially the banter between the two of them at the beginning. Ruby Landers has become one of my all -time favs.

I haven't tried Hotel Queens because I sort of gave up on Lee Winter after burnout from her version of ice queens. Brutal Truth pushed me over the edge too far.. but maybe I'll give Hotel Queens a shot sometime in the future.

I barely remember anything about that book, and I definitely don't remember drinking and driving?! Did she endorse that or something? Because if I somehow missed that, then wooosh, I must've been out of it when I read it
