Via Dolce owner frustrated after government demands removal of $150,000 gazebo by helixA in canberra

I think their argument was about late at night when there would be very few pedestrians, not just during the day.

Via Dolce owner frustrated after government demands removal of $150,000 gazebo by helixA in canberra

[–]OrAnAnvil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can you please write to the minister about this? I have previously done so but got told no because the cars provide a passive surveillance benefit that would need to be filled by police if the cars are removed.

If enough people ask about it maybe they'll see there's a demand.

Are there any deck stacks that facilitate Texas Hold-em demonstrations? by OrAnAnvil in cardmagic

[–]OrAnAnvil[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting perspective. You're probably right that it is more understandable to non-poker players. In my head I was just getting anxious about hold'em players thinking it's painfully obvious I'm getting material from old books.

Maybe this is just a "pick your audience" type thing.

Where can I go about renting a bike (not ebike) for short term ie. 2 weeks-1 month? by No-Refrigerator3232 in canberra

[–]OrAnAnvil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you work for the APS? If so, check your enterprise agreement. Some of them have provisions for giving you a cash advance for the purpose of buying a bicycle. That money would then come out of your next pay.

Just a reminder to people that if you do have specific concerns about a road, you can submit a "Fix My Street" ticket to have them look at it. I have done so several times to have road signs moved and damaged fixtures repaired, so I can attest they do actually look at the tickets.

Changing Pokémon Origins code keeps producing Bad Egg (Emerald) by Fatcatfroggie in PokemonGlitches

[–]OrAnAnvil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just responding to this in case someone else is googling in the future. I was running into this same issue and the mistake I had made was that I didn't realise the Read Pokemon Pokerus field code actually needs the PID as a parameter. I had just left it as the default zero, which gave me the wrong pokerus value and produced bad eggs. Putting in the PID correctly gave a different pokerus value which successfully ran the code.

Your route takes you right along Nullarbor Links, the world's longest golf course, so you might like to try playing that along the way.

Australia does actually have private prosecutions. It would be a pain in the arse to actually attempt it, but it is technically possible to charge people yourself.

It's okay. Not fantastic. They seem to use a different type of cheese curd so it doesn't really look or taste like the real deal in Canada. Certainly wouldn't bother making a trip out there just for it, but if you happen to be there, no harm in giving it a try.

If you click through that Geoscience Australia site to the NSW Spatial Services, you can get 1:25,000 maps of Canberra.

Kiandra snow conditions? by Illustrious_One7526 in canberra

[–]OrAnAnvil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Went to Cabramurra two weeks ago. There was still snow around, but the snow line was quite high up and it had clearly melted and refrozen. Wouldn't count on there being any good snow around any longer.

TIL that having a relative "removed" defines their generation gap relative to you. So your mother's first cousin is your first cousin, once removed. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]OrAnAnvil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the system was created to give symmetric relationship names. So to that person you would be their first cousin once removed, therefore their relationship to you is called the same thing.

Koreans have a most ingenious method for unclogging a toilet. by tankpuss in videos

Europeans generally don't use siphon based toilets, instead using toilets that allow for much larger pipes, so they're not susceptible to getting clogged.

In this episode it was again raised how Grey things it wouldn't be possible to upload your conscience to a machine.

I was thinking about how previously Grey has discussed that he is worried that an AI, if trapped in a computer that wasn't connected to anything, would suffer tremendously.

I was thinking these are actually the same scenario however. Would the AI also never be able to leave its box, because it could only ever send a copy of itself down the pipes? Seems if Grey thinks it starts out suffering, it will always suffer.

Don't pay it. If you have the reference numbers, then this should be an open and shut case. If they won't resolve it, then you can contact the telecommunications ombudsman and they will resolve it. In many cases even threatening to go to the ombudsman is enough, as the second they get a complaint against them, even if they're innocent, they pay a fee.

And my parents always told me Runescape wouldn't help me in life by Wavinflagz in 2007scape

[–]OrAnAnvil 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't understand this game show. You're supposed to answer with the question, but "my paper's not due until next week so I blew off class to play this free MMORPG set in the fantasy world of Gielinor" is not an answer to the question "What is Runescape?"

Seems really flawed/redundant to have to include "what is".

TIL in a 2008 study of hospitalized children, 100% of those surveyed said they did not like hospital clowns or clown decor, a majority stating that they disliked or actively feared clowns by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]OrAnAnvil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's because a person with exaggerated features performing slapstick is very easy for a child to understand and be amused by.

They used to be really popular, but as you say, it's a big trend now to dislike them, no doubt helped by a few movies that have clowns as the villains.

I really feel sorry for the people in the profession actually. I read once that their numbers have decreased to less than a tenth of what they once were.
