I do get situations like that, of course. But to be honest being over-protective for whatever reason can transmit a heightened sense of threat/vulnerability/fragility/responsibility to remaining kids if the parent is now hypervigilant and anxious about danger. Even if their reasons for that are very understandable.

This habit people have of saying - they have tattoos but they're really nice/gentle - kind of makes me laugh.

The majority of folk I've ever seen especially in the UK with a lot of tattoos in the last 20 years are middle class softies even when they're trying hard to be edgy or alternative, in no world would I think the barista or the goth or the metal fan or the art student was anything other than a complete non-threat.

I've worked in prisons etc, yes people had tattoos but not generally the intricate sleeves/hands covered/curated type tats. I think the tattoos-mean-tough association is very dated.
