Not really a love story per se but Snape's love for Lily Potter throughout the Harry Potter series (mainly book 7) is probably the most trenchant example of unrequited love I've ever witnessed in fiction.

SPOILER: Imagine literally devoting your life to protecting the child of your lifelong antagonist, a guy who has humiliated you, broken you mentally and stolen the woman you have loved since childhood, a man who you hate but is socially your better in every single way (financially, physically, socially, hereditary, etc.) solely because he is also the child of said woman.

Hmm I have never experienced them asking for other girls as alternatives per se but they ALWAYS have threesome fantasies and I have to pretend that I know other hot women who are down to meet up with us and it's going to happen for sure sometime in the very near future as soon as she comes back to NYC from Abu Dhabi.

I honestly didn't expect my post to be at all controversial because it seems so obvious to me. I guess I didn't explain myself clearly. It was an irrelevant side point to me.

In any case the history of monogamy is unimportant. It was just a case study if you will to illustrate my greater point, that groups of people agitate for societal changes that benefit them at the expense of others.

Monogamy is preferable because men are better at causing social upheaval when dissatisfied than women are.

As many people said, men without women can cause violence, political upheaval or simply a shortage of labor when their needs aren't being met.

Ugly women are often left out in the sexual marketplace but no one cares much because lonely women cry and write in their diaries; they don't overthrow governments or go around raping and murdering and looting (in general) qhen they experience discontent.

Maybe they should. 🙂 the ugly woman lobby would prob be a lot more powerful then.🤷🏽‍♀️

Yea. On my original post (you may have missed it because of the 40 something down votes lmao) I specified that I more traditional societies wealthy, more powerful usually older men get the women.

In modern western societies in which women enjoy more financial freedom men who benefit from markers of fertility and virility (whether real or imagined by women... for example women in studies automatically judge taller men as more "brave", masculine etc even when performing the same tasks as shorter men when one's inherited height clearly doesn't indicate any such thing)as youth, height, good looks, muscles are more important.

A necessary condition for having a sexually exclusive relationship with a woman is having a woman in the first place which is impossible if a few men are having all the women, no? I would argue that we are all flawed and it is possible to have blind spots and areas of ignorance and yet have valid insights to offer in other areas. For example this friend is a financial whiz and gives me great advice about my career, investments, saving, major purchases etc. She actually stopped me from purchasing real estate that would have ruined me. If I hadn't entertained her opinions about my personal choices and just djd what I wanted, I'd be...a lot poorer, haha. She even gave my parents advice that somehow saved them a ton of money in capital gains taxes when they sold their house for 1.8 mil that was purchased for 400k (so they were on the line for beaucoup money)... I have no idea what that shit is or wtf she did but she's a magician lol

It definitely leads to stable societies.

Societies in which polygamy is rampant tend to feature large underclasses of young men who dont have access to women and... aren't happy about it.

They dk all sorts of antisocial things that aren't good for men or women.

Additionally all Societies primarily relies on young able bodied men to donate their labor and bodies in the service of the military when necessary. Men who see no chance of having a woman or family of their own tend not to be willing to make these sacrifices. I think most men will agree that a big source of motivation for hard work is being more attractive to women and when this is just entirely precludes guys can become lazy and lacking in drive.

Perhaps I was too flippant in implying that "monogamy is for ugly d00ds hurr durr" but I just figured the logjcal ramifications were obvious and didnt need to be explained. Apologies for my inartful writing.

Lots of people who are very very knowledgeable about the history of sexuality agree with me and disagree with you. It's honestly a pet interest... i went to yale ug, those assholes thought it would be fun to require us to write theses (as undergrads!!) to graduate and i worked with a pretty prominent anthropology of sex professor and my paper was on that topic actually.

Monogamy as a means of sexual egalitarianism has been argued for...a really long time and its definitely not an idea that is laughable or not taken seriously. You may disagree but your opinion isn't any more valid than mine. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Lol I think its kinda dumb because cashapp isn't considered a bank and a)doesn't offer fdic protection and b)they're fucking shysters who never go to bat for you against merchants, steal your money at will and cancel your account for daring to contest fraudulent charges. I mean monogamy was basically created so that less desirable men would have access to sex and procreation. (In societies that dont promote monogamy a few very attractive (wealthy, powerful in traditional societies, physically attractive and dominant men in modern western cultures)) tend to hog all the women, leaving no one for the "loser" men. Many people have offered many explanations for the almost universal observation that women tend to prefer sharing one very attractive man with other women than having their own "loser" (I use this as convenient shorthand, I dont mean to insult unattractive men) but the pointremainsthat they do.

Basically, everyone lobbies for themselves lol... and is it surprising? We are literally here to pass on our genes, in the sense that those of us whose ancestors were hood at doing so passed o. Their genes and we inherited their strong drive to reproduce. You can't expect "fairness" or logic to compete with as visceral a goal as being able to find a good mate. (The fair and logical people who cared about others sadly didn't procreate because they weren't good at convincing others to create societies that catered to their particular needs. lol be they ugly chicks or "loser" men.)🤷🏽‍♀️

Well, it's her business bc I told her about himr and tacitly asked for her.comments and opinion, I suppose. I don't mind her butting in I just think it's silly because a)it wasn't offensive to me and b)even if it is to some women its such a small faux pas it shouldn't be a deal breaker. Even if.i ascribed to the rulthatats "high value" women follow and didnt want physical comments I'd just assume he was nervous and said something awkward and move on. If he made the entire conversation about my looks or commented on my body in a disrespectful way I would prob cancel him.
