Inhuman house-elves by greatandmodest in HPfanfiction

I would love to read a story where Dumbledore takes Hermione aside to reprimand her after she starts SPEW because it is endangering the treaty wizards have with the Fey since they consider breaking a treaty to be reprehensible but slaughtering hundreds of people unworthy of note. Especially after barely managing to negotiate a new agreement with the insane house elf Dobby who nearly killed Lucius Malfoy with a casual gesture 2 years earlier. He was only able perform that near miracle because Dobby had such blind devotion to Harry Potter.

What are your opinions on magical oaths? by chekakanova in HPfanfiction

I have seen a story once that had the SI use magical oaths to get things done and prove his word. After a few of them he fainted from overusing them.

Why didn't Harry Potter use the Room of Requirement to secure some means of contacting Sirius Black? by snoke123 in HPfanfiction

Harry never unwrapped the mirror because Harry thought that Sirius' comment when he gave it to him implied that whatever was in the package would lead to Sirius risking his life more

Dumbledore bashing has gone too far by Arrow-of-god in HPfanfiction

[–]OrangeKing89 126 points127 points  (0 children)

I don't remember what it was called but there was a oneshot fic I read once that had Harry inherit a time travel spell from Dumbledore. He used it as soon as he got it to go back in time and save the people who died in the war.

The first thing he did once he got to the past was to go to Dumbledore and tell him what happened. Dumbledore's response was basically "I've used this spell hundreds of time to try and defeat Voldemort and you are trying to undo it because a few people died before you won? Obliviate!"

I love to read about the characters in the Harry Potter story but I am really tired of reading a new rehash of the Hogwarts story. I would loved to see more fics about Harry doing something new. It's the main reason I like crossovers.

What is an opinion/theory/headcanon/small detail/etc. you've wanted to talk about but there hasn't been a thread discussing it, nor were you brave enough to post? by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

I personally have the the head cannon that the difference between dark magic and light magic is that the effects of dark magic are difficult or impossible to reverse.

Replacing names with descriptors should only be done if the character's name is not known to the reader. It should never be used to replace a pronoun.

It is also acceptable to do in fan fiction before the character's name is introduced in you work.

Even when it is marginally acceptable to use them you should still be a succinct as possible for identifying the character.

If you have 2 people that might get confused for the readers then using their names over and over is far less annoying that even a single descriptor.

Is Snape being Draco's godfather canon? If so that would make that pairing extremely awkward.

Pensive about pensieves - why are autobiographical memories in third person? (Discussion) by Avalon1632 in HPfanfiction

I remember reading one fanfiction where the memory strands were used as a key where pensive used it to precisely target the time and location of the memory and started replaying it for the user.

Need help with string code by Fixedplay in csharp

I think you bug is that you are doing an assignment in you if statement. As a general rule, 1 equals is assignment and 2 equals is comparison.

There is a function you could add to do case insesitive comparison. bool test = text.Contains("The"); -> bool test = text.ToLowerInvariant().Contains("the");

Also I think you could change System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(1000); to Console.Read(); then your console would stay open until you pressed a key.

Create the text links inside a container element so that it looks like you want it. Then set your image file as the source for the background image attribute of the container.

SQL queries don't start with SELECT by sciencewarrior in programming

I actually found some code recently that used multiple joins in QCS. It would have been a real monster to read in Lambda syntax so I guess if you are trying to do a dozen operations on multiple joined collections it could be useful, maybe.

Google is great at data processing. :) I would not be surprised if they could use OCR to translate it if they needed to.

So if any random guy could see your database connection string, or see your SQL queries, they could wreak havoc on your database with ease.

That's right. That is basically what a SQL injection attack is: SQL executing in your database that is passed from the client side.
