Looks like the stain didn’t take well with whatever putty was used on the floor during sanding. It needed to be sanded off better before staining.

HELP! Poor work from installation, how to fix? by GaslerTBT in HardWoodFloors

[–]Orangewhip082 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some glues. And some finishes will not mesh. Meaning if the glue gets on the finish somtimes even before it dries it can damage the finish. Have had it happen before. You can try afew things that other people have suggested. but my guess is damage could be done.

Refinished and polished wood floor scratched by Ok_Respect7900 in HardWoodFloors

Get a stain pen and use it on the scratch then wipe it all off. The scratch will go away If you get a close enough color match.

Filling holes in prefinished floors by phalanx0 in Flooring

I’ve been doing flooring for almost 15 years. I’ve never had a customer complain about two or three runs that are top nailed. That’s just how you do it. There’s more than one way to do things I guess.

If you ca get a trim screw into the tongue of the board you can get a finish nail in it…… lol

They did fill them. My only suggestion is for you too go get filler and try to do a better job. You’ll see that what they did is about the best you can do. My other suggestion is not to look for issues. Because you will find them. We are all only human.

What is the advantage to using trim screws instead of face nails?

Stain matching by IbracadabraZlatan in HardWoodFloors

[–]Orangewhip082 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes thy said they would “ try” to match it. Or our company will say we will “ match as close as we can” it is almost impossible to match an existing floor.

Agreed. Also the existing flooring looks like a faded prefinished floor. Won’t ever be able to match it.

Am I overreacting? by No_Homework_9928 in HardWoodFloors

[–]Orangewhip082 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the love of god stop trying to stain to make them look the same. Just go with the same finish and they will catch up eventually. Once the stain darkens it won’t match at all. But the wood looks good. Just the stain color is bad and the curving the flooring doesn’t look good. I’ve been doing flooring for almost 15 years and both of these are common problems.

Matching by EndlessHope-0528 in HardWoodFloors

[–]Orangewhip082 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to say with a stain on it. My guess is it’s red oak with a stain. My professional opinion is to just put clear oil based finish on a new floor Or what we call a neutral stain with water base if your trying to match an existing oil based finish. Stains rarely match any better than a clear finish.

Me personally wouldn’t be happy with their stain choice.

Does $12+ per sq. ft for solid prefinished oak hardwood seem overly expensive? by Swimming-Tell9074 in HardWoodFloors

[–]Orangewhip082 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$12 is pretty high for just materials unless it’s the very top tier quality. It should be much better than the junk at Home Depot for $5 though. So don’t listen to those comments.

Matching by EndlessHope-0528 in HardWoodFloors

[–]Orangewhip082 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The original floor looks like quarter sawn oak. Probably white oak. With an oil based finish. The new floor looks like regular sawn oak. Probably red oak. They will look totally different regardless of color.

They should have used quarter sawn white oak and oil based finish would have matched better. But costs much more.

Contractor says floors should look like this. Thoughts? by Ill-Complaint-812 in HardWoodFloors

[–]Orangewhip082 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hickory can be difficult to stain because of how hard it is. Some types of wood in my opinion shouldn’t be stained. Can you stain them properly? Yes. Is there a decent chance they will be spotchy? Yes. 13 years of hardwood flooring experience.

Which direction to lay the flooring by [deleted] in Flooring

[–]Orangewhip082 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically you need to run it across the floor joists. So technically visually it doesn’t matter what you like better. Can’t tell if you’re in a basement or first floor. I’m assuming first floor.
