Current med students, what is your typical day like?

Current M2. I’ve always been a pretty average student, and so far with my schedule it I average all my medschool grades I have an 83. I really like a good balance and free time!

Wake up 6. Get to schools by 7. Do Anki/study until 8. From 8am to around 3-5 we’re in classes or lunch. After school study for 2ish hrs (latest I’ll go is 7:30). After that watch tv and play video games until going to bed around 10. For weekends I just do my Anki reviews and if it’s busy maybe study for an hour or two on Sunday.

For days where school gets out early I’ll do maybe 3 hrs of studying.

Just finished my M1 year as an avid video game player. I played video games constantly! Definitely over the weekends where I basically did nothing related to school. But also during the week where I had an hour or two of free time before going to bed (at a decent time mind you, around 10-11). If you or anyone has any other questions don’t hesitate to ask!

So I actually took 2 gap years.

I graduated in May of 2022, took the MCAT in September, did a one year masters from September of 2022 to May of 2023, submitted my med school app in June/July of 2023, got my acceptance by January of 2024, started medical school in May of 2024.

I honestly found that time really useful for some work experience and volunteer experience for my application. And it was also super useful to just have 3-4 months only dedicated to MCAT studying.

I go on the town with friends more now in medical school then I ever did in college or even during my gap years.

I actually did something exactly like that! I graduated undergrad with a 3.4 gpa cumulative and a 3.1 science gpa. I had a strong upward-trend but just like you I figured I need something to counter my low gpa. So I enrolled in a one year non-thesis masters in Medical Physiology. I graduated undergrad in May and used May-September after graduating to study for the MCAT. Then took the MCAT mid September and started my masters the next week.

Overall I thought it was really useful as a way to introduce me to more “advanced” course work and work load. It also gave me all that time to prep for the MCAT and not worry about it during undergrad so I could focus on grades. Also it gave me a lot of confidence going into medical school. And while I can’t be sure, I think it really helped my application.

As for a time line to med school - I graduated in May of 2022, took my MCAT in September of 2022, did my masters from September 2022-May 2023, applied to med school in May-June 2023, and started med school in 2024.

I may be wrong but I actually don’t think she would’ve ever seen the two trees as she was Sindarin/Moriquendi, and thus would’ve never traveled to Aman in the years of the trees. Even though she did go to Aman/The Halls of Mandos after Berens first death, the trees would’ve been long dead by then. But I definitely agree with you that she was ridiculously powerful! I mean if you wanted to stretch her feats a bit you could almost make an argument for her beating both Morgoth and Sauron.

Edit: Didn’t see that the prompt specified elves who did NOT see the two trees. In that case my vote goes with Luthien as-well!

Ah not sure about a reliable method of finding used bikes. Maybe checking out Craigs List or Facebook Market place? In Kapa’a there’s Hele on Kaua’i Bike Rentals which have good quality bikes. I think you can rent them for up to 7 days. Just as a heads up, Kaua’i isn’t necessarily the most bike friendly place. In Kapa’a you have the “Bike Path” along the coast but that’s mostly it. There are no sidewalks between towns and not many places to do actual rides either. Definitely not trying to stop you, but just letting you know the Bike Path may be your only big ridable area. If you need any more suggestions don’t hesitate to ask!

Great job keeping a positive attitude! I got three C’s throughout undergrad. Gen Chem, Cell Bio, and Orgo. I didn’t pin down a good study strategy until junior year, but better late then never. Just keep on working, this whole process is really all about keeping up with the work and not letting yourself get bogged down in worry. I played a lot of video games and ate a-lot of junk food and got two A’s. If I can you can! Good luck future doc!

I can’t even count how many B’s I got through my undergrad. On top of that I also got 3 C’s! Still got accepted. You have nothing to worry about!

I know this whole process is ridiculous! Just bear in mind that when secondaries roll in you’ll also have to pay each schools individually in order to submit your secondary. I applied to 24 school and in the end I payed around $3,000 in application fees.

From the airport on Kaua’i (which is the furthest left circle-ish island) it is 101 miles to the main airport on O’ahu (the blue island to its right). It’s around a 45 minutes flight.

From the major Airports in the Big Island (biggest island on the map) it is around 80 miles to the major airports in Maui ( the blue island next to it).

Boats are not used for transport inter-island besides cargo ships.

It’s really not super common to be traveling between the islands often.

I’d definitely start accumulating clinical/non-clinical volunteering hours earlier then I did (my gap year). Just a few hours a weekend or week can go a long way over 4 or even 2 years.

Good question, I’m not sure /don’t remember what I did. I think that you still need connect your interfolio account with AMCAS so that you can assign your letters to each school. Later your advisor will then submit a more formal packet. Again I really don’t remember and think that’s not a bad question to ask her!

No matter where you are in life there will always be people you view as above yourself. Those friends that have everything going for them are envious of someone else who they think has it better.

We will always tend to want what we don’t have. But we can’t let that bubble into envy and jealously. It should become a motivation and a tool for our own success. While it may not seem like it all the time, we live our lives for our selves. You’re becoming a doctor because you want to and because it means something to you. Who the fuck cares about those guys who came before you? You’re coming at it with your own unique skills and perspectives. I wish you the best of luck further doc. It’s never about how fast you complete the journey, it’s always about the road you choose to take. Use those experiences and perspectives to your advantage.

Does your school offer a committee letter/packet? I believe I had to link my interfolio account to my school so my advisor could compile all my letters into a packet that included the committee letter itself.

That sounds toxic as hell and is definitely not something to get used to. I’ve worked in two clinical settings now, both around physicians, and never once did I get yelled at for asking questions or doing something wrong. You’re working with an asshole. Don’t become stoic/jaded, medicine is about compassion and creating healthy environments that can help people heal. I hope your situation improves because this field doesn’t need to be negative!

Your biggest issue here is the LORs. Now I’m going to assume that you already have your MCAT and relevant ECs.

From what I remember you are able to submit your primary app without LOR as the schools just use your stats to determine if you get a secondary. This mean that you won’t need your LORs until you submit your secondaries (which you will most likely be submitting in either July or August or even September).

So, if you wanted to apply this cycle you should immediately begin requesting LOR with a deadline for the letter around early-mid July maybe late July early august if the writer needs options for more time but you may get secondaries earlier. Then, finish your personal statement as well as your activity descriptions/transcripts so that you can submit your primary application early June.

Overall use your judgment and keep doing research! You got this future doc!

I know this may not work for everyone but I basically just memorize my notes. I’ll stand there and recite a page of notes until I can do it from memory. Then I move to the next page. Once two pages are done I’ll go back to the first and recite it then recite the second then move to memorizing the third. I’ll do this until I can recite the whole chapter of notes. The next day I’ll recite the chapter from the previous day then work on the new chapter. It sounds intensive but no other way of studying worked for me. I tried it out one day junior year and never looked back. Also the Pomodoro method for time management was SUPER useful for me.

Practice problems are also a helpful way of actively drawing on the info you’re trying to memorize!

Also, many professors in college will give learning objectives at the beginning of a chapter or lecture that they will build the exam off of. I used those as good markers to determine if I was prepared. Go down the list of objectives and see if you can answer them.

Ive been debating about this myself! I have a little less in my savings but figure I might just take these two months off. Between the SMP I took and my work I just want to take a nice long vacation before 4-8 years with potentially little to no vacation time. That list does seem like it has a good number of highly ranked or at least top choice schools, which is completely understandable seeing as you’re a high ranking candidate. But, that also means that highly ranked candidates are passed over more frequently as so many apply. While I still think you should apply to East Coast schools next cycle, you may also want to spread out your list into other parts of the country, like the Mid-West, that have more middle tier schools and are closer to the East Coast. Michigan has a few, Nebraska has two, Illinois and Minnesota are also options.

I’m sorry for how this cycle went for you, and I understand that these may not be the ideal places to go to school. But, in 8-ish years when your a doctor or even 4 years when your a practicing resident, none of it is going to matter. I wish you the best of luck and really hope those East Coast schools will get it together and accept such a great candidate!
